Yes. It is all possible. In Windows Media player, in Winamp, and any other media package. That must be why YOU USE WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER IN SSDS.

We have given up on explaining the poor quality of the source, we were never going to win; but we did our best to convince you of the truely awful mess you have created.

Please, before creating any more of this pointless 'feature' videos could you try and show, explain, give step by step guides on how to accomplish the many things people have been asking - e.g. how to search a source code tree for a function or interface name without first requiring a merge.

Even better produce a video that attempts the proposed challenge - it should be easy for you after all your tool is so good and bestest ever searching thingy what could possibly preventing you from attempting the challenge?

Perhaps, but then why not stick with that textfile, stuff it into SSDS, and work off that? After all, SSDS is all you'd ever need. It's not as if anyone would want, like, I don't know, maybe... EDIT billing information 'n all.

What makes me wonder is how a telco/cable company could be desperate enough to hire Swampie to do a billing system conversion. If it was in Alberta, that'd mean Telus, Rogers, and/or Shaw, none of which are mom-n-pop-hiring-junior-so-he-can-afford-the-rent-in-the-trailer-park type operations.

Or perhaps the insanity is a recent development, and back in the day he might have a modicum of skill and was able to do such projects. Wonder what drove him over the edge... "GOTO insanity_3071234234123" perhaps?

You are ClueLess.  All office documents are immutable after creation.  Nobody except the people with a lot of ClueLessNess wants to edit a document.  Then it should be in plain text for the power of SSDS.

Like he says, it was back in the Stone Age, so maybe they thought that horrible code and interfaces were just par for the course.  Or maybe he only talked a good enough game to get in the door, then they actually saw his WTFs in action and sent him right back out the door.

  • How about an easier file to get.

    @wooter said:

Yours showed all matches, while you had to press a key to move to the next page.  Try moving back a page with SSDS

Glad you asked this question. There is a 'pause' option. When that is active. The results are displayed then a short pause (based on tt??) value then on to the n ext page. Just set tt to tt.1 to slow it down just a bit. There is a "p" for previous match option. and "b" for backup 1 screen. These options could easily have buttons attached and a nice skin.

Maybe if you made that test file of OURS a large .txt one. I could get it easier. Nothing moves more smoothly between systems than plain text.

  • @SpectateSwamp said:

Isn't that like saying "Nothing weighs heavier than 1 ton of lead.

It isn't the file format that moves fast or slow, it's the size of the file.  I'm pretty sure if I had a 10MB text file and a 10MB mp3 they'd transfer at about the same speed.

I also find it ironic, that YOU of all people are bashing plain text, after all, plain text is the savior of SSDS, isn't it?

All of my source code, no matter the language, is in plain text somewhere, but it's not merged.  Google Desktop manages to search it all, in tons of different files, practically instantly.  I mean literally in the blink of an eye.  I get context (the containing/surrounding line) too.

  • @MasterPlanSoftware said:

Probably can't figure out how to extract the source files from the Ubuntu .ISO file specified in the challenge. .ISO ain't plain text, so it's a complete mystery to the Swampie.

  • Twisted rules discriminate against SSDS

How many gig is that file. Even with my DSL that will take a THOUSAND minutes per Gig. Nearly a day to download such a monster. I imagine you have the file you need on your computer? I'll make copies of my outmail 70 times and merge that. for 2.8 gig. Takes not time at all to run this test.

Absolutely not. This is the 'control' file. The only variable in this contest is the program that does the searching.

Spectate, follow the rules, or be declared the loser of the showdown.

Your DSL sucks, then. My cable modem can grab 2.2gig in just over an hour, at around 500k/s. So you get maybe 17k/s? You sure you're on DSL and not dialup? Or perhaps DSL-lite?

I'm not good at impersonating, so I'll just give a few possible scenarios:

SS, the minister of finance and a flaming speech for the "Coins for the Masses Act" - paper money can after all fly away and credit cards are only for the ClueLess.

SS, the minster of information of pre-war Iraq (that in fact, is a role that would fit him quite well, no harm done, yet anything coming out of his mouth is ridiculous)

SS, the pilot - probably overwriting the flight computer with SSDS to search the destination coordinates

SS, your neighbor (I do not dare to think this any further)

SS, Bill Gates (we'd all use something even worse than BOB now)

SS, manager of a tv network, (24/7 5s random clips)

SS, bartender, mixing the "CockTail for the Masses" (no idea what that would contain, ugh)

Really.. any possible position you can think of he'd be either annoying or dangerous.

BOFH replacement trainee. He'd be significantly less harmless once he fails a few of the BOFH's tests. Actually his proximity to a BOFH would prove to beneficial to out current situation.

    That's it!  That's his secret!

Swampy always says that "random" is the key to enlightenment.  He's been randomly mixing any liquids he can find around the shack to come up with a magical mind-altering elixer.  That's how he can continue to believe that his SSDS is the way to inner peace.

  •  Okay, you seem to be mis-understanding the rules, Swamp... I'll clarify the

as per (2) -> You must use the specified data files. this is to ensure fairness of the contest as to not give anyone an advantage in the situation. (Different files give different results). Also, these files provided give all different arrays of data as to ensure results aren't just repeated. Furthermore, it provides the best situation as before using your program, most people don't have their files merged. This displays how your program would be used by someone new to your progam.

as per (3) -> You must start recording the video upon having the files to be searched in front of you before you open your search. This is to ensure fairness as from the perspective to someone once again, new to your program.

as per (7) and (3) ->  Your video must be readable so the results can be verified by a third party. (as so they can follow your video and do everything you did to ensure you didn't cheat, both sides will undergo this verification)

Deviation from these rules will display you are unwilling to prove yourself in a contest that will display who is the best in this whole thing, thus you will be forfeiting your last chance to display any credibility and you will be seen as a fraud who gives no proof in anything, who dodges everything.
