Why is Everybody so clueless on the importance of Desktop Search to the Masses?

    In which case you wouldn't have to worry about a crash, because of the mass suicide that would happen anyway.

    What your'e saying is that because you're the God of Search, it is utterly impossible for any of the other 6 billion people in this world to ever possibly have more data than you. And because it's "impossible" you see no point in dealing with it.

    Get it through that mile-thick skull of yours that you are NOT the center of the universe. Because you can't conceive of it doesn't mean it's not possible. Quite the contrary, it is VERY possible, and very frequently occurs too. Just because you only have X megabytes of email doesn't mean someone else can't have X*100 megabytes, or more. You are NOT the authority on what's "too big" or "too small" or "just right".

    @SpectateSwamp said:

    Again, you seem to think you're the center of the universe and have the right to define what's possible and what's not possible. Your "real world" might be accurate for everyone's Aunt who merely emails a few recipes back and forth. The rest of us use email for than that, and WILL have more than 3 of 4 recipes or family photos in our in-/out-boxes.

    People have more than a couple hundred megabytes of data. And guess what, it won't be all emails. People use their computers for more than posting bad videos (really, a 60+ set of town council meetings on Youtube that no one is watching? c'mon...) and filling up forums with moronic blather.

    But since you seem to hold email as the gold standard, how about my in-box? I have 649 megabytes of email stuff in my Thunderbird folders (and all of it plain text, before you go whining about that, too). No, I can't get rid of it. Most of it is work related. Orders from my boss, requests from clients, a few jokes from friends I keep around. I might not read all of it, I might not even want all of it, but I have to keep it, as it is a RECORD OF MY WORK.

    Maybe in your small pathetic corner of the world you can get away with keeping a couple small email files and deleting the rest of it, but you know what? Yet again, you are not the center of the universe, and your way is NOT the way other people do things.

    @SpectateSwamp said:

    You seem to think that SSDS allows people to know what's going on. You claim that other desktop searches are bad because they use index and "hide" information from people. Well, do you know what's going on in your computer? Do you know how you pressing on the enter key to get your next search result actually works? Do you know how the computer can retreive your data from the harddrive? Do you know how the data is physically stored? Do you know WHERE the data is physically stored? Do you know anything about harddrive technology? How about processors? What are the exact instructions for the CPU to do whatever it has to do to find your search terms?

    Is SSDS using 'cmp' instructions in a loop? Perhaps VB is compiling your actual search code to use Boyer-Moore matching? Maybe it's using 'repz cmpsb' instructions? For that matter, do you know how Visual Basic is taking your code and compiling it into that search.exe you're so infatuated with? How about the linker? Must be some magic going on there... but you know everything, so you MUST know all the details of how everything happens.

    What? You say you don't know? Oh my... how horrible. Your computer is hiding information from you...

    Therefore by YOUR OWN RULES, since you don't know what's going on, you shouldn't be using SSDS. It hides too much detail from you.

    The file chosen is the source code to Ubuntu linux. Earlier you agreed that SSDS could perform searches in this source tree.

    You have told us repeatedly your search can handle anything that comes it's way. I guess you lied. WDS and GDS have NO problem with this tree.

    No you won't. You don't want to stand up to any tests. You know (way way deep down in that rotting brain of yours) that your search is crap, and has no usefulness to anybody. Any test you come up with will be as retarded as the application you made in the first place.

    You have lost the challenge by forfeit. How ridiculous that a 'desktop search' could not even search a source tree with all plaintext files!

    @SpectateSwamp said:

    Maybe not here. But somewhere.

    Of course you won't do it here. Because you know you will lose, and you cannot bear to see your baby fail. And we would laugh at your test anyway, since none of your criteria ever have anything to do with searching anything.

    I'll probably post more political junk from tonight. I hear it may get ruff. I'll leave the camera running when I make a break for it.

    No thanks. You have lost the showdown. You are no longer welcome here.

    We gave you the chance to pitch your product. Now go away in peace.

    I was hoping for a showdown with some search masters / experts. Showing what search can do, rather than making up some set of criteria that would never exist in the real world. Ever. Same thing with all the Desktop Search Reviews. Written by somebody who took the program for a spin and had no idea what was really going on. What the possibilities are. The Showdown format is worse way worse than the criteria seen elsewhere. I'll declare my own showdown format.

    I knew you were going to say something like that. That's poor, man. Really poor. The purpose of the showdown as outlined by MasterPlanSoftware is to determine how well your search scales with the amount of data. You're claiming that your search is way faster than indexing search (however, based on a small text file). To prove that your search is really fast, MasterPlanSoftware wanted you to handle a big load of data (normal amount to everybody but you, an incredible amount for you) - just to see how well your program could handle it in case anybody had that much data (which we all do, by the way).

    The scenario MasterPlanSoftware has outlined does exist in the real world. Remember the amount of data I told you about when I provided my numbers before? And that's only Microsoft API and my own Visual Studio 2005 source code. Other APIs, sources (Visual Studio 2003), documentation and documents not included. Only because something is hard for you to grasp does not mean it doesn't exist.

    There is really no need for you to declare your own showdown format - it is just this showdown or no showdown. What we want to see is a proper comparison for search speed (no random pictures, no  random text, no random video). You claimed to have written the world's greatest search tool, so we would like to have some proof regarding its search capabilities. This is not about video or audio or pictures. You have not provided any proper, comparable or even consistant information here.

    If you want us to evaluate the quality of your program, you need to go by our rules and give us numbers we can compare. The scenario MasterPlanSoftware has come up with is fair, because it provides the same data, the same basics and the same rules for every search program that wants to take part in the showdown. So stick to our rules or leave it, but if you leave it, don't expect us to take you seriously ever again (supposed we ever did).

    What do you mean by "written by somebody who took the program for a spin and had no idea what was really going on"? Does that really mean "My program can not handle separate files!"? Well, that's why MasterPlanSoftware considered the merging process to be counted in the search contest. Does that mean "My program can not handle that much data!"? Well, tough luck! Does that mean "I know already that my program is too slow compared to indexing!"? Well, then you know what you need to do, don't you?

    Stick to our rules or go. But defining new rules just because the existing rules make you look bad - boooo!

    Maybe not here. But somewhere.

    In that case what would you consider to be a suitable test of a search tool? Searching does not include random videos or pictures - that would be the job of a media playaer or photo display tool.

    The proposed challenge was to search a large volume of source code - as this is a programmers forum this is a task we all find useful and as such something we would like to see (I've asked often enough here for you to demonstrate searching a source tree and had no response).

    Saying you are designing a challenge that suits you and then saying you are not even going to tell anyone here what it is just smacks of failure on your part.

Lets be honest unless his challenge is random <blah blah> fun <blah> inmail.txt <blah> telco <blah> he would never win anyway.

    So based on what you've said, you shouldn't be afraid of this showdown. If a few hundred megs are fast, surely 2 gigs (at most 10*a few hundred megs) should be pretty fast, too. And if you really have DSL, it won't take long to download it. The burden of proof is on you, not us - we've shown you video of WDS/GDS being fast.

    Way way harder to kick me out of open political forums than some cyber forum. They have tried to get me to leave a number of times. So much for an open political system.

    I'll keep posting my demo videos, explaining how search hasn't changed much from the mid 80's. Except this one is faster and does, video, music, pics, fires up background jobs and text retrieval to name a few.

    Besides, dad's happily clicking away in WDS.  He thinks I was taking the piss at him by having him try SSDS.

    Oh, and the novelty of launching background jobs to display questions on the screen: http://www.netpresenter.com/, but any free flash screensaver news feed reader will do.

    I don't know where you get your high speeds. When doing the trapline videos. People wanted pictures because the video was slow. Uploading multi gig files fast. Not here and not telus. I may check out satellite net providers. Better for sending and receiving large files I'm sure.

  • @SpectateSwamp said:

    Good luck. Satellite internet connections are 'ok' for downloading (internet -> you), but utterly useless for upload (you -> internet). If you do sign up for one, you'll find out very quickly that you don't get a transmitter... just a receiver. You'll have to install special software on your pc to split your connection, and still have to use a dialup connection (or dsl, or cable) for your uploads.

    And of course good luck trying to play any online games - satellite link latency is extremely high compared to landline connections.

    @SpectateSwamp said:

    When doing the trapline videos. People wanted pictures because the video was slow.

    Umm... you were doing video because people wanted pictures? Is that like going to 7-11 because someone wanted to meet you at the local Tim Horton's?

    @SpectateSwamp said:

    If WMP is the default media player on your machine, then that's what Windows will start up to process your MCIsendstring call. Saying that it's not WMP because you're just doing a function call is like saying that calling a cab for a ride is not transportation because all your did was make a phone call.

     @SpectateSwamp said:

    Am I the only one that can do video.

    No, you're the only one who uses a camcorder to record yourself playing a video on your computer. Why don't you go for broke and record youself playing a video you recorded of you playing a video on the computer? Every time you re-video one of your videos, you destroy more and more of the video content. Do it enough times and you end up with pure static for a picture, and your useless muttering in the background.

    Look up "generation loss" sometime. It applies to analog copies, which is what you're doing. It might be a digital picture on the screen, it might be a digital cam corder, but once you're recording what's on your screen, it's an analog copy.

    Why don't you learn to use a video editing program? We don't care if you don't like to make copies of your videos and prefer to keep the entire long file around. But if you want people to be able to SEE what you're doing in SSDS, then use a proper video editor, so we can SEE the text on the screen, SEE what you're typing, and SEE what the results are.

    But since your refuse, and continue to make these utterly crappy and utterly useless videos of videos of videos, all we can see is optical garbage, accompanied by your muttering.

    Use a video editor. Extract the relevant piece of video that you want to upload to Youtube. Upload it. Then delete it. YOu won't be wasting space storing all these "extra" video clips, and we might stand a chance of being able to SEE what you're trying to accomplish.

    Oh, and by the way, SSDS does not 'do' video and does not 'do' audio. What it does is text. The fact that some of this text refers to audio and video files has nothing to do with the fact that you didn't search the contents of the A/V files. You searched a text file.. It's the functional equivalent of looking at a bunch of yellow post-it notes and finding the one that says "mouse video is in second drawer of kitchen cabinet". The fact that SSDS can tell windows to start playing that file also has nothing to do with SSDS "doing" video. Like you said, all you're doing is an MCIsendstring call.

    It depends on how much you pay and who your provider is. There's satellite that sends via dialup and receives via satellite, and there's also bi-directional satellite that uses the satellite connection for both upload and download.
