High quality photo of router

For $30 I can buy the damn thing and take the photo myself!

  • 30$ for a photo that I can easily take myself within minutes? Yep, quite a steep price.

No real WTF here. $30 will get you the router, yes, but it won't buy you the skills to produce a brochure-quality picture of it.

  • That's a 10 mega-pixel image.  You might be able to do an acceptable job with lighting and background on your own, but you might not.  And do you have a 10 mega-pixel camera?

Though I have to believe that anyone who would actually have a need for such a pic would likely need many more such pics, in which case they are likely better off doing it themselves, or at least buying in bulk rather than paying $30@ off a web site.

For a better WTF, look at the pictures below the main item on the page.  It reminds me of the old Sesame Street song, "One of these things is not like the others..."

Dude they are selling the photo... I mean i looked it over... If they are not the WTF is the horribly horrible ambiguity. I am sure that someone will be dumb enough to think otherwise, which is why they have that. Its like the Ebay scams where ppl sold xbox 360 boxes.

Ok? So businesses REALLY like the photo of that router. They can get a discount!

Wow, is it still the 18th century up there in Canada? Do you still put skirts on table legs too?

  • I think this site sells pictures for use in advertising, etc... Notice how NONE of the electronics have any visible brand markings. I think the idea is if you want this funky image in your very high-quality presentation you can get one from them, and w/o a brand, and looks wonderful.

Exactly. If I was in marketing, I'd license images like that. Saves a ton of hassle. Heck, as a developer I do that with icon sets and some photos (for splash screens - our clients like "pretty"), but I use services that are much cheaper than $30 per image.

$30 per image is a bit steep but i guess it is because of the very high-quality. For smaller image it will cost less for them.

The site is just a "marketplace" for artists to sell and buyers to buy "art" for w/e reason. It makes sense i guess.

  • I own a 10Mpx camera and I COULD take one if I had the router. But its not simple and it is not cheap. The camera alone costs a bundle+ lenses+light and never easy to take such pictures. Notice the lack of shadows. The lighting setup required means either serious studio lighting and In this case I'm guessing also a light box or a light tent. These pictures require skill and investment and are sold as stock to people who make adds or indeed brochures.

The best recommendation to the topic starter is to take any object and try to get the picture. I did. Can't say I completely succeeded even with investing some time and money when trying to do it without bought special equipment besides my camera. I got an almost OK result with self made light box, two light sources and an off camera flash. But still almost...

No shit, Sherlock?  I mean, WTF would you expect a site called featurepics.com to be selling?  Toasters?

Well, I would have thought it unlikely that anyone could be so dumb, but I guess you just proved me wrong.  I suppose if you go to a random webpage of a random website, without bothering to find out where you are or what's going on, it might be pretty easy if you also don't read the text and ignore all the sizes in pixels that are quoted right next to the four different prices listed, you might manage to convince yourself that they were selling routers.  You'd have to be spectacularly stupid to not realise the error by the time you'd started attempting to buy one, but I guess you could just pretend you didn't see the other three prices and pretend the text next to them doesn't mean anything and randomly click one without knowing why.

OTOH by that point, you, and your inability to competently operate a perfectly ordinary human brain, would be The Real WTF.

So, the real WTF is the everyday business practices and terminology of the press/photographic agency business?  Or your ignorance of it?

If somebody goes to a website that obviously sells STOCK PHOTOS, and thinks that they are buying an actual router then they deserve everything they get.

  • for only $5 you can get a picture of someone holding their hand up to their head, pretending to talk on a phone

  • Dammit. I thought I was buying a REAL person pretending to talk on the phone. Or at least the torso.

But seriously, there is absolutely no WTF in paying $30 for this (or $7 for the small one to use on a web page), even if there are cheaper alternatives. If your time is worth more than ~$50 an hour, a nice, clean, premade photo is a good deal. Imagine how much it would cost to get a professional photog to do this. This is akin to the Linux fanboys' argument that it's got to be cheaper because it's free. It CAN be cheaper, it CAN be better (I'm OS-agnostic), but in a work environment purchase cost is such a small proportion of the total cost in the long run that it can be almost irrelevant. If I save $100/seat on the OS but my $50/hr employees have to go through just one extra hour of $50/hr training, there's no net benefit. The same applies here.

My ancient 1.3 megapixel Olympus C-830L produced 180-250KB images in maximum resolution. Either there's an error, or the image is insanely compressed.

Do you see the large areas of black? Large areas of solid color compress extremely well, and black compresses even better than most colors. 280KB seems quite reasonable for that image.

I love the photos the chrome one is associated with:

    Guy Shaving in Mirror

    and

    Man Shaving in Mirror

As far as I can tell, the only difference is the tint if the non-mirror part of the image.  The man is a bit more blue, and the guy is a bit more red.

We know that. What Carnildo is saying is that one COULD buy a router for $30 and take a photo of it, but it won't be anything like as good quality. If you want a (good) photo of a router, you buy a photo of a router!

Basically your paying a flat fee instead of royalties.  same way a lot of companies use compulsory mechanical licensing through companies like harry fox for music licenses. Instead of paying 9cents per product produced you pay something like $250 to licenence the use of a song.
