Zero Escape 3 announced

  • Hey @blakeyrat If you didn't hear, the third Zero Escape game is officially in production.

For everyone else... if you've never heard of Zero Escape, it is a horror puzzle game series with a strong emphasis on the story. Your player character is participating against their will in something named the Nonary game. It is a game... of death.

The first game in the series is named 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors (or 999) on the DS. It also has a version that removes all of the games puzzles named 999: The Novel on iOS. This is problematic, as the puzzles are usually related to the story in some way.

The thing about 999 is that it's designed so that you have to play through it multiple times to find the real ending. The game has 6 endings, only one of which is the "true" ending.

In the DS version, you have to play through the entire game again to see each ending, although there is a fast forward button to speed through dialog you've already seen.

The iOS version allows you to skip to previously played scenes, a feature it borrowed from 999's sequel.

The second Zero Escape game, for 3DS/Vita, is not a direct sequel, but does take place after the events of the first game. It is a much more ambitious game than the first, with 24 endings instead of 6.

It also features a new system that lets you skip back to scenes you've previously played and make a different decision. Which is a good thing, as even with this feature, the game can take upwards of 40 hours to complete.

The third game is a direct sequel to the second game.

(note: the sound gets desynced at 1:40 in the video)

Aksys may use the Art of Localization panel at Anime Expo on July 4 4pm PDT to talk more about the game.

The story for all the games is based heavily on real science, with a dash of science fiction thrown into it. I'm not sure how much I want to say, as I don't really want to spoil the story of any of the games.

  • What platform?

  • Sadly, they haven't said yet.

  • Hm. I hope it's on something I actually own.

  • I missed the panel today (if they were even live streaming it), but word on the street is that it's been announced for 3DS and Vita... same as Virtue's Last Reward.

  • Ah good, I might have to dust off the Vita.

  • Incidentally, the Zero Escape site was updated with a page for the third game, but it contains nothing but the text "Escaping soon!"

There's supposedly a press release (which lists the systems it is for), but I can't find it on the official Aksys site.

  • @blakeyrat Amazon now has Zero Escape 3 up for Preorder for 3DS and Vita.

(They have buttons on the page to switch between 3DS and Vita, as well as Standard or Limited Bonus Watch editions)

Note: The regular and "Limited Bonus Watch" editions are currently the same price.

  • I saw your Tweet.

I don't buy physical games on Vita, so I'll have to wait until it hits PSN Store.

  • I think Virtue's Last Reward hit PSN on release day. I remember 3DS users being upset because it wasn't on the 3DS eShop at launch (it took like a year for 3DS).

Maybe I'm spoiled by Microsoft consoles, but... duh? Of course it did.

    Yeah well Nintendo are shit.

The limited editions are now "currently unavailable" on Amazon for both systems.

Guess I'm glad you posted that when you did, unlike Blakey I prefer having physical copies, and I got it preordered.

  • Has nobody told them about Zero Punctuation at the Escapist Magazine?

Oh, you're on Nintendo? Yeah, that's different

No. I'm not. Nintendo are shit.

Why would I give money to a company that's shit? That would make ME shit, and I am not shit.
