Ummm, thanks, Discourse?

Note the grey is darker than normal. This is because there were several of these on top of each other, and a couple of resource not permitted errors.

Quit liking so fast! Discourse cannot handle 10s of users at once.

I used to have a local installation of Discourse, but it used up too many system resources even though it was inaccessible from anywhere. Therefore,

Sounds like running an Oracle database locally.

Why would you even want to do that? You must enjoy self-inflicted pain.

I took an Oracle class in college, and we were required to install it to our P3 Celeron laptops with 512 MB RAM. A fresh install of Oracle idled at around 800 MB of RAM used so it swapped like crazy and the system was pretty much unusable for anything.
Before then, I had SQL Server 2005 Express installed. It ate up 12 MB of RAM even when I was using it.

Pretty much this:

IIRC the OTN license only allows it to be used by a single user. That's why I have a local copy on my work laptop.
-

I actually DO do that, because I was using it to develop a simple java utility. On a small windows laptop no less. It uses next to no resources, of course that might have something to do with the 0 queries per hour I am currently throwing at it.
11g express FWIW

I installed a version of 8i (?) on a P2 with 64MB RAM for a course. It was actually usable for what I was doing.

f Discourse... too many system resources...
Fun fact: sometimes when I browse TDWTF on my phone, Discourse is such a resource hog that my MP3 app shuts down. No other site has caused this behaviour.

Music distracts you from the conversation and makes you less likely to participate fully.

I think this was Oracle 10g, somewhere around 2008 - 2009. TRWTF is we were issued Pentium 3 Celeron laptops.
-
That's crazy. My experience was probably about 1999 or so.
-
If I just want to read the forum then I've found that the JavaScript-free version of the site is not too broken and appears to load normally like 99% of all other websites.

It's called Single Player Mode, and is very popular these days.

This happened when I clicked on "view more notifications":

That's almost beautiful, in a way.

Is... is that the Dreamcast logo?

I thought that was blue and the other way up.

Custom spinner CSS, yeah.

...Hmm...

Well shit
-
Custom spinner CSS, yeah.
So when the loading spinner is visible (that is to say, fucking all the time) you can try to hypnotize yourself into thinking this is a better application? Or perhaps Shenmue?
Does it work?
-
Does it work?
It has a calming effect, yeah.
(And it gives me hope that Discourse will also meet its untimely end)

Why the fuck did they think a Sega console could succeed without a headlining Sonic game.
You know, all these decades later, that still boggles the mind.
-
Because it came with built-in internet
and Phantasy Star Online, and Sega paid your dialup bill for a year."Oh, right, you're not in Japan, so FUCK YOU!"
