My posts sort by likes

  • Trolleybus Mechanic

How the futz can I view "my posts, sorted by likes" (ie: find out what my most liked posts are)?

Filed under: I'm going to guess the answer is "ditzforce doesn't do that and jeff doesn't believe you should and gamification and YURE USINg it WRONG!!!"

  • Ditzforce doesn't do that and jeff doesn't believe you should and gamification and YURE USINg it WRONG!!!

  • Is it even worth rubbing the Disco-Devs face in the smattering pile of shit-crap that is Discourse anymore? How many times have "basic""simple" interface changes been retro-fucked into beta because raisans?

"Stablity is for bitches, we live on alpha, MUTHA FUCKA!"

Yes. It should be constant, and every issue should be pointed out. Do not for a minute let them think they've worn you out, or that they've won. Give no quarter.

    Fucking motherfucking fuckers.

ESPECIALLY since Likes are their feature! Likes are stupid, but they're part of Discourse. Why? Because the devs believe liking a post helps the discussion. (Rather than gamifying the discussion and breaking the software, but that's a whole other point).

Okay, fine, let's say likes are an accurate measure of a good discussion. Then I'd like to find out which my most liked posts are. After all, that will give me feedback on what makes for a good discussion, right? That'll help me become a better poster, and contribute more and better to the discussion. I can see when I get likes (though I can't see HOW MANY likes, because I just see a group of 16x16 avatars-- so I need to count them up myself to see how many likes I got in that grouping).

I can see how many likes are on a post by visiting the post itself (though finding out WHO liked it is a chore).

So this information is available-- just not in a USEFUL or ACCESSIBLE manner-- thus negating the entire purpose OF the feature. SO WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK?

  • Working today: Click the "Download My Posts" button on your user profile, import the CSV file into your table management system of choice, and sort by like_count. You can see the content of the post in the post column, or visit the post using the url column.

You're right, I forgot to add to my faux-tag: "... or it'll be some fuck-ass hack like ASK A MOD TO RUN A SELECT... or download a partially implemented dataset and do it yourself every time you want to know"

  • Not partially implemented anymore. Only standing issue with archive of your posts is that it doesn't give you a progress indicator (any indication that it has started) when Sidekiq is gunked up. (When sidekiq isn't gunked up, it finishes pretty fast.)

    This reminds me:

@Sam: When the likes column was remove from the topics page - back before v1.0 - we were told that v1.0, or maybe v1.1, would include a simple method for customizing the columns on that page. Well, here we are approaching v1.5 about a year later, and there's still no sign of that functionality. What's the word?

  • Just started the process to download my posts. Let's see how long this takes.

  • And just finished. Took 11 minutes. The suggested solution for sorting by likes is not exactly timely.

Once I figured out how Discourse was doing line breaks (hint: it involves doing it multiple ways), and massaging the data, I managed to get it imported.

Of my top 12* liked posts (that aren't in the offal likes thread):

2 (and the top 2 at that) are long pleas to Alex not to install Discourse
    5 more are mocking Discourse
1 is actual advice on dealing with a shitty co-worker
1 is making fun of @blakeyrat
1 is a comment to an article
1 is a new topic making fun of MSDN training materials
1 is making fun of the Metro interface.

So 59% of my top 12 most liked posts are bashing Discourse.

By likes, for my top 12 liked posts, 64.35% of the likes are for posts that bash Discourse.

    • there were several ties, so I picked 12.
** somehow, pasting into Dickshore is broken. Copy. CTRL-V Textbox flashes, nothing happens. 0 DAYZ SINCE LAST DISCOURSS BUG!

    Is bash like count
    TRUE 31
    TRUE 29
    TRUE 27
    TRUE 25
    FALSE 20
    TRUE 19
    FALSE 19
    TRUE 19
    FALSE 17
    TRUE 16
    FALSE 16
    FALSE 16

Make that TWO discourse bugs in one post!!! Apparently no one has ever heard of using asterisks to annotate a post.

-1 days since last discourse bug

Did you paste it into a dumb-editor (like Notepad) and then copy it again? Your browser was probably getting confused with the metadata that may have been in the clipboard.

I copied it FROM Discourse. All I wanted to to was move around the order of a couple words. If Discourse is putting metadata shit into the clipboard---- I would not be surprised at all.

Bonus wtf 1: Nope, I just copied the clipboard into Notepad then back again. So Disspiss is fucked in a different way.

Bonus wtf 2: It had no problem pasting from Excel.

Bonus wtf 3: Right click / paste works. So DysenteryShits is probably fucking around with keyboard shortcuts.

Bonus wtf 4: The browser LETS IT fuck around with system-bound keyboard shortcuts.

It's chock full of mouse and (probably) key event handlers that subvert expected behavior.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

To be fair, they probably do help cut down the noise of simple “I agree” posts. These days, I'd probably only do that if @morbiuswilters turned up again.

Pendantic remark: those aren't system-bound shortcuts - they're application-specific, and applications are allowed to do what the fuck they want with keys (except Ctrl+Alt+Delete and several Explorer shortcuts like Alt+Tab, Win+P etc.)

  • I'd like to be able to sort some threads by likes too, like the funny stuff thread, or song of the day thread.

Filed under: stop trying to make "topic" happen, Jeff. It's not going to happen.

  • But there's still no "I disagree" button.

Here's a quick mockup of how it should work:

    That doesn't mean anything.

Stars were also rather unique to Discourse, yet Jeff removed them with extreme prejudice using the eloquent words "fuck them in their little starholes".

And a very nice feature, too.

    The word is bikeshedding
