What is Discourse's market exactly?

Continuing the discussion from So... new forums software?:

Care for some, uh, explanation?
It mostly comes down to the fact that sites like TDWTF are not, and likely will never be, a target customer/user of Discourse. That's just how the market/business played out.
Out of curiosity, what do you perceive the target customer/user of Discourse to be?
Discourse's own site describes it as:
Discourse is the 100% open source discussion platform built for the next decade of the Internet. It works as:
a mailing list
a discussion forum
a long-form chat roomWhich seems to fit our needs perfectly. (At least points 1 & 2 are exactly what we were doing with Community Server.)
No; the problem isn't that Discourse isn't meeting our needs, the problem is that Discourse is bad software written by amateurs. I'm sorry, but that's the reality and you should face-up to it.

The one who pays them bags full of money and doesn't complain. Duh.
-
We could all band together to write our own forum software, but considering the arguments about programming that happen here, I don't think that would work too well.
-
If we write the new forum in Ada, everyone will be able to read it, but we'll all have RSI.
-
I already said there somewhere but finding it is hard.
I think Discourse market are support forums.
They need to be "civil"
They usually have short topics (I found Bug X: HELP!)
People who post a lot will probably be able to answer a lot of questions (TL3)
Users can be sorted into groups and be awarded badgesIt's really a hybrid of Jeffs QA-sites and a forum, I think.
Filed Under: Which explains why we as people who use forums like forums are not fit!
-
The target market is obviously people who want a bug tracker but without any bug tracking features.

Technically, if we used Brainfuck, we'd also all be able to read it and get RSI even faster.

wut
EDIT: I probably should have hovered over the abbreviation.

@ben_lubar would probably try to compile it into something even more obscure though, with a runtime of 102 years.

My pupils can read texts on Quantum Physics just fine.

What if we write something in Go?

Does anyone really understand quantum physics?

Does anyone really understand quantum physics?
Some weird Homeopaths think they do :)

I tried to like this but I got a 500 error.

Discourse is all about 500.

Ugh.

And a 1024PB executable.
-
If someone can write Discourse using a subset of Scala with no filesystem or network access (probably as a CGI script), I can determine the exact size of the executable.

Number of characters x diameter of the universe in Plank lengths?

I know the answer!
Discourse is for people that want to try out every new "tech" that comes out.
I say this because a few months after TDWTF switched to Discourse, I was at a conference (non-tech but they use tech stuff and it's an emerging industry, in a sense). I was at a talk about some new tools that this group was using to do their job, one of which seemed to be appearing a lot in the conference was using git to store "source" material. In this talk though, they went off on how they had set up Discourse as their discussion forum and it was so much better than others because they found that it encouraged more discussion on topics and was easy to use (this is for a non-tech audience).
I think I had to hold my breath for a second there to avoid interrupting them with laughter.

If we used Rust, we would probably spend 2 years on development and 20 years on getting the lifetimes right, but at least it would never get server cooties.
-
-
Could use Rust to build libraries, to use as extensions in a higher level language, like Python. boost has an amazing wrapper for Python that works out of the box, I wonder if there is anything like that in Rust.

What? They're right. They just don't know about all the warts.

Since it’s pupils, all that matters is they retain enough information for long enough to pass the exam.
