    Priceless. Probably won't work if you get hit by an EMP (from a nuke possibly), also if one is running out wouldn't the chance of the head striking the patter be high enough to nuke the backup?

    I wonder if it's even legal to tell employees to try and save equipment in case of an emergency!

    Modern drives are self-parking - if the head control coil isn't energised, then a permanent magnet holds it away from the platters. Any impulse severe enough to move it would also break the casing.

    My cousin uses two of these magnets as closet door handles -- one on either side and it's just stuck.

    It is a great party trick to put them together, give to a random guy and watch as he tries to take them apart.

    I have like 5 of them on my fridge right now.  those wimpy little "decoration" magnets are useless compared to these bad boys. I mean, what if I need to hold up a deck of cards, or a phone book? </sarcasm>
