Steam's dumb monster clicking game (was: everything on Steam is broken.) (Everything on Steam is still broken, though.)

#Oh hey Steam summer sale has a little game:
#Let's play it! Could be fun!
#... oh. Well I can join a friend's game?
#Woot, 4 listed. Let's hit the Join button and...
#Fuck you, Steam. Fuck you right up the ass.

In this topic: blakeyrat is upset that a game engineered to break mice is broken.
-
So, not just me. OK.
Also, this random tidbit from the Steam Community (not from Valve staff, so grain of salt and all that):
For not being able to join a game as you can see on the steam client that 1,520 games are being played. Notice this number is not increasing or decreasing. This means that the servers are full.
Also saw this:
Because you can't have a special event tied to a Steam sale without having the event exploitable.
-
Because 1520 server instances should be plenty for for the 8.5M peak / 5M troth users
-

Right; but look at the number of players: it keeps going up!
Which means I'd be able to join a game if any of my friends had an active game under level 10.
The stupid arbitrary rule that you can't join any games over level 10 is the ONLY thing preventing me from playing.
Because 1520 server instances should be plenty for for the 8.5M peak / 5M troth users
The people who run Steam are so fucking incompetent, it does not surprise me they would think that.
#HOWEVER
There's a happy ending. One of my friends either left or got booted, and as a result a new "join a friend" slot came up-- AND IT WAS LEVEL 9!
So now I'm actually in the game. Which is indeed dumb as shit, but I don't care about actually PLAYING it, I just want to collect the cards.
-

You want to attack 1000000000 health monsters with your 10 damage attack? I can see that working out well.

I want to play the game. Even if I spent 99% of the time respawning,
If you are IN the game you get cards.
If you cannot join the game you get shit.

Potential exploit for Summer Monster Game
I always smile at people who find a ways to increase speed of manual mouseclicks instead of getting AutoClick and setting it to click every 1/1000th of second.
-
I have a razer naga.
Back when cookie clicker was new I set it up to click every 1ms.
Having played this game I am confident that clicking does nothing.
I left it in game overnight so my attack now does 5,000 per click, monster health does not go down (or goes down at the same rate) when I click once, or when I click 1000 times a second.
My conclusion: This event is about number of people logged in and "participating" by doing literally nothing, rather than about actual contributions.
My auto cannon does 2k and I have left it running while I'm at work, but this thing seems largely pointless to me.

These cards are The Worst.
At least the cards I collect have associated abilities that I can combine in interesting ways to crush people.
End of Turn cast deceiver exarch tapping your only source of blue mana
Untap, Upkeep, Draw, cast Splinter Twin on my deceiver exarch.
Tap deceiver exarch, create new deceiver exarch, untapping first deceiver exarch.
Repeat 999 more times to create a total of 1000 copies of deceiver exarch.
Attack you for 1000 damage gg

If you cannot join the game you get shit.
So... same result either way?
-
we are playing legacy right?
pfft, I entered this tournament with a modern deck, if you're telling me it's legacy then I need to start with:
turn 1 probe, underground sea cabal therapy for the best card in your hand.
turn 2 volcanic island, dark ritual dark ritual cabal ritual ad nauseam draw half my deck dark ritual duress cabal therapy cabal ritual lion's eye diamond x 2 tendrils of agony GG game 2?
-
-
I could go off turn 1, but I'm not playing belcher so I'd rather play safe!
-
In all seriousness though, I have played a LOT of legacy (it's my preferred format) turn 1-2 kills happen at most 10% of the time. Players of combo decks will have higher averages obv but assuming you are playing a "fair" deck those sorts of losses are a lot rarer than you think.
I play combo in legacy and I normally end up going off turn 3 or later unless I get a sick hand and my opponent gets a bad one.

-
I'd ask what the holy fuck you're talking about but then I realize: I don't really care.
But go away.

5M
trothtrough usersI was going to deliberately misunderstand it, but I went to the dictionary definition of 'troth' and turns out that although the only usage of it anyone in this day and age knows is as in betrothed, it does in fact mean pledged faith and loyalty in general, which almost makes sense in the context as 5M dedicated, loyal users who are always on.

End of Turn cast deceiver exarch tapping your only source of blue mana
Doesn't have Split Second so I can still counterspell it.Otherwise, I really enjoy your work and would like to subscribe to your newsletter. Please continue ITT.
-
True, but the important thing is you cant counterspell my splinter twin the following turn.
Basically, if I lose the exarch I still have the twin in hand, and the 2 pestermites I have mean I am more likely to draw the exarch half than the splinter twin half. Once I expose the first half of my combo, I want to protect the second half as much as possible.
realistically, I will be more likely to tap white or red mana down to protect against path to exile and rending volley, but that's getting into way too many specifics for this thread about video games
-
interestingly enough, its even MORE broken now day 1 has finished. It's counting up on the time remaining to meet todays milestones, kicked everyone out of their games at least twice, and cleared the milestone progress out completely.
GG steam.
-
AHA
Today they removed the level 10 limit, it just let me join a level 29 game.
Such a fucking trivial fix and now the dumb game works fine.
-
No they didn't.
The limit still exists, you can't join a game that's 10 levels higher than the highest level you've completed. If you hit at least level 19 last time you played, that's why it let you join.
Since I didn't manage to join last night, I'm still level 0, and I can't join any games.
-
The limit still exists, you can't join a game that's 10 levels higher than the highest level you've completed.
Oh it means completed ever, not completed today.
Well that's stupid.
ince I didn't manage to join last night, I'm still level 0, and I can't join any games.
And every day it'll get worse and worse. Valve's really fucked you over.
-
Valve's really fucked you over
Either by luck or by them actually increasing the number of games, I'm in a game now.
-
All the captions on the Steam monster game are suddenly in Spanish. For some reason.
-
-
One time, someone added me as a friend on Steam and told me that they had found my account by being logged into it on the Dota 2 website.
-
Oh it means completed ever, not completed today.
Well that's stupid.
It's because you get bonus items if you played the previous day based on the number of bosses killed in the game you were on.
I know I started with 10 badge points, which means I could buy 5 Treasure bonuses, so even though my stats reset ('cause they're per game and games reset every day of the sale), I essentially started out with 500k gold.
Edit: My game yesterday I don't think even reached level 60. My game today is currently on level 164, so I expect to get considerably more badge points tomorrow.
-
What's up with people getting excited about this game? I mean, it makes Cookie Clicker look like a thrilling adventure. At least you get consistent feedback there, the Steam thingy lags like crap.
-
The exciting part is that it feels like we're doing something big, even though what we're actually doing is making 9 indie games slightly cheaper for the next day and getting a chance at up to 3 $0.14 virtual trading cards.
-
Ok so I'm in a game with approximately 1500 players, and it's level 547, I've been in it since 9:30ish AM, and I don't have a single trading card.
So... I don't get it.
Yesterday I got 2 trading cards within a minute of joining the game.
-
The "exciting" part
FTFY. I don't find it exciting, per se, but just am contributing and angling for the cards.
what we're actually doing is making 9 indie games slightly cheaper
Most likely indie games. All the games unlocked today look it (at a glance) but yesterday had Crysis 2 and a few other not so "indie" games.
a chance at up to 3 $0.14 virtual trading cards
And a very slim chance that those virtual trading cards will be the foil ones, which makes their value so much higher says the person that still has 2 foil cards for Dead State that aren't selling and have $0.10 buy orders...
-
9:30ish AM,
Considering you're on the west coast, that would be about 30 minutes before the servers reset. You sure about that?
-
It's actually after.
At 9am Pacific time each day, all game sessions in the Monster Summer Game will end.
It also says you can only get 3 cards per 24 hour period, but I've only got 2 myself and I got them both within the first half hour of being in, and my timer is currently at 7 hours 25 minutes.
-
They must end an hour before the next ones begin, then. I'm sure it wasn't working until noon today, and I'm in central time.
-
According to their FAQ, the new games start "immediately" after the previous ones end.
Whether that's actually the case is anyone's guess.
it wasn't working until noon today, and I'm in central time.
I couldn't get in a game until 1:30pm Central, so I wouldn't know for sure. But considering it's the second day, might still be kinks in the system.
-
They reset at 9:00. Used to be 10:00 a couple months ago, not sure why they moved it forward.
-
Accounting for DST?
I did get caught on that, thought it was 8PM here. Makes little difference anyway, unless you're hunting 12h deals, then a bad timezone like mine can screw you over.
-
I haven't gotten one today either... I'm beginning to think that's bugged, as it says up to 3 per 24-hour period.
-
Ok so final count, yesterday I hit something like level 640 in the dumb game, received ZERO cards.
Today I joined a new game, and by level 20, I have 2 card drops.
Something's definitely wrong.
-
Yup, same happened to me. I got two card drops as soon as I joined a game today.
Also, my game today is already up to level 500... I wonder how high we'll get today.
-
Same here. Also, it took all day yesterday for my game to hit level 680. Today, we passed that level at around 1 hour 45 minutes in.
I need to check and see where it's at now.Currently at 910 at 2 hours 45 minutes in.
-
Mine's only 313, I feel like a losssser
-
I looked this morning and I thought it said you were in a game that had passed level 1000. If the FAQ is right, you should be able to join any friend's game that's still below that level.
