Fucking alphabet, how does it work?

I bet they're sorting by "country" and that English is actually "Great Britain" in that list...
Edit: Interesting that this would mean that they have Catalonia listed as a distinct country, which would piss off 80% of the Spaniards...
-
Why is every name in English except for Japanese and Korean?

They're in English. They're just spelled wrong. It just so happens the typo is correct in another language.
-
And Turkish (I assume that's the last one)

Actually it's not, the adjective gender is off (the adjective here goes with neutral gender, while "language" is masculine in Polish).
-
Why is every name in English except for Japanese and Korean?
Because the currently set language is Polish. If you look at the menu on the left, you can guess why I wanted to change it to English.
-
So... Polish doesn't have enough words to make a full language and they have to fill in the gaps with English words?
Just like Japońskie!
-
So... Polish doesn't have enough words to make a full language and they have to fill in the gaps with English words?
No - the translators were just lazy. But I don't mind much - I'm more than used to it.
-
Makes a change from languages that have perfectly good words but people still see a need to replace them with English ones.
-
I bet the English complained that they were right next to the French and Dutch.
And really, who wouldn't.
-
You know what this reminds me of? Applications that refuse to use my system language and look at... whatever, timezone I guess? Combined with whatever else, because timezone is not precise enough.
Yo, dumbass, what is my system language set to? What is my locale set to? EN_US MOTHERFUCKER, DO YOU SPEAK IT?
-
That's actually a pet peeve of mine: Websites with huge-ass dropdowns containing all the countries in the world (or at least those with internet). With their displayed names translated to the user's language. SORTED BY THEIR FUCKING ENGLISH NAMES.
So basically you have to do a full table scan over all the options because even typing the first letter does not predictably jump anywhere near the country you want.
-
Or it could be like the stupid fucking Oracle system that does HR / Financials where I work. It automatically detects that my regional settings are en_GB ("UK English") and then refuses to allow me to login because "the language you have selected is not enabled for this database".
I can manually override the automatic detection by selecting a language from a list of about two dozen languages, but as far as I can tell, the only one that'll allow me to login is "English".
-
Fucking alphabet, how does it work?
Well, it's pretty straight-forward...
You should probably stick to the p's, d's, q's, letters like that. i's don't have a hole and o's don't have a handle.
And steer clear of the x's. Ha ha! Om my god, the x's! Yeah, you don't want those...
-
You've installed an English windows, but your location is set to Netherlands, so we'll stuff you a crappy Dutch translation of our software because we know that's what you really want.
-
Pretty much, but I'm probably getting even crappier translations. I can't imagine them fucking up more than the shit I saw over here. Literally took me 20 minutes to find an option in Audacity.
-
Quite possibly - I mainly prefer English for interface consistency and so that I don't run into a disconnect when the errors aren't translated.
-
I've once saw a simple calculator program where BIN/OCT/DEC/HEX buttons were labeled BIN/PAŹ/GRU/HEX.
Październik means October, and grudzień means December.
At least they haven't translated the last one as "klątwa"...
-
-

Or the first one as "KOSZ".

You know, now I want to make a project named "Hex Editor" that won't be used to edit arbitrary files in hex. I just don't have any idea what it would be for instead.

Well duh, hex management. Once a lot of people piss you off it's hard to keep track who you've cursed and with what.

Spells for witches?

klątwa
KOSZ
I'm getting all these! You've just been using slang until now to sound more exotic, haven't you, you bastards?
Also:
Październik means October, and grudzień means December.
Glad to see we're not the only one who have to endure "customized" month names. Who the frell thought that was a good idea? December being the 12th month of the year is enough of a mindfuck already!
-
So since no alphabet can work, I propose the following - sort the list continually by average mouse speed while each item is passed over, and keep the weightings loosely hashed by IP.
-
December being the 12th month of the year is enough of a mindfuck already!
Poland is western enough for it to be normal.

OK - I'll bite - what's the 12th month over your neck of the woods (and where are these woods)?

I think it was a failed joke about how December is the 12th month but the "Dec" prefix would imply it's actually the 10th month.
-
Aaaaahhhhhh..... OK - I'm a dick.
I need to sign up for more Latin classes...
-
Poland is western enough for it to be normal.
What's the origin of the names there, btw? Over here it's mostly "what you do in the fields at that time of year". I'm sure that won't get obsolete any time soon for majority of population...
OK - I'll bite - what's the 12th month over your neck of the woods (and where are these woods)?
Prosinac. I'm not a linguist but the root would seem to be the word for "beggar". So... I guess that's when you'd see the most beggars around?
Other stuff makes slightly more sense: January is Siječanj, coming from the word for "to cut", so presumably people would go cut wood for heating? A bit late there fellas, but OK.
Also, why the fuck is my location profile field empty? It's Croatia, otherwise known as "moon land".
I think it was a failed joke about how December is the 12th month but the "Dec" prefix would imply it's actually the 10th month.
It's no joke, it's infuriating!
Also, I guess this whole post is pointless now, but I'm bored anyway...

It's no joke, it's infuriating! My coworker proposed a couple weeks ago that we need to change the calendar and make March 1 New Years. Then Oct is the 8th and Dec is the 10th! And then Feb having only 28/29 days make sense - the weird month is the last one where the "rest" of the days are tossed. (He had something about the 30/31 stuff too, but I forget...)

My coworker proposed a couple weeks ago that we need to change the calendar and make March 1 New Years.
Which is close to what it was before! I'm pretty sure it was the spring equinox, March 21st.
Then some bastard pulled January the first out of his ass and fucked the whole system up.
-
All you damn furriners could fix all these ridiculous problems by just becoming American[1].
[1] or Chinese or something. But that would be inconvenient for me, so fuck that idea. Actually, for fairness sake, everyone should become whatever country has the fewest number of speakers in its language, where the language isn't arcane/bizarre, because that shows the least amount of favoritism.
-
Październik means October, and grudzień means December.
Maybe it was a joke, along the lines of "Why can't programmers tell the difference between Halloween and Christmas?"
I mean, it'd be a poor joke, but you could understand the reasoning. Sort of.
-

You'd use it to edit bitmap files with the Minecraft Witchery mod.

Politics. Of course. Figures that that's the explanation.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Or in my case:
You seem to have English Windows with English language, but using your national date and time format, so we'll leave you with this crappily translated interface in your language, where you'll have problems even finding the 'Language selection' option, despite you being a native speaker, because it is so crappily translated.

Languages in such lists should each be in their own language, since you're only going to choose one you speak (and if you don't, you want to be able to easily return to one you do understand).
The Romans themselves fucked up the months (the start of the year was changed to January before Julius Caesar made his reform (making the calendar what it is now, except for the calculation of leap years). Weird fact: any five consecutive months taken between March of one year and January of the next make 153 days.
-
Other stuff makes slightly more sense: January is Siječanj, coming from the word for "to cut", so presumably people would go cut wood for heating? A bit late there fellas, but OK.
No, they would cut woods in January so that they could cultivate crops in fields that resulted.

If you accidentally pick a language you don’t speak, you may have trouble even getting back to the language picker. I made the mistake once of semi-randomly choosing Chinese to demonstrate to someone that my iPod touch had a whole bunch of languages onboard¹ and had a hell of a time finding the right screen to get the UI back to Dutch.¹ This was ca. 2008, before everybody and their pet hamster had a smartphone. Come to think of it, I have a feeling a lot of people even now don’t know they can switch languages on these devices.
