Random pictures WTF

  • I'll start this thread off with something that's not a picture.  It's an install log.  Here's the log, in its entirety

    Nothing was installed.

Created with Zero G's InstallAnywhere 7.1 Enterprise Build 2763

INSTALLATION WAS CANCELLED BY USER DURING PRE-INSTALLATION

    Summary
    -------

    Installation: Successful

I can't think of a good reason that one would need this capability:  Log On or Log Off?  Am I in some sort of limbo right now?

    Cognos Log On Log Off

Here, you can see the well composed readme file that came with the latest version of my IDE.  You can see a bit of my wallpaper. in the background

    a readme file

And here you can see an error from a program that's not even running.

    powerpoint has found an error

There are more to come, but I'll have to post them when I get to the computers on which they reside.

It's that desktop wallpaper that someone made over in the SS thread ... I think elgate made it.

  • At least the installation was successful after a user abort during a pre-install error eh?

  • Actually the install log makes perfect sense. The user cancelled the install indicating their desire to install nothing. Nothing was indeed installed.

Nothing was desired, nothing happened, expectations were met. Hence, success.

  • Extremely likely that another Office application loaded some part of Powerpoint.

  • Great idea.  Here are a few I've been collecting at imageshack...  some of them from this site.  :)

This one is from TDWTF, one of the banner ads that showed up for a while...  I mean, she's not bad, but "cute"?  I don't think so...

Spotted this on my way home from work one afternoon.  I've seen these busses before, but finally had a chance to grab my cell phone (camera) and snap one - which is also why the quality is so bad...  Really, if you had an unfortunate last name like this, would you want to slap it all over your business?

This was a side ad at MSN.  I expected someone who looked more like Dog...

That's my best guess as to what happened, because I had had a ppt opened in IE earlier.  I had closed down that ppt but not the entire instance of IE, so Powerpoint was probably still open somewhere.  It's a WTF that I have to close out of IE entirely to avoid error messages like this.  There was no ppt in anything I had ACTIVE at the time.

  • I found this off-by-one error a while ago but just uploaded it today for this thread. It was Feb 1 at around 11:00 am when I saw it. I used the "next 12 hours" functionality to see how cold it would be overnight (as in from midnight Feb 2 to noon Feb 2). Obviously the script that generates this page increments the day upon encountering midnight.

As far as I know this bug is live and can be viewed at http://www.theweathernetwork.com/hourlyfx/canb0037/hourlytable/1 provided that you're viewing at the right time of day.

Also, 'sup ender? You want IN? 'Cause I have it.

I had to re-boot my very unresponsive KDE server because of that. Either stop posting images from that server or fix the broken hot-link prevention.

(Yes - that is a Windows screendump - at least Windows didn't barf on it.)

  • If "bad for your health" means "you'll get eye cancer", then they are probably right..

  • Oops, sorry about that - that hotlink image was created for certain special sites, and I apparently managed to overwrite my usual hotlink graphic with it.

I guess the real WTF is that a mere 33KB .PNG can nuke KDE.

The secondary WTF is (a) not using blacklist-based hot-link prevention for images that will end up in an RSS feed, and (b) not basing the image on tubgirl. I always found that to be extremely effective.

  • @RayS said:

Actually, that size is a WTF - 33kB is the image that was supposed to be displayed, not the hotlink image (which is 88kB). As for nuking KDE, it probably just caused excessive swapping because the browser tried to keep it decompressed in memory, which can make the system extremely unresponsive.

Anyway, speaking of images, here's a reason to not mix hardcoded and system colors:
    What am I agreeing to?

I am thinking it's the dimensions that contributed to it also. Windows 98 was bad about having that large of a file open, even if it was off the screen.

The one thing that will make Opera beg for mercy: Over a hundred images on a page that has opacity set to anything other than 100%. Damn those MySpacers and their f'ed up layouts!

33K/88K - is the difference really anything other than trivial? It's a very compressable image, so both are plausible.

Either way, assuming 24bit colour depth, that would put the decompressed image at ~400MB. Depending on if something lame like caching it multiple times happens or if PJH has a low-RAM (say 512MB or less) PC, that could lead to badness. It's still a WTF though. If my human brain and calc.exe can figure out that trying to cache the full uncompressed image would screw you over, I'm sure the browser/OS in question could make the sensible decision to perhaps only load the visible part, ir throw up a "opening this image will fark your computer - allow or deny?" message.

Like viewing a large (and not especially large by modern digital camera standards) image in a browser is hardly what I'd consider a completely unthinkable scenario that you could get by not testing. Blindly trying to stuff something into a container smaller than the item and then falling over dead when it won't work is not really acceptable.

You surpass the Pink Girl I knew in class, who wore pink clothes, had pink accessories and did up her windows in pink.

I use a powerful pink (in the area of #e2097e) as the background of our dev server when I RDP to it. That is handy. But not something I want to look at constantly. (our staging server is in brown tints, because it's a really shitty machine)

I'm assuming you do this for the same reason that I do with putty, to quickly tell which server you're logged into?

  • I used some crazy colour schemes in the past, but I settled with this one a few years ago, and I've been using it since.

And since I use several servers through RDP, and I ssh into various machines, I colour coded them all, so that I immediately know which mahine I'm working on.

That's exactly why I'm using this theme - I find it much easier on my eyes than the usual black-on-white (but your is one of the usual reactions I get - the other one is "Can I try this, too?").

  • @ender said:

(but your is one of the usual reactions I get - the other one is "Can I try this, too?")
Funny you should mention that: may I have the ini for that (or whatever windows uses now)?

  • @ender said:

I have found white to be entirely the wrong colour to be involved in text display, in my many colour scheme experiments. You don't want white-on- and you don't want -on-white, because the 'white' of displays is just too damn bright.

I have long since settled on a mixture of black-on-grey (things like editors) and grey-on-black (things like terminals).

I just wish it was possible to do this to a web browser without buggering up stylesheets on half the sites.

Sure (I removed the non-essential entries from the file, hopefully it'll still work).@asuffield said:

I've got a custom stylesheet set up in Opera for this. Pretty much just sets color and background attributes on everything with !important.

I find too many sites rely on their background colours too much. What I want to do is say "whenever you are rendering black text on white background, then apply this instead...", but there's no way to do that.

  • @ender said:

That actually looks sane. At least it's a scheme.

Personally, I've settled on a light grey for windows, an colour-on-white for text.

But I think I'll experiment with some dark/inverted schemes for code. Note how my playlist is dark -- I can't stand a bright playlist for something as mind-nightly as music (also have slight trouble with Foobar's Windowness).

Dang, I'll have to upgrade my RAM again.

Strangely, there was no estimated time left. Damn 2GB file size limit.

Weird, I thought that 4.1x wouldn't let you start after the 30-day trial period (I remember reverting back to PSP 4.0 because of that).

4.12 was the last to let you go past the 30 days.  But I seem to recall that even PSP 5 just had a date stored in the registry, which was easily changed.

Nah, ET is Earth Time.  They don't want you using days on Mercury or something.  For example 1 day MT = approx. 58 days ET.

    2. My usage of the img-Tag's "width" attribute
    3. The gigantic Desktop icons
    4. The wallpaper
    5. The 4 running dekstop widgets
    6. The non-responsive outlook
    7. The >6 icons in quick start bar, one of which seems to be a Visual Basic (5? 6?) App with default icon
    8. The choice of software used (Vista, Outlook, Internet Explorer)
    9. The 15+ Systray icons
    10. The memory and CPU usage or
    11. The most obvious thing, that huge repitition of the Outlook title bar inside its own Window.
