There can be only one.

  • I saw someone on an IRC channel complaining about HShield (a piece of anti-cheating software used by various games) and turned up this interesting FAQ. More specifically, take a look at questions 3 and 16:

    3. I am getting "Program Closed due to Hacking tools" or Audition just closes with no error message.
If you are hacking - SHAME ON YOU YOU DESERVE IT. Otherwise, check programs you have running in the background. Audition attaches to all open processes to determine if you are running any 3rd party programs that would interfere with Audition. If HSHield senses that something is trying to attach itself to the Audition or make changes to its memory space, it will close with this error. Some programs that are known to cause this: Anti-Virus Software, Anti-Spyware, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Hacking software (tsk tsk tsk), spyware, computer virus.

    16. A sharing violation occurred while accessing C:\Program Files\Nexon\Audition\HSHIELD\EGRNAPX2.dll. How do I get around this?
This happens because when you open Audition, HShield attaches itself to every process on your machine for hack checking. It stays attached to all processes until Audition is closed. The best way to get rid of this error is to restart your machine. If Audition isn't closed properly, this error tends to pop up. And you can't do anything about it until you restart.

It's a good thing more software doesn't use this combination of techniques...

  • I don't think anything that comes from Nexon can surprise me anymore. That company produces such a vast number of WTFs on the outside alone, that I don't want to know how it looks on the inside...

  • So basically if anything acts the same as HShield and is not HShield, it will be caught by HShield as hacking program, because it will analyze "protected" process? Brillant!

I guess, I know what library will future adware / backdoor use... FAQ: You get "Program Closed due to Hacking tools"? Just turn off your A-V.

  • Ahh, first level tech support, how I love thee.

I recently had the "pleasure" of talking to 2K Games tech support since I was not allowed to install Bioshock since it apparently had been installed more then twice (No one would possibly want to install a game on their Laptop, home computer AND their work computer, would they?). One of their support panaceas was to enter msconfig and disable ALL services (bye bye anti-virus and software firewalls) and then to go to Startup and then disable everything in there too. After that they told me that I should never enable things in there if I wanted to play the game...

The little fact that several pieces of hardware drivers (Creative Audigy etc.) depends on some of those services which means that this little "advice" would almost always cause more problems than it cured was denied by the tech support. The support guy told me that this procedure is commonly used by hackers to increase their FPS and to reduce lag...

It´s times like that I wish it would be
possible to sue a company for giving out incompetent advices.

  • It is here in Sweden, if the company is a bank.

Why would AOL Instant Messenger be attaching itself to another process space?

My bet would be that they actively blacklisted it, on the basis that using an out-of-game communication tool is "cheating" and the only out-of-game communication tool that anybody uses is AIM.

  • Isn't the official AIM client shipped with spyware/adware?

    s/the official AIM client/anything AOL produces/

Yay! Now I can become a professional digital criminal and techno-warrior of the internet just by disabling my anti-virus and anti-spywares!

Heh, I remember when they announced the beta of Shattered Galaxy, the bragged that they game was perfectly balanced thanks to extensive use of game theory and advanced math, so they'd never have to nerf anything. Within a month or two of the beta launch, they had to majorly nerf bombers, of course.

It attaches itself to all running processes on the system to watch for keyboard and mouse activity so it can update your "idle" status. It's one of many reasons I won't touch the official client.

    oookay...

Did they ever hear about this thing called "screen saver"?

Yes...god forbid I be able to enjoyably play your game!
