Installing Linux and programs on surplus computers for those in need.
Guy donates a Linux desktop to a poor immigrant family.
So, the following Monday I delivered a lovely Core2Duo desktop computer system with Linux Mint 17.1 XFCE installed. This computer was recently surplussed from the public library where I work. Installed on the computer was:
- LibreOffice, for writing and documenting
- Klavaro, a touch-typing tutor
- TuxPaint, a painting program for kids
- Scratch, to learn computer programming
- TeamViewer, so I can volunteer to remotely support this computer
I just find it amusing that TeamViewer is a mandatory part of a noob Linux installation. So that, when it inevitably breaks, an expert can come in and fix it.

Excuse me? My standard install of a Windows box for anyone includes:
- LibreOffice
- Chrome
- TeamViewer
Fail to see why the guy using that on Linux is amusing. Most people will break their computer whether it is Windows or Linux.

i find it interesting that teamviewer for linux (at least through version 9, not sure about 10 but i doubt it's changed) runs a sandboxed instance of WINE to run the windoes teamviewer application.

It's the noob part that's critical here. If we lived in @blakeyrat's fevered fantasy world, he would have just given them his phone number and yelled "RTFM N000b!" into the phone whenever their number came up on caller ID.

But it's funny when it happens on Linux.
Seriously, PC marked will keep sliding down until this is resolved. Ordinary people can use ipads, chromebooks and whatnots without help.

I think it's a matter of expectations. There are more clear expectations of what those devices can be used for, because they are more limited. When it comes to PCs, they can do "anything" (regardless of OS).
So you have people with nebulous goals, who get frustrated at a machine that doesn't help them focus those goals (as opposed to an iPad, where if you want to watch videos, you open the "videos" app, you don't open the browser to navigate to YouTube).
Also, because they are more flexible, they offer more options for fiddling with things. People who don't know what those knobs do grow frustrated at them.
PCs are great if you know exactly what you want to do, and how to do it. They're less awesome when someone just sits you in front of one and you aren't sure what you want or how to get it.

And he thinks he's not familiar with Linux. That sure sounds like a Linux expert.

Yup. That's pretty funny, installing that by default.
From context and other posts, it seems more like TV is a Windows application is the funny part.

Maybe he wants them to hate computers. I say that as someone who likes using the CLI for pretty much everything.
