Walmart.com: "Please upgrade Windows"

  • Apparently Windows XP x64 isn't sophisticated enough for their crappy website:

We're sorry, your operating system is incompatible. To provide the best download experience, we can no longer support Windows 98, ME or NT. Please visit again after you upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP. Visit our Help section for complete system requirements information.

    Opera 9.50a b9594

  • Yeah I get exactly the same error on Ubuntu, and I'd wager it's the same on OS X. How is it that such a big corporation allows itself to do shit like this.

    1) They're missing out on a huge audience.

    2) User-agent is easy to fake.

    It's reminiscent of 1996.

  • 3) they employ developers / copywriters that don't actually know the difference between OS and interweb-browser.

  • Same on XP/Firefox. Oh yeah that's right, everybody uses IE anyway, why bother supporting the others...

    9.50a? Isn't 9.23 the current version?

The "a" means "Alpha"... He's running the alpha release of Opera 9.50

  • Yes. You can actually find the latest weekly alpha build on the Opera Desktop Team Blog. Just scroll to the bottom of the post for the download links for Win/Linux/Mac.

  • Best part is that it's a struts action, not an asp page. I bet the got bribed into using IIS and blocking anything non-ms.

  • "We notice you're not using Internet Explorer. Other browsers may be able to access our original Music Downloads store which has fewer user features than our latest version but offers the same music. We will be making enhancements to our updated version in the future to support the Firefox browser. If you want to take advantage of all the features in our updated design now, please get the latest version of Internet Explorer"

    WTF

  • If you think that's bad, check this out:

"Can I use Firefox to browse and purchase songs/ videos from Ripit Music Store?
Yes. If you are using Mozilla Firefox, please click here to view the step by step guide on how to enable Firefox to use the Ripit Music Store."

'click here' leads you to this: http://www.ripitdownloads.com/dms/FireFox_ripitNZ.asp

"Browsing the Ripit Digital Music Downloads website using Firefox

You can now browse Ripit Digital Music Downloads (www.ripit.co.nz) website using the Mozilla Firefox web browser.

Mozilla Firefox allows you to download and install add-ons, known as "Extensions". Before you start browsing Ripit Digital Music Downloads website using Firefox, you would need to download, install and configure the "IE Tab" extension by following these simple instructions.

Step 1. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1419/ to install the "IE Tab" extension.

    Click on "Install Now".

  • Same on Camino/Mac OS X.

    WTF

No, that's the sane and sensible thing to do. They've developed a new system. It only works on IE.

They roll it out now rather than wait until the firefox support is complete. RIGHT decision, most of their userbase is on IE.

They keep the old system around because not everyone's on IE. RIGHT decision obviously.

They let the user know about this. RIGHT decision because you can't rely on the user-agent string, and someone with IE but not using it may think 'OK, switch to IE'.

The OP's report is a WTF, this is not. Unless you were using IE.

Why not just throw a warning message up at the top, such as "Your browser may not be supported.  Click here for more information" type of thing.  Don't just outright disallow them because you don't wanna support it.

Plus the error was using XP 64-bit, which has the same NT Version # as Windows 2003.  So if you logged on that site with a win2k3 system, you should get the same error.  That's a double-WTF anyway...

  • Ah, ignorance is bliss. When I first joined my current ISP I called them up to get the details of their DNS server, etc. Ten minutes into explaining to the girl on the phone that, no, I cannot use the CD they supplied me with because it won't run on my operating system she came out with the classic line of: "Lee..nucks? No, you will have to upgrade to Windows 95 or better to use our service."

     Somehow I'm still with them...
