Cruz for Prez?????

Sen. Ted Cruz announces presidential bid, vows to 'stand for liberty'

To differentiate him from all those candidates who stand for oppression. Apparently.

Amy Kremer, the former head of the Tea Party Express, told the Associated Press Sunday that the Republican pool of candidates "will take a quantum leap forward" with Cruz's announcement, adding that it "will excite the base in a way we haven't seen in years."

I like to think that Amy Kremer isn't aware that a "quantum leap" is literally the smallest movement measurable, and she secretly has zero confidence in Cruz.

But I'm pretty sure she's just an idiot.

In December, Cruz defied party leaders to force a vote on opposing Obama's executive actions on immigration. The strategy failed, and led several of his Republican colleagues to call Cruz out. "You should have an end goal in sight if you're going to do these types of things and I don't see an end goal other than irritating a lot of people," Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch said at the time.

This is a quote from a prominent politician in his party.

"He's awfully good at making promises that he knows the GOP can't keep and pushing for unachievable goals, but he seems very popular with right wing," added veteran Republican strategist John Feehery.

Note: this also is a quote from a strategist in his party. Even Republicans don't like Ted Cruz.

I'm skipping the "whar birth certificate whaaar?" bullshit because it was lame when people did it to Obama and it's lame when they do it to Ted Cruz.

Cruz is one of those politicians that has mastered the art of saying lots of words while never saying anything of substance.

Nobody seems to get that. Ditto for "exponential growth".

I'm sure you can find people in any party who don't like some prominent person in the party.

All that said, I like Ted Cruz a lot, but I hope we've learned our lesson about pushing first term Senators into the White House.

What's his opinion on military invasion of Cuba?

I don't know, but he's no comsymp like @blakeyrat, and he is a bit of a hawk. I'm sure he realizes like all sane people that the world would be better off without the Castro regime, but I haven't heard what he has to say about it specifically.

I hope Cruz sticks around in the Senate for a long time. We need a lot more like him.

Right; where else would we get material for our current events comedy shows?

To be bipartisan, we also need a lot more Biden.

This can be stated more concisely without losing any meaning:

    Cruz is a politician.

Now that guy is funny. I'm not sure a new pol could get away with all the rapey stuff he gets away with, though. I mean, even Clinton did had to do his best work behind closed doors.

One of my friends is a local Republican politician. When I first got to know him, I asked his opinion on gay marriage and he said that he supported it but to do so here would currently be political suicide in the Republican party. When I asked him how he answered the question if/when it was proposed to him he told me he answers it with, "The bible defines marriage as being between one man and one woman." In doing so, he was not lying, but just not telling the entire truth and that people here ate up that answer. As a further point, he would define himself as weakly agnostic. He has no real opinion or strong feelings about religion, but definitely does not consider himself a Christian or anything else.

After he told me that, I started listening more closely to politicians for when they give answers that are not answers and tell lies that are not lies. They are everywhere.

Most of us don't know shit about the politics of Kerzblekistan, or we would try to involve you more.

  • Well, this pretty much guarantees he will lose the nomination - by officially announcing, he can no longer directly fund raise or coordinate with the PACs that will support him in the primary/general election. The whole point of running a *wink wink* *nudge nudge* campaign is to directly raise as much dark money as possible. Once you declare your candidacy, you lose the ability to do that fundraising. What a noob.

On second thought, it's more like a game of The Price is Right - whoever can promise the most dumb shit without going over the limit of the public's believability* wins.

    *virtually non-existent

But but, maybe this woman thinks that a 'quantum' is something significant and/or cool, like out of that TV show from the 80's. Maybe this woman thinks Scott Bakula should run for President.

We have a few other religions to go through on our presidents before we go batshit crazy enough to elect a Scientologist. ;)

  • Nobody seems to get that.

Because it's not true... a quantum leap is just the change of value of a discrete quantity. Metaphorically, it is an abrupt change (as opposed to a continuous one).

@blakeyrat was right in spirit. Quantum Leap does not mean a large leap, the phrase is largely meaningless.

  • They were quite large sometimes, I mean he usually seemed to end up in the US, but he could jump to any time period. I liked the way they used to set up the next episode at the end of each episode so you 'd have to tune in again next week (no internet in those days because we all wore onions on our belts as that was the fashion at the time). Al was always fun too...

  • Not really, even in the restricted sense of physics. Turn a light on. Suddenly, you have an enormous field. Shut the light off. You discretely make the field disappear. A quantum leap, on a possibly cosmic scale.

As @Captain brought up, I've always interpreted it not necessarily as a large leap, but as a discontinuity.

But more importantly, I'm sure he doesn't expect to win the nomination. No non-incumbent Republican has done that since Eisenhower, and I don't remember Cruz leading the armies of the free world against the fascist meanace in Europe (though I'm sure he'd be game). And Ford is a weaselly exception since he never won an election for President and was an asterisk of an incumbent.

But it is fun to watch him live rent free in so many confused people's heads.

  • @boomzilla said:

What? Someone has to win the Republican nomination... What do you mean by incumbent?

  • Ted Cruz said that he wanted to demolish the IRS and then have a flat tax. Which will be collected by some kind of service that handles internal revenue.

Either way, the Republican primary is going to be quite busy.
