WorseThanFailure WTF

  • Hi!

I love TheDailyWTF^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^HWorseThanFailure, but for me, this forum software is a big WTF (obviously not designed for browsers != IE):

    a) I can really absolutely not figure out how to enter a paragraph break! I have tried dozens of empty lines, and [p], googling for bbcode references etc. - now I simply hope that you can tell me how to do so; I am embarrassed (and annoyed at the same time) that my text is always rendered as one large blob. :-(

    b) I cannot log in with Konqueror, but I must use Firefox, due to a JS error: "Node : ReferenceError: Can't find variable: __doPostBack"

    c) Similarly, the "Display: Full Articles" link on the front page simply reloads the page, but has no other effect.

    Am I the only one?

    Greetings,
    Hans

  • No idea really.  I have few issues with Firefox on Windows.  When I hit enter, it makes a new <p>.  Sometimes it also inserts a <br />, so I have to delete them.

You know you can edit the html of your post with the [HTML] button on the row above the text, right?

  • Thanks for the hint.

There's no HTML button here; I had tried all available buttons already.

But that helped a lot; I did not know I could use HTML; I expected this [bracket] stuff (not that I have much experience with that). I even read the help pages.

    This works indeed, thanks! :-)

Greetings and sorry for posting a not-so-spectacular WTF,

    Hans

  • Click your user name in the top right corner, check every option for something called editor mode or something like that, switch it to plain-text mode, note: now you must put your own HTML in for everything, you must manually type br tags, and all the jazz. To reiterate the server will not edit what you input at all (save for quote tags).

Heh, and here I was using noscript to block tdwtf's JS to get that. :)

In soviet russia, the line breaks break you!

For me, the option does not "stick". Every day when I come to the site I have to click the link to show full articles again. I don't clear my cookies or anything, so I'm not sure why it keeps reverting.

Ha, I had the same thing annoy me. Even if the software was chosen as some sort of cruel joke, that's no excuse to throw away the values of web accessibility.

  • I have zero zip nada problems in FFX2/Win.

JS is on, CSS is on, Cookies is on.

Hell, it even remembered that I enlarged the textarea for a big post I wrote some time ago.

*cheerfully whistles a tune while dragging the textarea corner back*

    ...

Yeah, I am sure there are many users for which it just works, especially on Win, no doubt. (Probably the developer even tested the site with Mozilla/Win, i.e. not only IE!)

Also, my Konqueror (not even the current version anymore) supports:

    • DOM (Level 1, partially Level 2) based HTML 4.01
    • Cascading Style Sheets (CSS 1, partially CSS 2)
    • ECMA-262 Edition 3 (roughly equals JavaScript 1.5)
    • Secure Java® support [JDK 1.2.0 (Java 2) compatible VM (Blackdown, IBM or Sun)
    • Netscape Communicator® plugins (for viewing Flash®, Real®Audio, Real®Video, etc.)
    • Secure Sockets Layer (TLS/SSL v2/3) for secure communications up to 168bit
    • Bidirectional 16bit unicode support
    • etc.

It's not like we're talking about lynx or mosaic here.

And somehow, I thought that a site mainly concerned with bad software would itself use only good software.

Indeed, I thought the same thing. This forum system's quite bad, you can basically use any HTML you want in your posts

But that helped a lot; I did not know I could use HTML; I expected this [bracket] stuff (not that I have much experience with that). I even read the help pages.

Yeah, most forums use BBCode (the ones with square brackets, eg. [b]).

Sadly, most code on the web is either JScript-only (which Firefox only supports via kludges) or dependant on bugs in Gecko javascript.

And this site's forum software is good. Good enough, anyway, for the vast majority of people who visit here.

There is that minority, though, who can't seem to grasp the idea that the choice of what software to use on the forums here belongs to the person whose forums they are (Alex), and since it's his choice you should save the bitching. Bitch about things on your own site.

  • @KenW said:

By comparison to phpbb, or "crap" by any reasonable measure.

Still absolutely no clue what this site is all about. How amusing. I chuckle at the rage you must experience every time a new story is posted.

And he chose wrong, so we bitch.
