MLB.TV registration

  • Okay so MLB.com is giving a free trial of MLB.TV Premium from July 11-25 for anyone who participated in the final ballot for the All Star Game voting. Convenient, right - I will be able to stream the All Star Game online for free. I'll take it.

    The MLB.TV registration process, however...

Gee, apparently @ isn't a standard character. Who knew. It would've been nice to have the password criteria beforehand, but no... trial and error. Or... I could delve into the murky depths of their Javascript... oh look, what's this first thing I see:

Anyway I search for "standard" and find that they used regexp-based checking (not surprising) and the list of "standard" characters includes letters, numbers, and the symbols ÁáÉéÍíÓóÚúÜüÑñ ._-',()/.

So I generate a new password based on that character set.

It still doesn't like my password. Turns out the maximum password length is 15.

Also, if you actually use any of those special characters, the server-side script barfs and returns you to the same form with an unhelpful "Validation error" message. Oh, and the password fields come back filled in with what you entered, but based on their value properties it fucks up the Unicode for accented letters too.

Plain letters, numbers, and a max length of 15. That would've been really easy if they'd just said it up front. Still :wtf:, because WTF ridiculous password requirements, but easy.

Oh well. At least I get to watch the All Star Game.

  • WTF is a “standard character” supposed to be anyway?

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

Eh, you know. 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8, arranged across your stats as desired for your class specialty. Nothing special.

  • I refuse to give MLB.com any of my money until they fix my paid for, licensed videos I purchased from the 2005 world series. I see 10 years later their site programming is still TRWTF.

  • That's fair, but the nice thing about a free trial is that it doesn't require giving them any money.

And in this case, doesn't even require giving them a credit card number and signing in blood a user agreement with fine print somewhere that says they'll start charging you after the trial ends. Nothing like that. There's literally no catch. Well, unless you count that you'd really need a time machine to get the trial now since the voting is closed.

Excuse me, but do you have express, written consent to reproduce those screenshots, you motherfucking thieving asshole?

  • :belt_onion:

Which one is the bigger WTF?
    [poll]

    • 15 characters
    • No special characters
    • The above combined
    • Server-side check != client side check
    • "Standard characters"
    • This piece of s..$%^ I mean code
      [/poll]

  • Is it bad that I, having never played D&D, recognize a D&D reference?

  • No.

  • I was going to add a joke about pre-made ones from the rulebook, but decided not to.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    Jimmies are definitely rustled.

  • Correction: I don't get to watch the All Star Game. At least I'm pretty sure I don't. It will be blacked out everywhere in the US. Silly me for thinking something called MLB.TV Premium would allow you to watch live streaming baseball games.

I can get live streaming audio of any regular-season game, which counts for something I guess, even though it's just what's already being broadcast on radio for free. And due to the All Star Game there won't be any regular season games this week, so by the time they have another regular season game the free trial will be half over.

    Oh, Major League Baseball.
