Poll: Which smartphone OS do you use?

  • I swear there is a surprisingly large contingent of WP users on TDWTF...

    [poll name="SmartphonePoll"]

    • Android
    • iOS
    • Windows Phone
    • Blackberry
    • Symbian
    • Firefox OS
    • Other (:wtf:)
      [/poll]

  • HEY, Y U NO DO MULTIPLE CHOICE?

    Your poll is broken!

  • I thought about it but I figured that few people have more than one main smartphone OS.

  • Windows Phone is dead. Even diehards are leaving now.

    😦

that really is a shame.... because the platform itself is compelling...

too bad it suffered the same issue that blackberry did (there are no* apps for it, so there are no* consumers that want it, and because no* consumers want it no one* wants to develop apps for it)

*to within a first order approximation at least.

  • Okay, who voted "Other". Fess up! What the hell other OS do you use?!

Ubuntu Phone? Sailfish? You do know there's like 17 of them currently?

  • SailfishOS, shame on you not having that on the list.

I think it is one of the few half-way sane "other" OS.
Based on Linux, prefer open solutions from upstream Mer project instead of going their own way and actually have 2 products on the market.

  • Windows Phone is like the guy that comes just before the end of the party, and he didn't bring any beer

  • Agreed!

  • BINNED

LiquidSmooth but Android is as good an answer

It's rather: He brings a metric ton of good stuff - but the party was two weeks ago.

  • Two weeks ago ?

When WinPhone 7 came out, you couldn't even transfer file with bluetooth (which every phone with bluetooth could do about 10 years before that) : http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mobiledevices/forum/mdlumia-mdcamera/can-i-send-or-receive-files-through-bluetooth-on/aa9a37b4-d075-44a2-8f21-e5758d839e97

Now, if you're talking about Windows 10 for phone, it is probably good.
But everybody that was at that party is now in a retirement home. That's how late they are.

  • Be honest: How often did you actually need to transfer a file through bluetooth?

I mean, even if it did work: "Okay, now put your phone in discoverable mode, so we can pair. Give me the code...nope, didn't work. Okay, let's try again. Fine, it's paired. Now sending the file. What do you mean, you don't see it? Agh, fuck it,I'll send it through email."

  • According to what I can find the OS is officially Other/Proprietary.

  • @Rhywden said:

Multiple times. And it always work. I even do that with my Laptop, no need to look for a cable.

I guess that's what you do when your phone can't do what other phones did 10 years ago. Or when you're stuck with an iPhone.

Just so you know, now you can transfer files with NFC easily. At least on Android

  • I was buying a new phone yesterday in a store (mic was broken in the old one after screen replacement)
The 640 xl was by far the best hardware for the money, but I got burned by the lack of upgrades on the 710 (and general lack of apps). They did the something later on as I recalled...
I ended up with the Sony M4 aqua, which is kinda meh..
Point was, the only ones who screwed ms were themselves.

  • Yeah, "easy". If you have the same brand and model, maybe. The times I've tried it... well, we usually agreed to try it in a more reliable way.

See, this "lack of apps" thing I can't really agree on. How many fart apps do you actually need?

  • Currently Android, but I want to try other Linux-based OSs when I get the time.

Filed under: Hold on, it's not connecting, let me run ifconfig again

  • Windows Phone 8 user checking in. Yes, 8. Not 8.1, and not 10, because my carrier is lazy and so am I.

  • @Rhywden said:

I need a good app of each kind.
    One e reader,calculator, calendar etc.
And the wp apps are kinda shitty...

  • @Rhywden said:

Never even occurred to me. Usually just go out on Windows network / samba, or use google drive.

Everybody who's actually tried Windows Phone 8+ for more than a few seconds likes it.

The people ragging on it are invariably people who either:

    1. Have never tried it, or
    2. Have, but can't buy one due to some lazy app developer not porting to it.

    You crazy bro.

They FINALLY released new high-end phones. If anything, it's picked up in the last few months-- although given the year before the recent announcements were pretty dire.

(The 1020 and 1520 have been the only high-end Windows Phones for like... literally 2 solid years. If you liked your 1020 and want to upgrade, what do you upgrade to? Jack-shit, is the answer, there ain't none.)

Anyway things are looking up now.

  • I think it's nice FWIW. I was waiting for you to come in here and start defending it more adamantly when I created the topic. 😛

That doesn't make sense on like 5 different levels.

Windows Phone doesn't even have a filesystem. Where would the files go? Why would you expect to be able to transfer files to a device without a filesystem?

It doesn't? So it's like an iPhone?

Good to know, another strike against it.

  • When I had an Android 2.something phone, it didn't have one either. That's normal for smartphones.

  • @blakeyrat said:

Windows Phone worldwide market share : 2.6%
Linux Desktop market share : 5.6%

Oh yeah, things are looking great 😄

Then you have not looked very hard. The included ones work just fine and I just did an exemplary search for alternative calculators - there are several TI-whatever lookalikes and similar.

    So you can't have pictures / songs /etc ?

Just because you can't see the filesystem doesn't mean there is none.

So because Android 2 sucked, it's ok for WinPhone and iPhone to suck too?

it took until 2008 for windows 98 to drop below 1% (not counting 2007 where it made it as low as 0.9% and then jumped back up to 1.05 at EOY) market share?

    WTF?!

But, but, but ... @blakeyrat said you can't expect to be able to transfer files without a filesystem !

If there is no filesystem, you can't have files.

WinPhone must store files in Magical Unicorn Land

  • Ramdisk 😛

  • Maybe WinPhone finally implemented WinFS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinFS
It was supposed to be part of Win95 WinXP Vista but then they said fuck that shit stopped talking about it .

  • I'm starting to think WinFS is just one of those things Microsoft announces purely to keep their competitors on their toes.

*to within a first order approximation at least.

That was always the part of the equation I never understood. When Microsoft wanted to get into the games market with XBOX, they went all-in, and threw cash at it. It didn't matter to them if the first XBOX made money, the only goal was to get it into the hands of customers, and to get some killer games on it. Hence their deal with Bioware for KOTOR, and buying Rare, and of course, Bungie being paid to drop PC/Mac gaming and to pivot the upcoming Halo into a FPS game for the XBOX. The rest is history. Yes, they lost money on the original XBOX, but they achieved their goal! They were able to win mindshare with their target customers, and push into the market, helping to displace Nintendo in the process.

Fast forward to their tepid attempts to enter the phone market, and you wonder if it is the same company being discussed. None, literally none of the strategies that were proven to work when entering the games market were used. They didn't secure the killer apps for it, they tried to make a profit as soon as possible, and they didn't seem to care that they weren't presenting a compelling case to use their brand. All they had to do to make it work, is exactly what they did to make the XBOX work: buy a couple of good development houses, hire some experts and craft their own killer app, and throw money at that tactic until it paid off.

Instead, when I looked at their apps back when I was considering a Windows phone when it launched, they were missing CRITICAL apps such as from major banks. When I looked back then, only ONE of the big four banks had an app ready to go for the Windows Phone. Let alone regional banks or credit unions. I mean, listen, if I can't get my day to day business done on your device without visiting the company's shitty "mobile" websites, then we have a deal breaker right out of the gate -- I won't even be compelled to look at your time wasting offerings if you haven't managed to get the productivity stuff done.

If Wells Fargo, BofA, etc. weren't wanting to invest in making the apps, then you offer to pay them to make it, or offer to make it for them for free! Yes, you lose money by doing that, but that was what you had to do to get XBOX off the ground as well. You can't just sit back and say, "well, we have Office available for the phones, so we should be set." I can count on zero hands the number of times I have ever wanted to sit back with my PHONE and do real work editing documents in Office, on my PHONE. What world do these people live in?

Granted, a lot of the stupidity of what they did with the phone happened under Balmer's idiotic "leadership" and Nadella is kinda/sorta turning their battleship around and into the kinda/sorta right direction. But certainly not fast enough for the phone. Unless they go all-in with the phone like they did with XBOX and get ALL of the top 100 apps available on Android/IOS out for the Windows Phone PLUS some killer apps (not Office) available that are ONLY available for the Windows Phone, they aren't going to get any traction. I mean, honestly why would anyone choose the Windows Phone at this point if they want to use their phone for both productivity and play? The software just isn't there to justify the purchase. And I am saying this as a full time .NET developer. They need to get their shit together on the phone, or dump it and get back to their core business. It is an embarrassment as it is right now.
