His bogus familiarity is neither deserved nor welcome.

So, uh, what with Discosearch being broken; and for that matter, the 900 threads which DC "helpfully" marked as read for me, I have no idea if this has come up before, but:
My synopsis of what transpired:
4. Some math guy gets caught out by bikeshedding/design churn on math.stackexchange.
8. atwood accuses guy of Doing it Wrong™
15. atwood sends guy a patronizing private message
16. guy takes offense to atwood; goes public with message
23. attwood → guy: "NO U"; guy → attwood: "NO U**emphasized text"
42. lather, rinse and repeat a few times; garnish with sage and tarragon.
Seems like an eerily familiar behaviour pattern to me...Filed under: markdown wai u no renumber my list this one time, eh?

UX issue found, buried, lost.

Bug report: Discourse has too many bridges. Why do we need so many? It's an unmaintainable hellscape of 90s UX. Too many bridges means too many choices and possible paths. Someone might Do It Wrong.
Solution: Burn as many bridges as possible, so that there is only The One True Way left.
Filed under: And that One True Install will be meta.derp

Jeff Atwood is a dick, but so is everybody on that site who assumes having a high "score" makes you some kind of genius superhero.
-
It's like some kind of black hole of superdickery which is collapsing in on itself.
-
What about calculating super-villain?

K-k-k-kombo! Yes, I am suggesting that you are affiliated with the KKK!

I'm actually affiliated with every group. KKK, girl scouts, muffin of the week club, Hetro-Normative Turtle Alliance. All of them. It really gums up the databases of the secret profilers cabal (whom I am also a member of).
Filed under: Plus, with all these newsletters and pamphlets, I never have to buy toilet paper again.

Has @bra-cox made it into the 5% mostly from posting in one topic?

I first read that as
KKK girl scouts
which was funnier

Apparently Discourse isn't a to accusing people of being murderous trans-phobes.
And now to test to see if my greasemonkey script for insert a "tag" works: [key]Ctrl[/key] [key]`[/key]

Good grief. Is it really so hard to add a checkbox somewhere in the user profile which determines whether you want to use the "submit comment upon hitting enter" or not?
-
Oh boy, that OP sounds about the most mathiest of math nerds ever. Read his post in a nasal pedantic tone of voice for the full effect.
Re: the flame war.
Interesting. A normal user would have been slapped into oblivion a long time ago. But because this guy is apparently a well known math genius, Atwood is wringing his hands trying to get him to properly use this user unfriendly editor without escalating the situation.
Nice find.

Hah, losers...
err...wait.

Of course not. But this guy is, like, an expert on the psychology of users and user interfaces. There's probably even a blog post pointing out how hitting enter is good for creating constructive comments, complete with dozens of comments confirming his genius.

Second paragraph:
nontrivial
Ok, not a fake, now I can keep reading.
Filed under: Mathematicians adore the word "trivial", don't they?

Not a blank line before list?
-
Yes, yes, but are they paying**emphasized text customers?

Filed under: Mathematicians adore the word "trivial", don't they?
My math teacher at college couldn't say "r", so this came out "tvivial". Everything was tvivial with that guy.

I know Robin Chapman from
sci.math
. He's a big deal in the internet math community (also a very nice guy).Oh, this is 4 year old drama. yawn
-
And another one.
Apparently, Atwood liked to go around the whole community moderators thing and just Jeff things around his way.
-
At least it didn't get Jeffed into Oblivion.
Although Discourse being the steaming pile of incompetence that it is, that link just loads as a white screen.
-
that link just loads as a white screen
Stupid, worthless clickjacking/tracking. Why is this even a thing? Epeen? Badges for how many people clicked your link? How about badges for how many people clicked the link, failed to be redirected to the target, said "Fuck it," and gave up? "Discourse fucked my link" s.
-
Fuck knows. I'd not mind it if it fucking worked properly. But I guess that applies to most of Dischorse.
-
I'd not mind it if it fucking worked properly.
I'm certainly not a fan of clicktracking in general. Internal to this site, meh; I'd rather not, but it's not a big deal. Tracking external clicks; don't do that. Taking the most basic of possible browser functionality — following a link — that should Just Work™ and hijacking it in a way that completely breaks it (especially for no good reason) — the developer that implemented that should be shot dead on sight.
Filed under: Just venting; not promoting actual violence, although the "developer" should never be allowed near a computer again.

I can't see them. They keep jellypotatoing in and out of the screen.
-
Stupid, worthless clickjacking/tracking.
Yah. White screen fail.
Copying the URL address and pasting it into a new tab you manually opened like it's still 1992 seems to work for me....
-
I think middle click has always worked (except in preview, because of course)
-
As does right-click; open new window/tab or, I think, middle-click.
-
Anyway, lest we become distracted: Discourse is terrible.
-
And another one.
Oh - if we're doing resignation-letter stuff over his moderation policies - here was mine:
https://what.thedailywtf.com/t/so-new-forums-software/51137/172?u=pjh
-
The guy from the op had already left by that point http://meta.math.stackexchange.com/questions/2100/is-robin-chapman-a-moderator
Jeff just wants to be loved — and he's willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen.
-
Apparently, Atwood liked to go around the whole community moderators thing and just Jeff things around his way.
The more things change...
-
the math community can be... strange
Gotta love Jeff passing judgement on other communities he's not really part of but for which he built software.
-
Exactly. Let's start a genital warts community based on Disgust and see whether Jeff has any strong views on that topic
