WTF does this mean?

What the fuck is a Dismiss New? What the fuck is a Dismiss Posts? What the fuck is a tracked topic? For that matter, what defines an 'unread' topic? A topic with unread posts? A topic I've never read? And what separates that from 'new'? Who defines 'too many'? What happens if I don't do what I'm told? Does Discourse melt down and start having cooties? I don't intentionally use any of these features. I obviously didn't read the Discourse User Workflow Guide.

buttons that appear at the bottom of the new and unread tabs
What the fuck is a tracked topic?
it's a topic you are tracking things in. by default thats topics you've posted in or spent "long enough" readingFor that matter, what defines an 'unread' topic? A topic with unread posts?
it's a topic with posts newer than the most recent read post in the threadA topic I've never read?
that would be "new"And what separates that from 'new'?
new topiocs are ones that are "recently" created that you've never enteredWho defines 'too many'?
a site setting. currently set at 500, get more than that total new+unread and the @kuro bar appearsWhat happens if I don't do what I'm told?
not much, but the new/unread views start going weird for youDoes Discourse melt down and start having cooties?
AFAIK no, but they might cause client side cooties just for you.I obviously didn't read the Discourse User Workflow Guide.
there's a user workflow guide?
-
it's a topic with posts newer than the most recent read post in the thread you track
FTFY
@accalia said:new topiocs are ones that are "recently" created that you've never entered
recently means 53 days, afair. There is a setting for that.there's a user workflow guide?
All of meta.d

not much, but the new/unread views start going weird for you
Errrrm what? Why would that happen?
Other web apps don't break just because I don't mark junk read.
This clearly calls for an experiment. Time to track more topics and see what borks.

this is were this comes from.
Filed Under: thats why it's called @Kuro-bar

I am not at 4000, yet... so maybe it'll break more. I will not dismiss things here!
-
FTFY
granted.
recently means 53 days, afair.
i think default is 14 days.... or at least that was what the option saysErrrrm what? Why would that happen?
because discourse is special. ISTR it's something to do with the loading next page of unread thingies.
-
Discourse broke itself. Why are you surprised? It marked things you might be interested in as tracked, then yelled at you for having too many tracked items.
-
i think default is 14 days.... or at least that was what the option says
Thats if you set it to that in your settings. If you say "everything new is new" you have 54 days

@Kuro said:The timeframe for a "New" topic to not be new anymore seems to be 54 days according to my experiment.
Filed Under: 54 days is probably random!

buttons that appear at the bottom of the new and unread tabs
Which is helpful when you have to dismiss 400+ unread topics, with only so many topics loading in the list at a time. And on mobile, at least, those buttons don't show until you are actually at the end of the list.I thought they used to be at the top, but they're not anymore since they dropped the top tab list for a menu.
Does Discourse melt down and start having cooties?
Discourse doesn't seem to need much to start having cooties. Or causing cooties.
-
And on mobile, at least, those buttons don't show until you are actually at the end of the list.
catch 22 that is.
AFAIK its's the same on desktop
-
there's a user workflow guide?
All of meta.d
Isn't that also the entirety of the documentation, as well? Fuck Dicksores.
-
It's a manual, a user workflow guide, the documentation, a bug tracker, a forum(?), a place for wild Jeffs to prosper, etc.
Filed Under: There is not much, meta.d is not!
-
Don't forget Jeff's blog has documentation as well.
Filed under: At least, that makes sense since it is the single source of truth.
-
Waiting for obligatory "dump" of relevant Discosettings......
-
I love how clicking those buttons doesn't make the message go away.
-
AFAIK its's the same on desktop
I think if you have over a certain amount, you get the button at the top too.
-
"too many" is not sufficient quantity for such a button to appear at the top.
-
Odd, I thought it was if there was more than a page or two.
Maybe it's a recent addition as I have the @Kuro-bar on meta.d and I've got a button at the top.
-
For that matter, what defines an 'unread' topic? A topic with unread posts?
This, provided you've read at least one post in the topic. If you've never read anything in it (or have only read them when they were in another topic prior to a Jeffing) then it's a “new” topic.
-
This, provided you've read at least one post in the topic.
And Discourse hasn't randomly set it to Normal or Muted.
-
Of course. Sometimes the jellypotato is too strong…
-
Never underestimate the Jellypotato. Or the shitness of Dischorse.
-
This clearly calls for an experiment. Time to track more topics and see what borks.
Nothing is "expected" to break because of the 500 topic count limit. It's supposed to stop the breaking.
-
AFAIK its's the same on desktop
If the list is long enough, the dismiss new shows at top, too.
-
The limit has been there a lot longer than the @Kuro-bar.
Now the appearance of the @Kuro-bar means the numbers disappear until you're back under the limit.
-
Fuck you. Give me money for that screenshot.
