In Which @Sloosecannon Rants About Title Case and @blakeyrat objects to mods
-
I cannot stand People Who Type In Title Text All The Time.
This makes me want to cluebat them in the face with an English textbook. It makes my brain stumble when trying to read the freaking text. For crying out loud, at least WHEN YOU TYPE IN ALL CAPS THE TEXT STILL FLOWS IN YOUR HEAD WHEN YOU READ IT!
</rant>

There are some people who regularly capitalize random words in the middle of sentences. Random as in completely random, there's no set rule to their spelling. It's funny because you'll see a bunch of normal spelling and Then a capitalized word out of the blue.
I used to work with a guy like that and it was pretty annoying. I still see his posts on Facebook and he is still doing it.
-
You'll really hate the Germans then
-
You know, if it's a non-native speaker I tend to give them a pass. It still irks me but I don't get pissed.
What does piss me off is when a guy who I know is a native born American posts something like this
I Know You Guys Said You Would't Include The CSO Class Super Carrier In The Mod But I Think It's A Really Neat Ship And You Should Totally Include It Especially Because You Said You Would Add The Mantle's Approach And It's Even Bigger So I Don't Understand Why You Won't Include The Super Carrier
That's like nails on a chalkboard to my eyes. It makes me want to smash someone in the face with the nearest heavy object I can find.
Mod is Sins of the Prophets btw, ships are Halo ships we're modding in...
-
I went ahead and fixed the case in the title for you ;)
-
At some point on the mod's homepage, you might want to mention WHAT GAME IT'S A FREAKIN' MOD OF!
-
Those annoy the crap out of me too. When I WTF in the middle of reading your sentence, you're Doing It Wrong(tm)
-
There are 3 mods/games. Each one should say what game it's a mod for.
Sins of a Solar Empire, Homeworld 2 and Star Wars Empire at War are the games. SOTP is the Sins mod
EDIT: Homefront doesn't. We should probably fix that...
-

The person you quote is a programmer and had to use verbose variable names for a long time. So I took the liberty of VTFY.
You'll really hate the Germans then
Because there are clearly no rules on what to capitalize in German. I find the English capitalization rules to be at least as confusing.

See, variable names are one thing (although if you've got a variable name that big, you've got other problems). Since there aren't any spaces,
camelCasingThingsAllowsPeopleToSeeWhereWordsEndAndBegin
. But when you're talking in plain put spaces between words English, there's no excuse.
-
Because there are clearly no rules on what to capitalize in German.
I never said that. It's just that the every Noun is capitalized, is it not?

My guess is Halo.
SOTP is the Sins mod
Wow, that's confusing.

It's no fun when they're obviously asking for it.
-
Oh they should put that in a smaller, less noticeable font. OH WAIT THERE IS NO SUCH THING.
Also BY NO MEANS should they put critical information about the mod above-the-fold! That's just ridiculous.
-
wtf cASE iT iS tHEN...
-
My guess is Halo.
Wow, that's confusing.
Well, Halo has been removed from the title because Microsoft Game Content Usage Rules, so now it's just Sins of the Prophets. Makes it slightly less ambiguous. Plus in the Sins of a Solar Empire modding community, it's a "thing" to name your mod using "sins" somewhere in the name...
-
It's just that the every Noun is capitalized, is it not?
Every noun and the beginning of sentences, obviously. The only thing you kinda need to look out for are verbs or adjectives that become a noun in the sentence. Like "eating food" Would be "Essen des Essens" (I love how that sentence is completely stupid, showcases that the word "Essen" ist used in multiple instances (including the name of a city) and is somehow the first thing that came to my mind...)
ymmv
definitly!

We can't. Because ModDB.[pre-emptive]
We use moddb because free hosting for >1gb files and publicity.
-
So you're saying ModDB doesn't let you customize ANY of the content there above-the-fold? Even your Microsoft license disclaimer thing?
-
Well, that's the copyright notice field, where you put things like copyrights.
Granted that profile thing should be higher. I might talk to our contact and see if he can't move it up there somehow. Thank you for the (somewhat abusive) feedback. (this is not sarcasm.)
The mod's site https://www.sinsoftheprophets.com/ that we just recently launched actually says what it is immediately. So that's better.
EDIT and what the hell unicode, seriously? Apparently I need to tweak something server side because the (c) thing is serving wrong. F**k

The middle one doesn't. Unless it's a mod for Homefront:
which seems unlikely.
Now I can move on to bitching how you're just recycling some huge corporation's assets into another huge corporation's products. Build something original, damnit.
-
The middle one doesn't. Unless it's a mod for Homefront:
Yeah, mentioned that upthread. I'm not in charge of that mod, but I'll probably add that in to their description too.
@blakeyrat said:Now I can move on to bitching how you're just recycling some huge corporation's assets into another huge corporation's products. Build something original, damnit.
Technically, we're not. We are making all the models and textures from scratch. The universe ideas, sure, but not the assets.
-
Technically, we're not. We are making all the models and textures from scratch.
No you're not.
"From scratch" would have included the design, and you obviously didn't do that. All you're doing is making a copy of something someone else already made. Fuck that noise.
The universe ideas, sure, but not the assets.
Nothing here is original.
-
False. Some of the designs are from the Halo games. Others are actually created by our team members. In their entirety.
Regardless, I don't really see why you're hating on the originality. Cross-platform mods aren't exactly a new thing and I personally find it extemely fun to do space battles with Halo ships. And that's the point of gaming.

"Hey guyz, we have this huge digital canvas, free game engines, we can do whatever we want! What should we do?"
"LEAST CREATIVE PROJECT POSSIBLE!"
"Okay!"
Or maybe we're not re-inventing the square wheel and using a game engine that already works instead of building a [blakeyrat]shitty half-assed open source project[/blakeyrat]?
-
The game engine part isn't the part I'm objecting to.
I'm saying if you're going to make something new, make something new. Don't just rehash old stuff in a slightly different combination.
-
Why? Why do you care? I like my mod. You clearly don't. Oh well.
-
I don't like to see talent wasted.
I like having lots of new things in the world.
-
I'm saying if you're going to make something new, make something new. Don't just rehash old stuff in a slightly different combination.
Almost everything you use day to day is a rehash of an older idea.
-
I gotta agree with the principle of blakey's argument. Way too many mods are "recreate intellectual property X in game engine Y". Take LittleBigPlanet for example: the community had this wonderful game engine with almost infinite possibilities, and the first thing they did with it was recreate Super Mario Brothers 1-1. About 1000 times.
-
But the point of this project was to do exactly that - a halo mod for a space strategy game, which did not exist either in an official or unofficial capacity beforehand. In fact very little of what we're doing here had been expanded on outside of one or two Halo books.
But whatever, think what you want. I like the mod and want to make it as enjoyable and professional as possible. If you and Blakey think I'm wasting my time, oh well.
I do honestly appreciate Blakey's feedback, rude as it may have been. I'll try to improve what I can about the site from it.
-
Because there are clearly no rules on what to capitalize in German.
It's mostly Nouns, in German, isn't it? I remember my Teacher saying to always capitalize Nouns in German, when I was at School...
