Inedo spam WTF

  • So, I should've known my free TDWTF coffee mug wasn't that free. I keep getting these emails from Karl at Inedo, though the latest one must've gotten tangled up in the webs of some crazy algorithm.

    Did you get my messages?

Not sure if you saw the latest version, but we’ve made some pretty cool updates to BuildMaster since you last looked; check it out: http://inedo.com/buildmaster

    Hi-

It’s been some time since we last heard from you, I hope you’ve been well!

A while back you were looking into our software BuildMaster; for a short review, feel free to check out our overview video: http://inedo.com/buildmaster#video.

BuildMaster is the ultimate platform to manage the build-release-deploy cycle of your applications in a way that brings the entire team together.

Is implementing a culture of DevOps still a priority?

    Cheers,
    Karl

I have no such thing. Also, I received only 1 copy of this email, not 331 (thank goodness).

edit: and I never replied. So what's with all the "RE:"?

You probably want to @-mention @apapadimoulis. Looks like a marketing email generator miss-fired on the second half of the message.

The fake RE seems to be pretty standard these days, I guess to fool people with poor memories that they have an existing relationship with the company? Our corporate spam filter is full of it.

I've never had any email after receiving my mug BTW, did you express an interest in any of the products ever?

I kinda led poor Karl on. He's probably still there hoping I finally get promoted to management and pitch BuildMaster...

Right now we have problems pitching the concept of version control, so there are precious little chances of that.

Karl doesn't mind, and he wouldn't get offended if you downloaded just for a free mug!

We here that quite a bit. We do have a free version, but it doesn't seem to be good enough for a lot of people. Any suggestions on a different way to license free vs paid version?

Who do you think we are, looters?

Seriously though, I'd love to see BuildMaster being used at our place - it's a good product - but the lack of decisive power hurts a bit.

As much as there's a chance of me building a spaceship and fucking off really far away from this company.

Frankly, I have a better chance of figuring out the entire space program than they of figuring out proper development practices.

  • How is that shilling for Linux ?

Inedo doesn't have a Linux version, that was the joke.

Actually I'd feel kind of guilty if I could get everything I needed for free. It's a nicely polished product.

We've been promised the money drought will end soon so when that happens it will be high up my list.

The only thing that would be good is a lower tier than 10 devs. We only have one PC dev, me. So maybe something like a 3 dev one or even 1 if it made commercial sense? 2k US is a very hard sell, $200 would be relatively easy (I guess that wouldn't work for you, but you get the idea...)

Edit: I don't know if I'm an edge-case but it's the process that's really appealing to me. Being able to show the auditors that I have a solid, monitored process even for one person would be awesome and save a ton of time. At the moment its paper records and huge string of 'how do you ensure...' for everything.

Just you wait until Otter is released! We've been learning quite a bit from getting ProGet on Linux, and plan to get an Otter shipping in Linux shortly thereafter.

Our main target is organizations with 50+ licenses; so the "$2k to start w/ up to 10 users" is a no-brainer when comparing to our nearest competitors (who starts at 10x the cost).

For small teams like yours, I'd love if you could just use the software, but the problem we think we might run into is, a big company (with potential for 100's of seats) would cripple their own usage of the tool, and just have the "release manager" use the tool. That's why we put the servers/apps limits in, as well.

Anyway, we've got 5.0 coming up, so it'd be an ideal time to revisit it.

We used to have this "pay for the features you need" model, which sounded good (to me at least) on paper, but was confusing as hell to market/position.

That makes perfect sense, thanks for the reply anyway. I'd still like to use it someday, if I can cram it into a future budget I will :)

Free license for Unity engine is granted only to those who make less than $100,000 yearly. Maybe you could go this way? I mean, not necessarily free up to hundred thousand, but maybe some variation on "if you earn less than $X, you pay only $Y".

  • ♿ (Parody)

Hmm, actually I really like that idea; I think revenue is a pretty good proxy on dev team size... Microsoft caps VS Community Edition to $1M in revenue, and it's "honor system" ... which usually companies of that size start to follow.

Disabling some semi-critical features helps being honorable.
