Clown Computing?
-
Continuing the discussion from So... I am no longer blind about performance here ...:
Clown computing!
Yeah, these people are going to be amazed when I introduce them to the concept of a modern bank.
Where is my money stored?
-
Why is this in Sidebar?
-
Side Bar: Because more things make us ask WTF than just code.
I don't know.
Can you point me to the category etiquette doc?
-
-
I don't even know what this is about. A bank? Huh?
-
Point being that they complain about the cloud being a bad place to store data, so I'm guessing they stuff their mattresses with their cash, because banks are not trustworthy either?
Look, I'm not "It's the Cloud!"TM, but at least I'm not against using third party data storage solutions.
-
What point? There's two sentences and none of them have anything to do with the cloud.
Is this one of those telepaths-only topics? Or what's going on here?
-
-
Fixed it.
For some reason the quote got stripped.
-
Yeah it still doesn't make any sense, and now it has Coding Whore's name on it, so. Bye.
-
Yep; still not Sidebar; Jeffed
-
...best I can tell, Xaade is on a rampage against his shoulder aliens, who are feeding him a bunch of crap about the cloud being in some way bad.
-
Xaade is on a rampage against his shoulder aliens
Wouldn't call it a rampage. By now it's a long-term, positional war.
-
I don't know.
Can you point me to the category etiquette doc?
Sidebar provides content for the main site, one of the panels on the left.
Seems some don't think this fits...
-
Sidebar provides content for the main site
Really? I don't see any content, clicking on it does nothing...
-
Did you check the article?
The Archive Scott built, while a worthy initiative, tells people that essentially you can’t trust a third party to store your data, only to create an archive that is stored…. with a third party... [and] seemed to take the view that storing files on one’s own server is far safer than to store with some evil voodoo-doll corporate.

For the longest time this thread was the last one on the page before new ones got loaded, which loading would cause my phone to jump around like a mad man and send me off to some other thread that I would have ended up tapping on. Now that I'm actually in it, it's kind of a disappointment.

Anyway, I figure if there's anything to be alarmist about over cloud computing, it's that Amazon's—as I understand it—basically a monopoly. I was at an aws conference, and all the speakers were crowing about these Gartner quotes that cloud computing is not a commodity “you wouldn't want to put a round peg in a square home now, would you” and that Amazon has more cloud than the next six major competitors “and we pass the savings on to you!” and I got to thinking about how amazon has been running a razor thin profit margin for so long, expanding so rapidly, and what are they going to do when there's no room left to grow?

Hey, if I could play Dwarf Fortress in the clown, I'd do it without a second thought. Clown-based storage is the future. Just think of Google Photos, which allows you to store 16 megapixel images in the Clown for free. Heck, I'd store my passwords in the Clown (encrypted, of course).
The Steam Clown stores all my game configuration and save data and screenshots.
