More Markdown-fun (underscores in links)

_
and*
used to do the same basic thing. They made stuff italic.
Hello _user_ X
Hello user X
Hello *user* X
Hello user XSince recent updates the underscore-markdown doesn't work within links:
[Hello _user_ X](#tag)
Hello user X
while the asterisk still does:
[Hello *user* X](#tag)
Hello user XSo, I think that is new. I always used underscore for markdown for no good reason at all and I never ran into this problem before. If it really did change I am not sure whatelse can break inside links now. Maybe somebody needs to investigate?
Filed Under: Not a huge problem but still weird!

I don't know, but I'm going to guess because Discodevs can't figure out how to tell the difference between underscores in link text and underscores in URLs. I seem to have a vague recollection that links were being broken because underscores in URLs were being treated as formatting (but I don't care enough to search to find out whether I remember correctly); they probably fixed that and broke the link text instead — that seems about their level of competence.

I am saddened but not surprised to learn that I remembered that Discofail correctly.

But this is not in the URL... this is the text of the URL....
Actually, while I am here... [Hello user X] Look... not even a URL...
Filed Under: I believe this is new and stupid!

But this is not in the URL... this is the text of the URL.
You know that. I know that. Apparently incompetent Discodevs (but I repeat myself) don't.

I, uh, had a thread about this on Meta.D months ago but I can't find it.

t'was likely jeffed into oblivion.

Because when you do things like this in a link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_burn_centers______in__the_United_States
It does markdown parsing because underscore is considered a valid marker.

It does markdown parsing because underscore is considered a valid marker.
So it doesn't do markdown parsing when you want it to, and it does markdown parsing when you don't want it to?
-
[hello computer]
[____hello computer]
[____hello computer]
[____hello computer][___hello computer]
What the fuck is going in there, I don't even...
-
I like the inflection of the 2nd one best, but needs more pathos.
-
*g
Because who wants to parse markdown when we have escaped exactly one thing?

Holy shit, I wanted to figure out if DiscoDevs screwed things up or if this is a general Markdown-thing...

Apparently it is for some markdown-parsers not Commonmark... and I don't remember what Markdown-parser Discourse uses but wow... I can understand why so many people here hate the markdown-"standard"
-
Last I heard discourse was not using commonmark, but it was "in the works".
I highly doubt it would fix much though: it's still broken by design

Still looks better than the Megaman 1 box art.

I don't remember what Markdown-parser Discourse uses
A home-brewed "parser" based on regexes.
