comic rocket
So I now have an account here; what comics shall I add to never get around to reading?List so far:
- Grrl Power
- Twokinds
- Schlock Mercenary
-
Dunno what's on there, but I enjoy:
- Darths & Droids
- El Goonish Shive
- Something Positive
- SMBC
- Misfile
- PHD Unknown
- Robot Hugs
- Prequel
-
In addition to what's already listed: Homestuck (MSPaint Adventures: Homestuck)
It's now epically long but I've been enjoying it, quite different.
Edit: And VG Cats
-
Questionable Content
8 Bit Theatre (haven't read this one in years but it didn't seem in any danger of stopping)
-
I don't read much of them, but that's what I occasionally do:
- Dilbert
- User Friendly
- Cyanide and Happiness
- xkcd
- Wizard of Id
- Least I Could Do (it's not very good, but eh, maybe you'll like it)
- Garfield
- Square Root of Minus Garfield
- General Protection Fault
- VG Cats
- 8 Bit Theatre
that comic with the steampunk science chick I forgot the name of but everybody here loves itGirl Genius- Order of the Stick
- Achewood
- Dinosaur Comics
...fuck, I could use an account there too.
-
Dunno what all is in their lists as I don't use comic rocket, but some I like that don't look like they've been listed yet:
- Precocious (precociouscomic.com)
- Evil Plan (evilplan.thewebcomic.com/)
- Ginger's Bread (www.gingersbread.com/) -hiatus supposedly ending
- Code Name: Hunter (www.codenamehunter.com/)

- Leftover Soup (leftoversoup.com/)

Note that girls with slingshots has ended and is doing a rerun of things.
-
8-bit theatre ended years ago.
The guy who does QC has a new one, Alice Grove, that's a TTh-update, although it's a little less regular than QC.
-
User Friendly's been dead for years too.
I binged through a couple years of Something Positive and found it entirely too, I dunno, nihilistic or something for my tastes. Also, nobody's mentioned Erfworld yet?
-
User Friendly's been dead for years too.
What's there is still there, and it's worth a read. AIUI, that website tracks your progress through the comic in addition to notifying you of new episodes, so you can still binge it.
-

True, although for some reason I got tired of it before finishing the archive.
Did Illiad just disappear or something? I thought he was taking a hiatus and planning on coming back, but the strips' been in re-runs for what, 5 years now?
-
Note that girls with slingshots has ended and is doing a rerun of things.
As has Irregular Webcomic. Both now have annotations, and GWS is being recoloured.
-
Hmmm... not too into web comics but I seem to recall one called Electric Retard that was particularly illuminating...
...ummmm... sorry...
...and there's the Perry Bible Fellowship which doesn't have a ton of material or frequent updates but is pretty funny.
-
Here are the ones I've got in my rss:
- Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
- Antics which hasn't updated in ages and as of right now the website is empty
- Berkeley Mews
- Channel Ate
- Dinosaur Comics
- Penny Arcade
- Stanley Colors
- Trenches - the comic is total crap, but the stories are sometimes amusing
- Twitter the Comic
- Uptown Ghost - I don't remember this was and their domain is now a spam page
- xkcd
-
Pop Culture Shock Therapy
-
Homestar Runner
Holy shit, it started almost twenty years ago. I feel old.
-
Dr McNinja (biweekly i think?)
Goblins (though it is really sporadic with updates)
-
Okay, soo... I thought I would give comics-rocket a try. I signed up, poked around, and then said "Why, hello, immense webcomics database. Here is an OPML file from my RSS reader. Why don't you take a look and see if you recognize any of these?"
I didn't expect 100% success, but I was a little alarmed by the response (Edited slightly. Nobody needs to know that I follow the Dwarf Fortress blog):
Not found These pages were not found in any comic we know about. You might consider adding them. http://xkcd.com/: Add http://thedailywtf.com/: Add http://www.sorcery101.net: Add http://www.erfworld.com: Add http://www.penny-arcade.com: Add http://www.rsspect.com: Add http://www.crimsondark.com/: Add
It turns out that most of those are in the lists, somewhere, but I can't think of any response which instills less confidence than "Yeah, I know all of the comics on the web, but what's this XKCD thing? Or Penny Arcade? Are they new?"
Oh well. Maybe all the cool kids use https://www.xkcd.com/ instead and I'm just missing out.
-
NSFW:
- quite beautiful drawings, story is a bit disturbing, though
- oh well...Sometimes NSFW:
- if you liked The Last of Us, you'll probably like that one. It's set in Scandinavia / Finland, though.
http://picturesofyou.smackjeeves.com/
http://www.daniellecorsetto.com/gws.html
- that one is definitely beautiful. The end of chapter videos are nicely done, too
- this one is just weird. Has several concluded story lines as well, in addition to the current ones. "Minus" would be my favourite
- be prepared to read a lot of text.SFW:
Concluded comics:
-
http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic+index - be prepared to read a lot of text.
Unsounded is great, but I keep getting lost, the cast is too big for something that updates a page a day. When George RR Martin does it, I can keep several chapters of plot in my working memory, but at a page a day, I keep forgetting who the secondary characters are and wishing Sette would just come back on screen already.
http://thedevilspanties.com/
That's still going?! Maybe I should binge. I still have a signed thong on my wall in my bedroom from when she came to a con I attended.
-
Some others I left off previous list that I don't think have been listed by someone else (also @Rhywden, did you just dump a bookmark folder with some clean up?):
Gunnerkrigg Court http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/
Kiwi Blitz http://www.kiwiblitz.com/
A Girl and Her Fed http://agirlandherfed.com/
Go Get a Roomie http://www.gogetaroomie.com/

Bug Martini http://www.bugmartini.com/
Selkie http://selkiecomic.com/

Not A Villian at http://navcomic.com/ hasn't been mentioned yet.

POKEY THE PENGUIN!!! by THE AUTHORS

-
i recommend... well pretty much any that i pollow, you know where to find them ;-) but in particular these are some you should follow:
http://www.comic-rocket.com/read/el-goonish-shive/1 Hilarious, but very very very weird I think @raceProUK will enjoy it thoroughly
http://www.comic-rocket.com/read/yosh/1 Also very very very weird and awesome. extremely campy at the start but hits it's stride later on and becomes epic
-
-
I strongly recommend Lackadaisy Cats. It's got some of the most impressive artwork I've seen in webcomics.
-
Since this is a topic about webcomics, and somebody mentioned antics already (even though their site is down and it's been gone for a while), I feel the need to post this in light of... certain people.

Reupload by some guy on Reddit:
Part 1
Part 2The first few comics are a bit arkward, now that I look over them again. But the whole thing becomes better. Plus, Jeff!

I feel kinda bad for making this (this is inside the spoiler, Discourse!)[/spoiler]

Spinnerette, six gun mage and run freak run.

Batman, Superman, The Flash and other DC Comics characters as elementary school kids. Used to update daily, but now it's mostly dead (says it's coming back late 2015). There's enough archive to last for a while anyway. Tells the story of aliens who crashed our planet a long time ago and who inspired myths of several cultures, namely of the Olympian gods. Well written and good art. Pokemon comic from the VG Cats guy. Updates infrequently.

Buttersafe used to have these brilliant artistic statements, now it's just lame stick-figure jokes and that dumb saddest turtle character.
Oh God, Moon Junior:
I forgot about this one. Goddamned. GODDAMNED.
I want old Buttersafe back, is basically what I'm saying.
-

The stick figure ones were better than Moon Jr. Though I suppose we should ask if they were ahead of their time in calling a father's daughter "junior" or just got lucky that @blakeyrat found the inconsistency funny instead of infuriating?
-
The stick figure ones were better than Moon Jr.
I could see you considering them funnier, but I wouldn't call them "better". The thing is, the strip used to be about 50/50 artistic Moon Junior-esque comics and stick figure comics, in the last year it's been almost (or actually?) 100% stick figure comics.
Well that's fine if you like those, but that's not why I added it to my RSS.
Though I suppose we should ask if they were ahead of their time in calling a father's daughter "junior" or just got lucky that @blakeyrat found the inconsistency funny instead of infuriating?
What inconsistency? What are you talking about?

-

What's "better" about "Moon Jr.?"
What inconsistency? What are you talking about?
Crazy moon language stuff I guess.
-
What's "better" about "Moon Jr.?"
It goes for an emotional impact deeper than a quick laugh. I appreciate that. It also took a lot more effort/time/talent to write and draw, which I also appreciate.
Crazy moon language stuff I guess.
Do you think the word "junior" can only refer to boys? Is that what you're babbling about? That's all I can come up with.
I honestly have no idea and would like to know.
-
Do you think the word "junior" can only refer to boys?
Does anyone use it otherwise in that context?
It goes for an emotional impact deeper than a quick laugh.
OK.
-
Does anyone use it otherwise in that context?
Huh? Seriously?
Junior just means... junior.
And you think I'm the one talking crazy moon language. Since when has "junior" implied sex/gender in any way?
-
Since when has "junior" implied sex/gender in any way?
Although there are instances of daughters being named after their mothers and also using the suffix "Jr." (such as Anna Eleanor Roosevelt Jr., Winifred Sackville Stoner Jr., and Carolina Herrera Jr.), or after their grandmothers or aunts with the suffix "II", this is not common.
I'd never heard of those examples, and I've never noticed a female instance. It does stand out as odd.
-
I'd never heard of those examples, and I've never noticed a female instance.
The only reason "Junior" is more common on male names is that without it, the son's name would be IDENTICAL to the father's. Like the article says, if the daughter would be named identically to her mother, it also makes sense to use "Junior".
That's the whole point of the word "Junior." You have X people with the same name, so to tell them apart you call the oldest "Senior", then "Junior", then "the Third" and if your family is particularly long-lived you can even hit "Fourth" or more.
But you can't tell the gender of a person by the fact they have a "Junior" in their name, that's never made sense. WTF.
It does stand out as odd.
Only to you.
-
Like the article says, if the daughter would be named identically to her mother, it also makes sense to use "Junior".
Except that practically no one ever does that so every Jr I've ever known was male.
Only to you.
Cite your shit.
-

Oh well I guess your personal experience dictates the behavior of the entire world. Sorry, stupid me for ever doubting that.
Cite your shit.
Do a poll or whatever. I no longer care; I learned the word one (correct!) way and you learned it another way.
But don't give these little "hints" that I'm an idiot without spelling-out why like you did at the start of this conversation, because you might find (if you dig into the matter) that you indeed are the idiot.
