    I'm going to paraphrase @Lorne_Kates:

It does get slightly better downthread..

  • But it gets to Linux anyways. (Post 15)

  • if it's windows only it could very well be because it's written in C# requiring **net framework** or DirectX which are both **windows exclusive**.

I was sorry to see this get corrected so quickly. Unchecked, great entertainment value usually follows such an assertion.

  • Even the most cursory glance at the game would have shown it was built in the Moai engine, which is primarily focused on Android games. (And the game's on Android and Ouya.)

So I guess this is one of those circumstances where Android does not count as Linux. Whereas if someone had complained Linux has low adoption, you'd shift into "Android counts as Linux" territory and tell them there are mega-billions of Linux computers out there. See, being a Linux fan is all about changing what Linux is based on the specific topic at-hand.

  • If you count Android as Linux for an argument about PC gaming, I guess we should also count XBox and Windows Server as Windows for the same argument.

  • I just get annoyed at the context-sensitive nature of the name "Linux".

  • I just get annoyed at the context-sensitive nature of the name "Windows".

  • BINNED

You mean like when the wife says 'open the windows' and then is pissed when I booted up the laptop?

  • Android is a Linux that ships with a bunch of GUI libraries and system libraries. Google is pretty bad at releasing them to the public. This party products that depends on those Google-only APIs are not cross platform.

So, the complaint is as silly as expecting that Windows 95 can run DirectX games. But it isn't out of the realm of possibility that somebody would be confused by how APIs work and which version of Windows supports which API. It also isn't "context-sensitive" to call them all Windows.

  • OP had a point of "if it runs on Mac, it runs on Linux" and that's pretty much true but the developers didn't see any value in the extra mile of spinning a Linux build and I'm not surprised. Only if Steam Machines really pick up it might get interesting and what are the odds of that?

Distribution fragmentation doesn't mean shit when you ship on Steam and Steam runtime. If something doesn't work on your special snowflake Gentoo build, tough, you probably caused it yourself. There are exceptions like Dead Island that just keeps black screening for a lot of people (including me) and no one can figure it out and I stopped caring.

I haven't had much problems with Valve titles on Linux after they got their shit together. They also did respond to a critical game breaking bug report in reasonable time (about a day). Apparently with infinite pool of money and some good developers you can make quality Linux ports.

  • @Captain said:

FYI, Win95 can run DirectX 3 games. 😛

  • Actually according to this you could install up to 8.0a on 95.

  • I'd be running Linux as my main OS if my games ran natively on it.

  • I guess you're not into million different first person shooters that don't really bring anything new to the table?

  • I'm into Guild Wars 2 mostly. Pretty much everything else I do is either cross-platform or done over SSH.

And no, ArenaNet, packaging an old, modified version of Wine with your Windows installer does not count as a Mac port. Or a Linux port should they ever start calling it that.

  • To give credit where credit is due, the very next post:

I was confusing it with the Visual C# implementation. I didn't know it was available without .NET. My info was just outdated, that's what they taught me at school, sorry. Thanks for informing me.

So ignorant, but not a jerk.

Also, the idea that linux gamers are a dead weight that would just create problems seems overblown. Go to humblebundle.com and see the stats for how much extra is paid by Linux vs Mac vs Windows customers. Linux is consistently at the top.

  • Diablo 3 ran very well on Wine last time I played it and I didn't really notice/care I wasn't playing on Windows. I don't mind if initial setup takes me a few minutes longer with Wine if it keeps working well after that and I can avoid the hassle of having Windows around. World of Tanks also works fine after initial Wine setup even though has a slightly lower fps.

Maybe I'm just stupid, but I don't understand what this means or is referring to at all. What is ahead of Windows, and by what metric?

  • @cartman82 said:

    From the table:

    • Average Windows: $5.54
    • Average Mac: $6.26
    • Average Linux: $5.67

As we see, avg. payment is actually higher on Mac than on Linux (which is in turns higher than on Windows).

(Sorry for the misreply, this was meant to address @LB_)

  • In all my bundles, it's more like this:

  • And if you notice comment 15, you'll see the devs pitch in and say that yes, they do intend to support Linux, just not straight out of the gate. They make the very good point that developing a game for Steam that cannot run on Steambox is a bit self-defeating.

  • @gordonjcp said:

Whoa, you believe that Steamboxes will ever be successful?

  • BINNED

Personally, I'm hoping they will gain enough steam to make more devs make multiplatform games because they want to tap that market.

Practically... it could work but the machines I saw (which was a while ago, admittedly) didn't look too impressive on the "bang for buck" front, which is a shame.

  • It would be a win-win situation for current Linux users. Maybe there would be enough interested developers to create a desktop that's beautiful and doesn't suck for one.

  • What's everyone's objection to KDE again?

That's a fantastic cluster fuck waiting to happen. They're trying to be apple but without forcing their will on the hardware stack which is one of the corner stones of the iphone/ipad/ioverpricedcatflap.

I do find the idea of a striped down gaming OS quite nice though.

I could barely figure out what you were referring to. The giant red pie chart showing how much of the total was spent by Windows users drowned out the average numbers.

Then install MATE, which is the currently maintained fork of GNOME 2.
Or Cinnamon, I also liked GNOME 2 and I am now very statisfied with Cinnamon.

    Yes, I use Cinnamon.

  • @hifi said:

    No it's not.

It potentially could be if the game is written only using OpenGL as the graphics API. If it draws even a single native widget, there's zero overlap between OS X and any Linux out there. (Unless you run OS X in X11 compatibility whatever mode, but then your application looks like shit so why would you do that?)

    @hifi said:

One guy in that thread seems to think:

    1. It's dead-certain, and
    2. 14 different companies producing Steam Machines is a good idea and not a fucking awful idea. (It worked out so well for the CD-i, guyz!)

That's actually good, it's saving you from playing a super-boring game.

Too bad they can't make a quality Windows desktop application to save their lives. Or reliable servers. Or pricing policies that make sense, or any sort of library browsing/search system, or a stable API anybody else can use to make any of those things, or...

That is SUCH a flawed statistic, I don't even know where to start.

    @hifi said:

I'm sure Diablo III is equally disappointing on all platforms.

    Well it's a trade-off.

Steam Machines will probably never been even a third as successful as, say, Xbox One. But it porting your game to the platform only takes 20 hours, it's probably still worth doing.

If this game hadn't been built on an Android-targeting engine and they had to start from scratch on the port (say, it takes 100 hours), and it's a $10 game... well, the numbers might not line-up as well there.

I don't think anybody except really naive 13-year-olds thinks Steam Machines is going to be successful. Valve's made WAY too many missteps, and the product's WAY too little too late for that. Hell, the controller alone was, what, 2 full years late? And when Valve fails to sell any, they can't even low-ball the hardware costs (and make it up on game sales), because all of those 14 hardware builders need to get their dosh out of the deal, too.

The best I can say for it is it'll probably do better than Ouya.

QFT. I might buy that controller, though, since my Computer is already next to my TV.

I always thought that had some potential but it was marketed badly. I think choosing a sane way to get netflix/kodi on your tv market at 60% of the price would of been better. I'm still looking for something easier than my old laptop/a hdmi lead and a wireless mouse and keyboard for all my subscriptions in one place.

You mean like Roku, which existed before the Kickstarter for Ouya even started? Something like that?

The Ouya Kickstarter hype is probably why my Roku 3 has the pointless ability to play Angry Birds. Which I've done exactly once. For like 4 minutes.

Speaking of which, has Humble ever said what they do with statistical outliers? Because outliers have a greater effect in a smaller data set.

    ##Overly exaggerated example

Suppose that there are 100 people who chose Linux and 10000 who chose Windows.

Now, suppose just one person in each group pays $5000 and the rest pay $5.

For Linux (100 people), the average with the outlier is $54.95.

For Windows (10000 people), the average with the outlier is $5.50.

For both, the average with the outlier removed is just $5.

  • Well the screen says "average" which (in the US at least) generally means it's the mean. Because our education system sucks ass and doesn't teach the difference between the word "average" and the word "mean" until long after most students have stopped inputting new information into their brains.

EDIT: also Humble has a vested interest in inflating the number, as it leads directly to more revenue to them, and the bottom number is capped at 0.01, so they're unlikely to chop off outliers.

You might have noticed that Steam itself no longer has listings for Linux. Instead, it has listings for SteamOS (or whatever they're calling it now).

Also, a number of games that didn't run on SteamOS have had their Linux versions removed.

So yeah... Valve is forcing the issue.

Yeah ideally. Less shit and more apps though. That may have just been the European version though. We tend to get the shit version.

  • Hence you should use the median for stuff like this.

  • It's shit because you need to use the CLI to change the login background color and to change the background image you need to hack a binary file and replace the image inside it.

    Oh wait.... that's Windows 10.

KDE has a GUI for all this.
