  • So, I carry a pager on a rotating basis with other devs. I had it this past week. This is a simple text pager.

I get a page yesterday from tier 2 support:

"System X is inaccessible and I am receiving an error when attempting to access it. See attached screenshot"

And no, the page is not a CC of an email. It's a page only. And they know that.

It WOULDA been kinda cool if i got an ASCII art screenshot tho.

  • Do you guys use any issue tracking software such as SeaPine TestTrack. A lot of times, our QA will write "see attached screenshot " on the issue summary and you have to click that tab to download it.  I just didnt' know if the paging system was automated to send critical issues or something like that, straight from another program.

  • nope. this was an email from outlook right to the pager (ispager@Initech.com). an email with an image attached. :-)

Then clearly your pager is not standards-compliant.

Then clearly your pager is not standards-compliant.

Specifically, it fails to comply with BS5400 (bridge construction), IEC61400 (wind turbines), RFC2328 (OSPF), and ITU-T X.400 (email), at the very least.

  • Then it's not THAT much of a WTF, tier 2 just forgot he was emailing a pager (likely easily done even at a high level). Did the system not warn them - if so, that's The Real WTF.

Or if he'd phoned up the pager company and dictated the message, THEN it would be a WTF.
