Speaking of "gender inputs"...

  •

I wonder what would happen if I entered "pancake"...

  • Hopefully a validation error.

  • I wonder why you can't choose strategy (RTS / TBS).

  • The title is also pretty funny:
    2. Part One

  • What makes it especially funny is that "Country" is a combo-box. I guess the conversation between developers went something like:

"Um, Jim, don't you think one of those fields needs to be changed to a combo-box, since it's a discrete value set?"

"Oh, yeah, I guess. I'll change it when I get a chance...."

Particularly since using a combo box for "Country" is always a sack full of flesh-eating maggots. Either you include Tibet (and piss off China) or you leave it out (and piss off Tibet). The list of the world's countries is heavily disputed.

Afghanistan's borders are well-defined and agreed upon, as far as I know. India/Pakistan/China do have issues, though.

Spain is listed after about three hundred Caribbean islands called Saint Something, which is why I usually opt for the first entry in the list rather than typing S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S...

Don't know what browser are you using, but did you try typing "spain" when in dropdown? My FF handles it just fine, but also supports pressing "s" multiple times.

  • In the Isle of Man, we have an additional problem. While most people ignore us and lump us in with the United Kingdom (we are literally placed between England and Northern Ireland geographically) - that's fine. Not politically or technically correct, but fine. We've more or less got used to it.

But then there are some sites that DO list us, and most IoM residents just go for United Kingdom anyway. Resulting in quite poor data. We're also very suspicious of sites that separate us out fromt he UK, because they often have the mistaken impression it is more expensive to ship things to us when in fact it is largely the same price.

This is an ongoing argument for any new web site developed on the island.

I tried typing that once and it just thought I was a snake.

I don't disagree with your criticism, but the wording suggests a better
option. If one exists, I haven't stumbled upon it. Do you have one, or
is this just a case of the best option still not being a good option.

That's easy, detect current country, if it's China remove Tibet from the list.

  • I don't know what this is a survey for, but it looks like you're required to play games. If you don't play games on the PC at all, and try to leave all those boxes unchecked does it complain that you haven't answered question 3? Pancakes can't play games!

On occasion when someone refers to plugs or sockets as the male or female end, I make off-color references to which one of them ejaculates its signal and leaves and which one of them carries the connect-ack to term for nine kilowatt-months and can't find the male end of the plug and has to drop out of school and moonlight as a wire stripper just to make ends meet...

Well, I was invited to take the survey because I registered a Saitek product, and their products are generally aimed towards gamers...

As for the title, I never intended any kind of innuendo,,,

How about letting the user type in the name of their country? The only downside is potentially noisy data if the user misspells the name of their country. But you could deal with it. If the name they give isn't in your list, use a string-distance algorithm like Levenshtein to find the most likely candidates and present the user with a choice: "Did you mean LICHTENSTEIN?" Or some such. If they insist on using an incorrect spelling, you should probably go with it. Country names and borders change, and you don't want to exclude customers just because you aren't up to date on world politics.

If there are physical goods to be delivered to the customer, transportation costs, customs etc. depend on the part of the earth the parcel is going to. But you probably want to tell the customer how much the total costs of his orders will be. You can't do that if the customer insists that his country is called Carynthia and you have no idea where to look for it.

I don't have a solution. This is a very real problem for people who have to do business in that part of the world. "Never get involved in a land war in Asia" applies, because there's a definite possibility that this one is going to end that way. Unfortunately, when the disagreements are so fundamental and go on for so long, it is very difficult to avoid.

Politics has once again managed to confound even the simplest of questions.

It's sometimes not that easy being in the UK either. 90% of the time the only option is United Kingdom, but occasionally that doesn't appear on the list. Then you have to go through all of the permutations working out where you live. Britain, Great Britain, or England.

Sometimes you don't get United Kingdom at the top. Instead, it ends up underneath United Arab Emerits, adding to the confusion of locating it even more, since I don't know what I expect it to be called. I kinda prefer to do it on a Symbian S60, they do a simple SQL 'Like' filter on drop down menus, makes things a lot faster.
