Another Luser WTF

  • I've posted before about one particular customer agency of mine that is full of amazingly stupid people. And remember, I'm talking about the ones they consider their in-house technical people, not the end users. So I'm really not being that harsh. (I don't mind if end users are computer illiterate, just not "computer" people.)

    Last week I had another astoundingly WTFey example that I just have to share. Joebob sent me a logfile from an application and claimed that something was missing at a certain time, so I was perusing the log. Without getting into the technicalities here, I ended up asking him if his PC clock was synchronized with the server. His reply?

    "I don't know what a pc clock is, but my pc's time is correct."

    Sometimes he says things like this that are soooo stupid it makes me question my own sanity. It really wasn't a trick question.

  • Over the weekend, I was playing a [drinking] game with some friends. One one die roll, I had to name a category, then others had to name things in that category.

    @Category said:

    countries

    @Contestant #1 said:

    Asia!

    Contestant #1 drinks

    Later, it was the rhyming game:

    @First word said:

    King

    @Contestant #1 said:

    fli-- er, wait,  Queen!

    Contestant #1 drinks.

    "Oh, Countries! I thought you said Counties." Asia is the one thats a country and a continent, right?

     This reminded me of Rick Mercer's many adventures in the US convincing people that Canada finally got electricity or switched to the decimal system.

    I don't mind the existence of computer illiterate people, I just mind when they get into places they shouldn't.

    I mean, what kind of person hires somebody to run an office when they can't work a word processor or copy files, let alone find their way around a directory structure? Has it gone completely out of style to hire people who are actually capable of doing their jobs?

    Grrr.

    And now YouTube prevents me from doing anything productive for the rest of the day... that guy's awesome.

  • Apparently it has. I've been thinking that my customers have been getting stupider or lazier, but then doubting myself. Surely I'm just getting old and crotchety. But then last week a coworker commented that it's getting harder to get our customers to investigate anything these days. I'm glad it's not just me after all.

  •

    No, Australia is the one that's a country and a continent. Asia is the one that also includes entire islands like Japan. It also China, India, the Koreas, Cambodia, and Canada, which just recently got decimal electricity. (Their prior electricity was octal.)

    Hmmm, maybe you should try Kings, a potentially much more lethal game.... I have a vague recolection of someone once making a rule --- 'Anytime anyone says a noun, they have to take a drink'. Don't remember much of that night tho....

    There is no country named "America"

    Contestant #1 should have though of somewhere like such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq

    Austrilasia and Oceania are generally use to refer to he region, not the country / continent. Both terms tend to refer to areas such as New Zealand, Papua New Guniea, etc.

    Man, that octal->decimal switch was painful, but so worth it. Finally all our calculators could handle 8 and 9's. Octal electricity just couldn't pump in enough amps and watts to handle those digits.

    Put all the abacus repairment out of business, though.

    And that makes contestant #1 a loser, how?

    But to simply one up everyone, the main land is also called New Holland ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Holland_(Australia) ) , and the little island attached to the bottom is Van Dieman's Land ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Diemen's_Land ). Though we don't use them much.

    As for America, its uniformly translated as USA here in Oz.

     That's OK, since global warming is going to threaten all of your igloos, they can all go into refrigeration maintenance.

    New motto: "America: No it isn't!"

    Sounds like a good title for the sequel to "I Am America (And So Can You!)
