That's a bit strange... be interesting to see the source for that RSS parser!
-
Can't find the source, but it would appear that the news is all pre-generated. On the main page, a static file (http://www.php.net/source.php?url=/include/pregen-news.inc) is used to build the news listing.
And then, it would appear from the checkin comments on index.php that they are generated the RSS feed by parsing the index page.
Certainly an unusual way of doing things.

but consistent with PHP's overall design as a language

I believe that's called a "load bearing comment".

do you have any idea how hard it is for them to keep it so consistently inconsistent? :)

Oh, I don't doubt that it takes a lot of work, feeding those 10,000 monkeys.

Comment containing data that needs to be parsed is also quite popular

Comment containing data that needs to be parsed is also quite popularjwz is using a format for a purpose other than that for which it was designed, and relying on data that's not part of the format to be present because he needs it. Note that the information that's ACTUALLY used for what CDDB is for (taking a disc and finding out the artist/track names etc) is not commented. If you're using it for what it's designed for, you have the track lengths because you have the physical disk, and you needed them to calculate the ID to get the file in the first place anyway.
The genre thing, though, is screwed up, if it's as described.

It's a wonder anything works at all.
Because we useres often re-set the genre in our rippers when we rip the cd after getting the tracklisting off of cddb. :)
