Nice train app, terrible news

  • Trenitalia, the biggest Italian train company, had setup a very nice application:

    http://www.viaggiatreno.it/

The WTF, though, are in the news:

I think that this application is too good to be maintained online...

    Help!

  • Sorry, I'm confused. Are the parts that are in italian something like "Oh god we're on fire?" Because aside from the fact that the trains are being delayed, it'd be nice to know that trains ARE being delayed, and having some sort of vague reason WHY.

I think that their software forgot to translate from Italian when there are multiple reasons for the delay: a small WTF.

  • train failure e per grande affluenza viaggiatori

Train failure and ...very rich people? Are they driving on the tracks now, or what?

first:  and great turnout for travellers

    second:  and emergency traveler.

disclaimer:  I don't know Italian.  I used Google Translation.

Not too bad, but I think that Google translation got confused for the fact that Italian legalese usually remove some prepositions...

    So it should be:

first: and a great amount of travellers

second: emergency aid for a traveller.

  • I'm always impressed at a UK train station when they play a pre-recorded message saying something like "The 14:52 to Brighton has been delayed due to a road accident involving a small dog on a rail bridge". It takes some serious forethought to have a message like that available.

  • Anything less than an hour late is pretty typical there.  But maybe that was your point...?<hints id="hah_hints"></hints>

At least Mussolini made the trains run on time.

(Shock horror: I typed "Mussolini", expecting Firefox to red-underline it, and, maybe, give me the correct spelling - And it didn't - I spelt it right the first time! Instead, it is red-underlining "Firefox" WTF.

  • I'm guessing "train failure" is just engine trouble, but I'm surprised they didn't pick a less scary term.

Sweet zombie Jesus, I made it almost all the way to the bottom of this thread without anyone making that Mussolini joke!  I honestly thought that it was going to be in the original post.

  • Clearly the way to reduce the dependency on foreign oil. Institute a fascist government who can make the trains run on thyme.

It also covers the wheels falling off, or occasional cases of spontaneous locomotive combustion.

Two buses in this area broke down not that long ago due to wheels falling off. Another, very recently, did crash through the wall of a rail bridge and showered debris on the line, but I have no idea what happened there. The only train problem I can think of here was a class 319 spontaneously decoupling (don't know if the units broke apart or a coach separated) but one did catch fire in Stevenage recently (a 222 diesel-electric) and they had to stop it and get everyone off.

It must have been funny being in the 319 watching the rest of the train disappear into the distance. Since no-one on board would understand track circuit signalling, they'd not realise that there's (almost) no danger of being hit by the next train, unless of course the driver can't be bothered to stop at red signals.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

SPADs aren't unknown, and indeed have been the reason for a few train crashes in the UK. Yes, this is a WTF.

This one made me laugh, if only because it reminded me just how much harm a non-expert can do when trying to help.

"We'd be on time if it weren't for those ruddy passengers trying to 'help' us!"

  • Trains falling apart? Ha, my friend's train was delayed by a few hours because the tracks somewhere between Łódź and Warsaw have been stolen... I'm not making this up. There were also instances of several kilometres of traction being stolen.

You're sure it was the tracks and not the wiring? Copper has some Americans melting down their pennies (no kidding) and a lot of people are getting weeded out darwin award style for trying to steal live high voltage power lines for the copper. A sculptor recently had some sculptures stolen which ended up being sold to scrap yards (the sculptures were about 100x as valuable as the scrap price in this case, unlike pennies).

As for trains. I had a one hour delay yesterday but didn't let it bother me much. When they powered down the train for a minute I even made everyone (now in the dark) chuckle with my "when in doubt reboot! comment. For all the convenience, cost savings and environmental considerations the occasional delay for me is not so bad. But I do understand it is occasional and if it was daily I might opt for a motorcycle to get to work instead.

I hope nobody thought I was joking.

A freight train hit a lorry this morning, earning it a whole ten seconds on the morning news broadcast.

    Aye.

Trains formed into a ball or zig-zag configuration are still front-page news here. For two days.

I've just bought a house 600m from a train station with the view to use it to get to work (instead of driving)
