Hum, okay. I realize now that this is in fact the status screen of a real virus scanner and not one of the usual "your computer is in serious trouble" banners on the web. My bad... *backs off slowly*

  • Yeah, AVG is real and free.  Unfortunately I stopped using it because they stopped making the Free Edition easy to find on their site (and I'm not sure my mom's AVG's automatic update even works).  I use Avast! on windows, now.

  • AV products are all adware...completely pitiful.

Of course, Quicken is adware now too...damn it people.

Autoupdate works. And the free version always is at http://free.grisoft.com/ still the first google hit for "free avg"

  • I'm still trying to understand what in the content of this thread made Google Ads come up with these:

    Sex Offender Registry
    Search updated sex offender list
    Protect your child
    NationalAlertRegistry.com

    Registered Sex Offenders
Find Out if Any Sex Offenders Live in
    Your Area. Check OurRegistry.
    RegionHunt.com

    Sex Offenders Near You?
    Check Your Neighborhood and School
    District. Protect Your Children!
    www.peoplefinders.com

(Follow-up: those ads were replaced by ordinary IT-related ads when I reloaded. Must have been a fluke.)

At least it wasn't something like "Buy Sex Offenders Now on ebay"

  • Google ads can be...interesting.  Once when I was reading an e-mail from my Gmail account that had the word "cat" in it, it came up with "Cat Diarrhea" in the right-hand ads.  I really, really don't want to know where that link would've led...

When you use a theme with window borders made of clear glass, whatever's behind them will show through in screenshots.
