Windows Brings Itself to a New Level

  • Welcome all, I'm new to here, and I joined so I could actually submit a screen shot of something that happened.

Windows XP Home SP2 just spat out at me that it couldn't find nothing. Think about this for a second.

    Here's the SS: http://i40.tinypic.com/24wej4i.jpg

Worse Than Failure? I think so.

If you mean your post, then I agree 100%.

I thought about it, and realized...its not a WTF!  This has to be the weakest submission I've ever seen here.  Especially with the obligatory "OMG WINDOZE FAIL!!!1" message to go along with it.

The dialog is clearly generic, saying "can't find X", and when X is nothing, as you have typed here, its considered (null).  What would you rather it say?  "can't find (no text you retard)"?

  • Yeah, it's fun to make those dialogs say amusing things by typing in phrases for filenames.

  •  I do think it's a WTF. It should either say "please enter text to search for!" or disable the submit button.

An every-day user couldn't figure out what this messagebox is all about.

  •  windows is so backward compaired to linux.

I mean i just installed Vista and i can't even find a link to start  Web 2.0 , it just has the old web i guess

Maybe it is solved with Service Pack 3. That or you would have to reinstall your PC. Always does the trick for me

sometimes i unplug everything for 24 hours and then plug it in - that usually works.

Sometimes computer glitches are caused by a static buildup on your hard-drive caused by the changing electrostatic field generated by e.g. a plastic ruler on your desk - the same thing that makes bits of paper stick to it when you rub the ruler up and down your arm...

You know how you get paper off a ruler by hitting it on a table lots of times? Well do that with your PC. Say 20 times - lift it about a foot off the desk &

    drop it.

While strictly speaking, you're right, a simple null in a dialog doesn't arouse much cheering around these parts.

QFT.  A WTF is something that makes you say "WTF?"  A simple null in a dialog doesn't make me say "WTF,"  it just makes me think "oh, a bug."  Honestly, if we posted every bug in every piece of software we used in the sidebar we would destroy the servers hosting the forum.

It's probably not even a bug. You can cause this dialog by entering '(null)' in the Run... prompt.

  •  Oh the hours of fun that can be had!

I find it slightly ironic that the bugs in Community Server are actually slowly destroying the servers hosting the forum.

Oh my, but remember to take the user's name; when the BOFH gave that advice he forgot that and almost got killed!

I thought you could solve this bug with the power surge method, you know, flipping on/off the PSU until the problem corrects itself?

It does disable the "OK" button on the run box. This message came up because the OP typed "(null)" in the Open textbox, and clicked OK.

It's neither a WTF, nor funny. And it sure aint clever.

My coworker used to use this method to turn on his old PC - it was somewhat flaky, and would only turn on if you lifted it about 10cm, dropped it, and then push the power button.

This was my first thought, but there's a glitch - usually the text is also in the window title. So either he typed "(null)", mspainted the title bar, and then posted the result, or he bypassed the "disable OK button" function of the run box.

Trying to reproduce that, I used the browse button to find a file. I tried to open a directory which he wouldn't let me, then some random file and realized it put between quotation marks because it contained spaces. I then tried to run "" (two quotation marks with nothing in-between).

    It opened my user folder.
