Or at least be able to recognize it as an HTML entity, and not feel that finding one in a spam email is worthy of sharing with the world.

But if I had a problem, I would have posted to the Coding Question forum. This was just WTF, a rather lame one at that. But thanks anyway, my email program is fine, it is the idiot that programmed the email message that needs troubleshooting help.

IMO deleting accounts is for spammers and trolls (by a very narrow definition) only. For other misbehaving posters, deleting the offending posts is enough "punishment".

I'm guessing the most interesting point will be if the ampersand of the html entity of tunnelrats spam email was "&" or "&", also interesting to know is if he viewed the mail in text mode or HTML more, lot's of times email sending programs just strip all html from a email and present it as the text version. (leaving html entities untouched, but of course also not parsed by the client in text modus)

Though in most circumstances it converts ASCII quotes to the proper curly quotes, any ASCII apostrophe or quotation mark following a digit is converted to prime or double prime, because WordPress blindly assumes that if it's a quotation mark following a number, it must stand for feet or inches.
If I recall, WordPerfect does something similar too (or at least it did in version 8, the last version I used), though I can't remember if it used the prime symbol or just straight quotes.

If they used MS Word to create the HTML for their email then it could have put in the fancy double quotes. I think the feature is called "smart quotes" (in MS Word, the quotes around that would be slanted inwards on each side).

perhaps you should have also read some of the posts. Then you might have guessed that there are actually separate characters for that, and the're not called double prime.If it's true what codeman38 says, then i guess that's probably what happened.

Word inserts actual quotes, as in “ and ”, but not primes -- as far as I know.

Slightly off topic, but I've noticed that a lot of Linux related help pages (Perl expecially) use two apostrophes on one side and a quotation mark on the other. Anybody know why?

Poor man's ``curly quotes", the opening being `backquotes'. They should stop doing it, it's fugly. There's no need in printed text to have different opening and closing "quotes".

That is a very long and complex story. See http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/ucs/quotes.html for some relevant information. (I'll note that while he says it's X fonts that did this, so did many console fonts)
