Thats just it... everyone else DOES have the occasional need to search these. Why would we want to merge them? We can just type in our query and get our answer in any other search app.

NOBODY. WANTS. TO. SEE. ANY. MORE. USELESS. VIDEOS.

You are just going to record some random stuff happening in your taped-together app, then say "See? There is your answer?".

How about you use your keyboard to type up simple answers to the simple questions asked. It would take you LESS time to do that than make a video.

You certainly cannot compare to anything resembling Desktop Search.

  •  Alright. Here it is: The Great Desktop Search Showdown

Spectate, this is your chance. Your one and only chance.

    Rules:

    1) Your video can be .gif, mpg, avi, or any other major video format.

    2) You must use the same files. You may download them here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/source/hardy-src-1.iso [2.1GB]

    3) Your example must show EVERYTHING required to search. If there is merging, it must happen during the video. Indexing? You guessed it. Must happen during the video. Unzip during the video if necessary. The clock starts AFTER the source code tree is unzipped. Also, any configuration on the search application's side specific to this search MUST be in the video. The results MUST be 100% verifiable.

    4) The search term must be the same in all videos. I will set that as: {

    5) The clock stops when all results have been returned, and the first and the last results have been returned. Also, the original files where these came from must be opened in an editor.

    6) You can use any software or hardware you want.

    7) All video must be 100% understandable. This means a camcorder recording the screen is out of the question. Use a screen capture program.

    8) The winner will be determined on this forum based on speed and number of steps (ease of use).

Any questions/concerns? Lets make this final. Spectate, this is a fair chance for you. Don't screw it up.

I'm guessing there will be more than a few files found, and I have a feeling I'll kill my computer trying to open them all.

No, I am talking about just opening the first and last result's file.

  • @SpectateSwamp said:

Yup and I saw all 124,140 matches. Your demo showed nothing. Maybe a handful of matches. Pathetic.

Yours showed all matches, while you had to press a key to move to the next page.  Try moving back a page with SSDS.  On top of that, your SSDS only searches one file, while GDS and WDS display results of many files.

     @SpectateSwamp said:

Maximum indexing file size for these search engines is as follows:
     (1) Yahoo would not index a 81MB text file
     (2) Google would not index a 44MB text file
(2.5) Exalead would not index a 19.78MB text file.

You have any references to those claims?

    @SpectateSwamp said:

Spectate Swamp has no known text file size limit!!!

As you could see in another screen cap someone made, your SSDS borked on the Linux kernel source code.

    @SpectateSwamp said:

talking about getting thousands of results in less than 2 seconds. Come on. You have seen nothing in that time. Those counts and times are irrelevant.

I've seen all I need to see in that time. You would not be able to tell - you've never used a proper search program. But anyway, let me sum up what I've seen in the sample I provided:

    • The search time (1.45 seconds)
    • The number of matches (6600+some)
    • The names and paths of the files that contained my search term
    • A full text preview
    • The type of item (email? text file? picture?)

Let me also sum up what I was able to do with my results:

    • Sort them by name
    • Sort them by author
    • Sort them by relevance
    • See an instant preview
    • Double click to open a result file in the associated application
    • See my search results in context (for example: did "public class" refer to a C# class or was it in a sentence like "I attended a public class")

Now let's look at what I needed to do to achieve this:

    • Install Windows Desktop Search
    • Configure the folders that should be indexed
    • Let the indexer run peacefully in the background
    • Type the search term
    • View the results (again: I was able to view the list after no more than 2 seconds!)

Now let me look at what we've (not) seen in the "video" you provided:

    • You need to press enter to see the next result (which is ridiculous when getting more than 10 results...)
    • We did not see the file the item came from (email? local file?)
    • We've seen a bunch of text lines scroll through (the point of that being...?)
    • We did not see the surrounding text.
    • We did not see how what you'd need to do to go back to a previous match.

Let me sum up what you could do with your search results:

    • You know your search term is somewhere in the file
    • ...?

Finally, let's look at what you need to do to achieve this:

    • "Install" SSDS and hope it runs the first time you start it
    • Merge all the stuff you need to search into one file (ridiculous for everybody but you)
    • Find all your pictures, videos, PDFs, music and whatever else your program can't read and manually index that (WTF?)
    • Type a series of cryptic commands in a sad "user interface"

My approach took about an hour including indexing, with about 5 minutes work on my part (installing the software, configuring the folders - and I've never used WDS before). Your approach would take:

    • At least a day for merging all the files
    • At least a day at the "Swamp Shack" or watching silly videos to learn how to use the commands
    • Daily manual maintenance work on the "index" (at least 2 hours when you're changing many files a day which I do while programming)

Thats one hour on my part, 2 days + 2 hours daily on your part.

Those counts and times are not irrelevant, believe me. Again (maybe re-stating stuff is the clue to success?):

    • Your search does not work properly
    • There are simple tools included in every operating system known to mankind that do what you do in less time
    • There are simple tools that can be installed for free (real Desktop Search applications) that are far better than your tool as to usability, speed and the way they let you handle search results
    • Nobody is interested in how you manage your data! While SSDS may be the best tool for the insane way you manage your data, it is completely useless to the rest of mankind (i.e. The Masses)

    @SpectateSwamp said:

When you view the data it has been found. NO viewie No findy

You still seem to think you are the search expert! You asked for it! Here's what I think: The data is undoubtedly (do you spell it that way?) just "there". When I perform a search on my pool of data, I'm interested in the following things:

    1. Does the thing I'm looking for exist? (Yes or no)
    2. If so, where is it? (Location) Maybe also how many matches are there? (Number of matches)
    3. Is the match really what I've been looking for? (Detail)

That's what most people would define as the purpose of a search (other people would say that the process of searching is the purpose of searching, but I'll leave that out here). So when would I consider a search successful?

    1. If I can determine whether there was a match to my search conditions
    2. If I can tell where the matches were found
    3. If I can check whether one of the matches is exactly what I was looking for

While good search tools (like WDS) handle 1. and 2. within a very short time (in my samples under 2 seconds for a total of about 2GB of data) and also give me the number of matches, your tool takes 15 times longer on a far smaller amount of data to answer question 1. only!

While good search tools (like WDS) allow me to browse all search results up and down, select a match an verify whether match is really what I need using an instant preview, your tool allows me to scroll through the list top to bottom (one at a time) only without showing me the context of my search result, the part of the file I'd need to look in or even where the file is.

While I have proven that I can find the only two relevant matches for my "ImpersonateUser" query from a pool of data that is about 2GB in size in under 15 seconds (that includes: time to type the search term, the actual index search and opening both matches in a running instance of Visual Studio 2005), you have spent a significantly longer amount of time just browsing your results.

Stating that "When you view the data is has been found" is wrong. You've probably been thinking about "Does a falling tree make a sound when nobody is around"-question too long. All data that in any way matches my criteria has been found as soon as I have the ability to answer questions 1., 2. and 3. I can do that 2 seconds after I hit Enter for my search term, since WDS instantly shows me a complete list of possible matches (question 1.), including the files names and folder names (question 2.) and I can either choose to use the preview or open the file right away (question 3.). It takes a fraction of the amount of time it takes your program to just read the index.

So, Mr. Search Expert, you should return your title - it just doesn't fit you. You know nothing about search. You should stop searching at all and begin to organize your data properly (i.e. create properly named folders and file names, sort your files in to the right folders). That would save you a lot of time.

Numbers/statistics are important. Quick search results are important. A proper presentation of the results is important. Ease of use is important. You can not provide any of that.

Videos showing how to use things? Not important! Videos showing how to compile things? Not important! Your source code for the masses? Not important!

But the most important clue for you is: NO brainie, NO writy!

    <Original text snipped>

I don't merge video or music or pictures just text. They never get printed and it's just the details I'm interested in. Same with emails. 7,408 mp3s with random and random start would be quick to test out. Your 4000+ photos need a vewing once in a while. Random makes it better. The tech stuff should be in some form of text. The more of the text you have the more you'll like this search. The videos have just scratched the surface.  I'll do more video demos. Now that I have the startup and exe build out of the way.

Media player alredy randomises the music, I can slide show the photos direct from explorer using the photo gallery app and it will randomise them. How does SSDS beat these two applications that work just fine?

The tech stuff includes pdfs with diagrams etc. and are perfectly fine as they are - they do not need to be converted to plain text thank you very much, the source code is text just as separate files not as a single large file though. Please answer my questions regarding how your app would help me search the source code tree for a term without merging the source files into one large file. I really would prefer a simple explanation over a video - tell me what to type at which prompt to search all my source code for the term IDisposable and I will happily video that with my timings to see just how long it takes.

Yet again you have failed to explain just how to use your tool to perform a search I would find useful.

I've had many an argument with drunks - they will randomly jump thoughts about, repeat themselves and contradict all in one sentence. After a couple of hours of you arguing rationally in the face of chaos (and completely sobering up during the time, meanwhile the drunk has consumed 20 more beers), you just can't help yelling at them and the SenseLessNess. And this thread has become exactly like arguing with a drunk.

Really, when any argument gets like this there is no choice but to just walk away. There is no point in 'having the last word' or 'making your point' because it either won't be understood or completely ignored.

There will be one Search?.exe for each demonstration. All preset to go. Hold the enter key down and look out.

Again.  All configuration specific to this competition must be done in the video. You lose if anyone challenges you, installs your program, and follows the same steps with different results.

Absolutely not. This is a fair set of rules. You will do exactly what is in the list, no more, no less. If you want to show off some other 'feature'. Submit a different video.

No modifications OR additions. Do it according to the rules, or you lose.

This cannot be any clearer. This is your chance, don't screw it up.

Has anyone figured out how sorting can help you search a text file sequentially yet?  I think that bothers me almost as much as anything else I've seen in this thread.

He does not understand the rules, you see? There will never be a competition - this is not because we don't set up proper rules, but because he doesn't get what he's supposed to do.

Even though I'd love to see him go through your list of rules in a video I can already tell you what he's going to do: He'll video in his screen showing what happens when he presses the Enter key long enough on some file he randomly picks. Maybe there will even be one video for each item on your list. I wonder if he's going to figure out what to do with the .img file...

Also, the outcome of this challenge will be that he claims to have won even though the whole world can see (once more) that he failed miserably.

This is gonna be fun! :-)

I understand this better than anyone, I think. I have already done this on another forum, and he failed miserably. After that he pretty much stopped talking about the great search showdown.

But everyone here is so upset and disorganized, lets get organized and put up the best comparisons we can. Then we can let this whole issue die, with SSDS in a flaming death spiral.

Even if he feels he won, who cares? As long as the record shows which was best, we should all be happy. if anyone strays from the criteria I defined, it will be an automatic loss.

Yup. I can see the level of knowledge on SSDS has gone up Tremendously.

Anyway the latest video is done and uploaded. But I can't find it on Google. Maybe they are a little behind on their video processing.

24Mb takes about 1/2 hour to upload. I'll try resending it. 2 Random sessions 1 video and 1 oldie pics. Going head to head.

Maybe they started using SSDS to find the video files... You might as well consider it lost. Maybe if they play all their movies with random on, they can have someone sit there for the next 5 years looking for it.

This is all a waste of time. Where is your Showdown entry?

proper rules, but because he doesn't get what he's supposed to do.

Swamp, in order to make this fair, you MUST follow the rules. Remember, the search you compete against will have to build its entire index DURING the showdown- this should give you an advantage, surely?

Bear in mind, we're all logical people here- if you win this, we won't dismiss it. This could really strengthen your argument.

The rules say the index of the source code download must be built during the video. Not the entire HD.

People seems to be misreading this, clarification was needed.

All that should be needed is for the file to finish being unzipped during the video.

Oh yeah! That is REALLY amazing! Two windows showing a picture "slideshow" (if you'd like to call it that). If it had been within the same window, maybe. But any idiot can open a video player and some random picture viewer, arrange them on the desktop and hit the respective GO buttons.

What does that have to do with searching? We are talking about searching here, not silly slideshow stuff. It would not even take me a day to write a program that does video and picture slideshow within the same window! But there's no need to do that: Media Player and Picasa can to it already, you know?

Still waiting for your search contest video. I wonder how long it's going to take you...?

  • not really a knock, but I found it funny in the video you zoom in on a boy (7 or 8 years old) black-and-white outfit from the 40's or so and say "That's my older brother Jimmy.  Many years ago." Just in case any of us thought that it was a picture of Jimmy from yesterday (which would make you about 6 or so since he's older).

Again, not a criticism, just struck me as funny

Pluss it gets me closer to being #1000

What the hell does that have to do with searching? You are displaying two random slideshows side by side - big deal (I could do tha same with media player, or photo gallery, or through a screen saver). Why don't you try showing a video that demonstrates how to do any of the things people here have asked to see - everybody on this forum is totally underwhelmed with your applications ability to display pictures and video (given they have other things that do this) yet this is all you seem to demo. This is not searching, try and show your app'searching for files containing a particular phrase' or similar. Try meeting the challenge recently posted here - then we might be interested.

Also stop posting crappy camcorder videos thay are rubbish and totally out of focus. Failing that buy a tripod and use the damn thing.

That really is the stupidest use of a computer I have ever seen.

And yes, you could do that with the tools that come with windows (in fact, so are you, SSDS is just calling media player anyway).

How does this have ANYTHING to do with 'Desktop Search'?

  • SSDS does more - a lot more

They can be controlled so that video, stills and music play at once. Large font scrolling text at the bottom of the screen. It's all possible.

Not long. Maybe a Swampie out there wants to contribute. I'm not alone you know. We are watching this thread very closely. Boooo
