GOS Doesn't Like Me

  • I was playing around with the new gOS linux distribution.  I got an unexpected error message when the Google search widget crashed.  Needless to say, I decided not to save the error message for later.

    Google Search Widget Error Message

Then, I looked at the desktop...

    gOS Dekstop

I looked a little closer and... I don't think gOS likes me!

    gOS doesn't like me

  • I find the REAL WTF in the abstract of the gOS page:

We recommend Google for just about everything... Gmail, Gtalk, Calendar, Maps, Docs and Spreadsheets, and more. We'd like to welcome you to the idea that Google already is your "operating system."

So... let me get this straight: People are despising Microsoft as the great monopolistic information octopus - and then happily entrust themselfes to Google in all entirety?

    Very consequent indeed...

Hell yeah, Google knows more about me than the government..... assuming the government doesn't spy on me *unplugs computer and puts tinfoil hat on*

The main difference (in this case) between Google and M$FT is that Microsoft charges and Google is free.

  • Ok i haven't read anything yet, so this is purely on assumptions .

But that ugly green thing, is basically a modified ubuntu (and thus debian but that's besides the point) configured with lots of mac like stuff, and lots of google love.
So basically it's the googleOS before google released it?

I think these guys will be quite disappointed to find out that in ~2 weeks no body will know or care about them.  (like a gazillion other distro's you never heard about again)

Now please don't understand this as me saying small distros shouldn't exists, i mean its great. I would even go as far as to hint to some sort of evolution system, where small differences get made and only the best traits survive. But i just don't see the reason why this one should get all this attention. At least archlinux has the kewlest package manager name ever (pacman)

  • And my discussion about funny screenshots devolves into a flame war...  :(

  • I personally think TRWTF is taking a picture of the screen...

To be fair, he's using a pretty dodgy OS. Maybe he couldn't find a way to take a screen capture.

  • The PC I was using was so old and had so much unsupported hardware that it crashed within minutes.

The irony of it all is that Google isn't even the best at everything they do (who is?)  I switched from Google search to Yahoo search about two months ago and haven't looked back.  Yahoo's results are always more relevant because Google weights result popularity based on the website as a whole, whereas Yahoo weights it more by the specific page.  As a result, searches for a term that appears in the Wikipedia always show up #1 in Google, even when the page sucks, but Yahoo will gladly return some obscure website on the subject over the Wikipedia's entry.

Plus, the new Yahoo Mail Beta is orders of magnitude more advanced than Gmail.

Disclaimer: I don't work for Yahoo, I just USE them.

That's interesting. I found the Yahoo Mail beta to just plain suck.

Not to mention it has been in beta as long as I can remember.

With nothing but weird issues and slow performance, I ended up switching back to their 'classic' interface. Big improvement. Of all the bug resports I have submitted, seen, and researched, I have never seen anything get better.

Just my two cents... I have never used GMail, but it has to be better than the buggy Yahoo Mail Beta...

Sounds a bit like GMail/Google Mail/Whatever They're Calling It This Week, in that respect.

    Uhm.

Linux user? Commands not using console are for wimps?

  • Uhm... Since the OP didn't post a real screenshot, one might suppose that PrintScreen didn't work as expected. And since Linux usually relies on X for GUIness, it'd be reasonable to try to use xwd.

But indeed, only wimps use those GUIs, anyway. 8=]

  • For as far as i know, print screen works pretty well since ~2000ish, at least since gnome 2.0. Before that people mostly used import from imagemagick or screenshot utility of the gimp. Although i can't say about other WM's and DE's because i don't really use anything besides gnome.

and to be anal, hitting the prt scr button on my keyboard isn't exactly GUI related :)

  • Here's a slight WTF- The gOS website has an FTP download, but it asks for a username and password and then whines about not letting more than 20 users do anything. Not exactly an "alternate OS for the masses" yet.

To be fair, gOS is available on a PC at Walmart, so I doubt it'll go away that quickly.

You can use 'import -window root filename.jpg' to take a dump of the entire screen.

The Prt Scr button works in KDE just as well. (no surprise)

    I might bugreport that someday for gnome-screenshot :) (together with a bad-fax filter )

saves you the trouble of having to do it manually.

Sorry for resurrecting an old post, but I've realized what happened.  Half of the YouTube icon got cut off, along with anything that would be to the right of it.  Nothing Earth shattering.  I'm sure you all realized that already.

The great part is that you see a non-photographed version of this image if you go to gOS's wikipedia page.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOS_(Linux_distribution).

    It's not a bug, it's a feature.
