Sexism in IT

  • My college runs a mailing list where we can often find job listings. Today we got a message saying there was an opening for a position as an intern.

The thing is, one of the pre-requisites for getting this job is being a woman.

Some investigation later, I found out that the IT manager of the company who sent the message is a woman who refuses to work having any male in her staff.

Not being enough that so few women work with IT here, there are even companies who are now hogging all of them now...

  • I think such job openings would be considered illegal in several countries.

  • Did the job listing use the phrase "seeks relationship"?

  • Report it.

    This is bullshit.

I know offhand that there's a mandatory fine for them here in the UK.

  • Put on a wig, and sneak in a videocamera, because this sounds like one of those summer comedies in the making.

Seconded. If your country has laws against it, report this nonsense.  If not ,then do what the other guy said and dress up like a woman.  Sell the rights to a film producer and you'll make millions.. then give us some for suggesting it to you in the first place :-)

  • Since you're in Brazil, I'm going to guess the women-only company is in Brazil. Does Brazil even have sexual equality or "equal opportunity" laws?

I don't know much about the culture, having never been there, but the things I've heard and the handful of people I've met lead me to believe there's considerably more divisiveness between the sexes than there is in the US, Canada, Australia or most European countries.

Slightly related: I once saw an opening for a game programmer at a company based in Saudi Arabia. The job listing stated that the applicant must send a photo. The listing's wording hinted that only men need apply.

No, I've been to US and from all I've experienced it's the same when it comes to gender equality. This is just a case of a female IT manager who refuses to work with men.

OK, I'd like to report that anyone applying for the job of "little head polisher" must be female.

Otherwise you'll get a kick in the nuts.
