Why is Everybody so clueless on the importance of Desktop Search to the Masses?

  • @belgariontheking said:

How do you make, say, an HTTP request using satellite internet without having a transmitter?  I know they do it, I just don't understand how given what you've said.

You install some software from the satellite ISP and it splits your connection. All outgoing packets will be sent through the dialup line. I'm not sure of the exact details, but depending on your ISP, they might allow outgoing packets with the sat ISP's IP address as source (if not, they can be tunneled). That way the site's responses will go back to the sat ISP's gateway, and it'll do the magic involved in bouncing the packets off the satellite and down to your PC again.

You can do similar things if you're at a multi-homed site. Say you got an incredible deal with ISP #1 for downloads, but they charge arms/legs for outgoing, and an opposite deal with ISP #2. Great outgoing, pricey incoming. You can split things so the packets go/come via the "cheapest" interface and save yourself a few bucks.

    @belgariontheking said:

I know I've played MMOs with people in iraq who are using satellite internet

Depends on the sat ISP. Given they're in Iraq, they could be using a military satcom network. Those are done via low-earth orbit satellites (a few hundred miles altitude at most). Commercial sat ISPs will have their own, or are leasing transponder time on, satellites out in geo-sync orbit (roughly 23,000 miles).  So a packet has a absolute minimum round-trip of 46,000 miles, and always more since the tx/rx pairs won't be directly underneath the satellite.

Broadband wireless isps are going to be using microwaves, or wimax, or even wifi with directional antennas. Distances generaly won't be higher than a few miles, as they're line-of-sight operations.

Latencies will be high because the packets are going: you->dialup->satisp->site being hit -> satisp->uplink->downlink->you. Dialup's laggy enough as is (been a LONG time since I used an actual modem. What's a fair latency for you->isp->back again rountrip? 100ms?). On top of that, unless you're incredibly rich, your packets will be fighting for transponder time on the satellite with everyone else (fellow isp users and who knows what else that's renting time), so as traffic goes up, so does queieng time. Figure around 140ms for a *perfect* satellite bounce (just travel time, mind you). Few hundred ms for standard internet delay and whatnot, and you're up to 500ms already on an ideal link. Factor in transponder delays and all the other things that might happen, and you're easily pushing 750ms minimum.

If you're lucky enough to have a bi-directional satellite link, you're looking at around 500ms absolute minimum for a perfect bounce (you->sat->isp->sat->you) off a geosync satellite. Worse minimum latency, but things might be a bit speedier as you can eliminate the dialup ISP from the mix. And if the sat ISP does some decent cacheing, it can eliminate dirt-side delays for some content.

Either way, satellite's a crappy choice if you've got other options. But if you're out in the middle of nowhere with only dialup, satellite's definitely a contender.

And hey, I'm bored tonight, so here's a wonderful picture to explain it all. Not bored enough to draw in the wooden table and/or Swampify it with video, but at least it's somewhat clear:

Hop #1 will of course pass through your dialup ISP, so count that as two hops, really.

...or ISDN, or another link. Most of the satellite connections I've researched tunnel the outgoing packets.

Correct, but I've used a (permanently installed, directional) wimax link over about 40 kilometers.

There is also another type of Wireless ISP in Australia which uses the cellphone network for data.

Just contributing to the conversation :)

I don't think that you're in a position to demand proof for anything. You failed to prove your program works as advertised, you failed to recognize any proof we've provided that it doesn't work better than anything else, you refused to take part in a showdown (which you demanded, by the way) to prove that your program is better than anything else.

We don't need to prove anything.

No, obviously you are not the only one. Some people here did post videos of your "tool" failing miserably and GDS being better than your tool. These were properly made and really easy to understand. From what I've seen (and I didn't dare turn up the speakers) I can say that obviously you're the only one that CAN'T do video.

    514M /home/ch0/Mail
    16G /home/ch0

    That is all.

EDIT: Oh, and this is after a filesystem crash lost about 1/3 of my ~/src - oh boy that hurt. Yes, yes, I know. I should have had it all in one large text file, that would have made it a lot easier to lose everything in one go.

No, you're the only one who uses a camcorder to record yourself playing a video on your computer. Why don't you go for broke and record yourself playing a video you recorded of you playing a video on the computer? Every time you re-video one of your videos, you destroy more and more of the video content. Do it enough times and you end up with pure static for a picture, and your useless muttering in the background.

Why did I not have that idea myself?

*WHY* do you persist in uploading videos like this? Your previous series of 60 videos has essentially *ZERO* viewers. I think there's less than 10 parts that have been viewed even ONCE.

Why do you think anyone else in the world cares what a middle-of-nowhere town in Alberta is doing about homeless shelters, or nuclear weapons?

At most, people might want to READ a transcript of the discussion. They're never going to sit at a computer and watch 41 x 10 minutes worth of bad video. Why don't you do something constructive and type up a transcript in SSDS and upload the .txt file somewhere?

Personally, I'd be interested in searching for the bits where people comment/question your presence, but I'm not gonna sift through 41 videos to find it.

    b) NO ONE wants to watch 41 2 minute clips about a random town in the middle of Canada. No one. Period. Would *you* even be willing to watch the whole thing (not using random) again?

    c) To answer your question, it took Google Video about 30 seconds to load the whole file.

  • Fantastic

Hi guys! Im a regular reader but first time poster.. this thread is made of the stuff of legend therefore I felt compelled to say hi and congratulate you all. I have literally had tears in my eyes when reading some of this Swamp shit.. simply phenomenal. Every day I expect him to come clean and admit hes been winding everyone up.. but the reality of the situation is beginning to set in.... he is real.

    Some of my observations;

    • At a glance SS seems like a regular troll.. I thought he was just extremely good at winding you all up but the more you sort of look into this the more apparent it is how serious he is about what he's peddling. This aided in enhancing the amusement for me and added a "reality TV" feel to the whole thing.
    • SS clearly has a psychological condition.. yet is coherent enough to clag that amount of spaghetti code together.. I'm an experienced developer of 10+ years and would struggle to comprehend what is going on in that mess, and I'd be willing to bet you all would be the same.. maybe SS is one of those idiot genius types (like those that do math really well).. perhaps he is the ultimate coder but has picked up every bad habit through a poor self learning process.
    • I belive SS is 30% troll, 60% serious and 10.52% magic.. for someone who I don't think has actually constructed a single proper sentence in anything I've read of his he has the most amazing ability to draw people in with the sheer entertainment value of the crap he provides BUT unlike many of the lesser trolls he manages to keep it going perpetually. His high seriousness factor and magic make him a clear league above the rest.
    • He is quickly becoming one of those 10 minute internet icons (alongside "all your base", those exhaust whistles etc.) which I believe should give hope to all of the mentally ill out there.
    • SS has the most uncanny ability to ignore and wash away the taunts and questions (think the great Desktop Search Showdown of 2008 which he bailed on) of everyone he meets.. it is not clear to me if he is purpoefully ignorant, unable to follow what people are telling him, or so far gone that his perception has been gradually warped to the point where he reads the most abusive reply as a positive, friendly review for his search... erm..  software?

    Some of my questions;

    • Where did SS's PC come from? How did he get into this stuff? I feel his talk of VAX/Mainframe is mainly BS.. I'm not sure if he just found an old PC in a dumpster or actually murdered someone who was transferring family footage to a PC.. took their equipment and has become some kind of sick, basterdized version of his victim.
    • Is it true SS has a dungeon in his "shack" (not unlike the film Jeepers Creepers)? When you see those wierd Blair Witch style demos he does I'm on the edge of my seat hoping to catch a glimpse of where someone like this lives.. I half expect to see like animal bedding and feces on the floor.
    • Following on from previous point.. SS - could we have a sort of "cribz" look around your shack?
    • Is English SS's first language? If so why is he so bad at it? was he initially raised by animals as some believe?
    • Is this thread an elaborate plan to have people meet him in person for "SSDS Training".. only to never be seen again?
    • Is video really the answer to everything? (including apparently reading books)
    • Is it true that in that wierd code that flashes up in between results shown in SSDS are subliminal messages and slightly too revealing photos of SS himself?
    • Why does SS zoom in on inappropriate areas of female attendants at the meetings he films?
    • Why does the camera sort of shake around more when he does this?
    • Who is that other guy in some of the videos?
    • What are the formulae which translate random pieces of text and media into relevant search results? Are they patented?

SS, hats off to you sir. Don't give up on your dream. I did not think I would ever meet such an amusing and in a way, real, troll.

Thank you everyone all for the laughs - keep it up!

If they don't behave. I'll leave em to the Huge White Crow that stalks my backyard.

And He will untill you show hime the fast fun and easy stuff that SSDS does.

    The thing is:

    • Notepad does searching in a single file quicker than SSDS
    • GDS does making an index quicker than SSDS
    • GDS makes it possible to search for text in all his files, even when they're PDF or emails!
    • Windows Media Player works like a VCR, so he can handle that without making elaborate playlists
    • Windows Photo Gallery indexes his pictures, can do slideshows easily

What every you can't figure out. Let me know.

My dad just doesn't see the use of having a paper full of notes with all SSDS commandos ready to be able to search in one text file, when Notepad and GDS work easier and give quicker results.  All other software he uses is more userfriendly because it uses controls which are common with real life, and that makes it easier for him as common man to adapt to his computer.  SSDS not only lacks these controls, but has a very limited featurescope.

I mean: the guy types with one finger, each letter at a time.  How can you expect him to be using SSDS in any productive way?!

    I present the videoing-in-the-video-game!

If you want to do step n, you have to

    - video in step n-1

    - use your mouse so that at some point n+1 mouse cursors are visible

Here is step 1 (I did not bother including the mumbling, it can be added later on, I mean "YOU can do it!"):

    Step 1

    Who's next?

Urg.  It's the Blair Code Project. I wish I hadn't just eaten breakfast before watching that.

I laughed out loud 3 times!

  • SSDS faster than NotePad

    Not by my test.

    ----------------------------------------

For notepad I Double Click a shortcut on my desktop

Then (Ctrl/o) for open - A quick (Ctrl/V) to paste the source.txt as the target file and then (enter). Grab the slider and drag it to the bottom showing last page.

Close out using upper right close tab.

    -----------------------------------------

for SSDS I have it hi-lited - Hit (enter) to start, (enter) to select the default file search.txt  (enter) for the 'y' option default to show last page

the last page appears ( I always want to see my latest notes)

Keep hitting enter to close out.

    ------------------------------------------

SSDS can be started; show last page and stopped time and again. As quick as one can hit enter.

SSDS is quite a bit faster for this option. I'll do a quick video showing both. Not much difference. Other than SSDS requires just Enter enter enter WordPad uses ctrl/? characters a little slower. But not major.

I'm sure viewers will see a slight advantage to SSDS

Don't bother. You had your chance for a fair showdown. No one is interested in other videos.

You see mate, this is why we've given up. If/when the rest of us use Notepad , or whatever text editor is the default app for a textfile, we simply double click on the file itself, then do (usually) CTRL + End to get to the end of a file - no grabbing of "slider" necessary. But WTF has that got to do with searching anyway? That's called - ermmm - viewing. And having looked at those notes in SSDS, how do you then add to / edit them? Let me guess - in Notepad?
