Likes as currency

It's not like we get paid.
You mean Likes aren't currency?
If they were, I'd be running the place.

would you?
/looks at /t/1k....
those likes don't count!
-
How would you differentiate?
-
simple! subtract the total likes in /t/1k from you r likes and add them to my
walletcount
-
@shadowmod likes does so
-
But if we were using likes as currency, how would you know if I was passing off a T-1000 like, or a like from somewhere else? How would you know?
-
well if we closed /t/1k and put it in the rubbish your likes would go with it. then we'd know.

I don't think the likes go away if you delete a topic. Has there been a test on that?
-
want to give it a try on /t/1k?

I've seen them go away when you delete a post. So at least the likes on the OP should disappear. I doubt they'd go away on an entire topic, though...BRB...
-
Yep. That's what happened.
-
-

The database operations on that would take the forums down for a week.
-
But after that the /t/1000 problems would be solved forever!
Mods, do it, make @codinghorror proud!
-
Yep. That's what happened.
So @Mott555 would lose his likes from the OP, but no one else would be affected? I see no problem here.
What do you think, @RaceProUK?

What do you think, @RaceProUK?
I think many things; I was thinking about the successful change I made to SockBot 2.0, but now I'm thinking about the fact that I'm thirsty.

Clearly, what is needed is a way to separate like likes from regular likes, which are like like likes but more likeable, like.
-
-
That one at the lower right is counterfeit! It's trying to hide that it's a "Llke" instead of a "Like"!
-
-
Well actually, one day when I have time I plan to write a plugin that allows you to buy "emoji reactions" with your likes.
Would be kind of pointless here though :)
-
So we have levels attainable by user actions, now likes as currency-slash-experience-points... Time for a Discourse MMO, I guess?
-
-
Clearly only a plugin and tbh, I am the only one really enthusiastic about this idea for a plugin
-
Would it be possible to create a system with a finite number of likes with a plugin? I.e. you would give one of your likes to the person when you like a post.
-
How would you seed it? Each user gets 1 like for logging in once a day?
@blakeyrat would end up with all the likes because he's a Republican.
-
Special offer, buy 30 likes for $0,99, get another 30 free!
Yeah, I was making a joke up there, but monetizing likes looks like something that would draw more criticism than praise to be honest. Some pretty stats and e-penis boosters like badges - sure, but actually paywalling features (even as trivial, and even if it doesn't involve actual money) doesn't seem to be the way to go for an open discussion platform.
Plus, I estimate 8 to 12 hours before we circumvent that, and that's only because you hail from a different time zone.
-
Do what a bunch of MMOs are doing nowadays - have three currencies:
- a currency that can be earned in-game
- a currency that can be purchased with real money
- real money
Let players convert from the first to the second and vice versa with diminishing returns. Only allow conversion from the third to the second, not the other way around.
-
That is not a bad idea. I, honestly, hadn't put too much thought into. I was thinking you would just start the forum out with a pool of x likes that are granted to the first y founding members that way there is no inflation.
-
Or have people running their computers doing Discourse processing to earn likes, Bitcoin-style.
Then someone is going to design a Discourse-tailored FPGA or ASIC and we might finally get rid of perf problems.

So the "StackOverflow is a forum" master plan becomes a thing. Likes -> Reputation -> Bounties -> Currency.
