My reasons:
(1) I want to protest against American imperialism, which I regard as the cause of most of all evil in the world: wars, tyranny, poverty, migration.
(2) I want to protest against EU tyranny, which is mostly the result of US imperialism.
(3) I want to demonstrate my sovereignty, something I would welcome to see much more often in science and politics.
In particular, I dislike that the USA and the EU aggressively promote a way of life that conflicts with my own way of life. I dislike the flood of immigrants they caused to come here - come here to replace unprofitable Europeans like me.
After so many years of hard work on TREEFINDER, I have still not been paid any reward.
I want to stress that this license change is not against my colleagues in the USA, but against a small rich elite there that misuses the country's power to rule the world.
The USA is our worst enemy. I have collected many links to background information, including some in English language, here.

I'm a fan of open(-ish?) borders, but when you have a welfare state you have some serious reasons not to want them.
Immigration laws sound very unfair to me. eu and us have all this wealth from doing a huge part of intelectual work that benefits the entire globe, but would these countries function by itself? How much would an Android cost without cheap workers outside their borders? And having some privilege just for birthing in the right place is not very different from royalty. We have some kind of nobility and plebs people division here, not much different from a medieval monarchy.
This sounds no less crazy to me than the scientist, though.

What's the entitlement? Why is someone entitled to go to another country? In other contexts, that gets called out as colonialism or cultural imperialism.

You do realize ancient Greeks thought the Earth was a sphere, and had damn near precise calculations of its circumference? And you do realize that Columbus didn't have a problem getting funding because everyone thought he'll fall of the edge, but because he had his own calculations that said that the circumference is much smaller by which account he expected to be able to reach India? He was wrong, but hitting upon the Americas saved his and his crew from dying at sea, because there's no way in hell they'd get to India otherwise.
The issue at the time was geocentism vs. heliocentrism, not whether the Earth is round or not. You know, the thing that produced this madness in order to try and explain retrograde movement of the other planets in the Solar system?

There's a big difference between competing to make shoes and living next door and by the way I'm now paying for a lot of your expenses. Which is what tends to happen with massive migrations of poor and uneducated people and modern welfare states.

A lot of people also assume that science should drive policy, ignoring all of the other factors that are important. And sometimes they mistake that for politicization.

The problem with society is we're in an inconsistent state. We claim we care about people, but we only REALLY care about the people near us, i.e. in our own country.
When someone in your city is starving and can't find a job, we all agree (except some Americans I guess) that the government should provide some food and shelter to them, and there would probably be a shitstorm if we just let them die out. When someone in Africa is dying, we say "poor guy", and maybe donate a dollar to some NGO to feel better.
So when a bunch of Middle Eastern people knock at your door, politicians can't just say "sorry I'd rather let you die out there", because we're all pretending that's not true, even though for the most part it is.
