Every company has a guy like this...

  • This may come off a little "CPound-ish", but I have an observation I would like to share.

And I think it holds true for every company that has an IT department.

Every company has one of these guys. You know the type. Bearded, slightly unkempt in appearance, been with the company 15+ years, and is the de facto IT "guru" for the company. He could be a programmer, but most likely he is a network/PC guy with some programming skills. Everyone will attest that this guy is smart. Not brilliant, mind you. Just that he knows his stuff. And especially the company's stuff.

He's the guy everyone goes to for "approval" and advice on how to add a particular component to the network. He is also somewhat difficult to get a hold of, since there are so many demands on him from various users. When you see him walking by, he'll usually have a piece of hardware under his arm. Like an ergonomic keyboard, or some patch cables.

Management never questions his actions or his whereabouts since this guy has been with the company longer than most managers.

This guy has an odd sense of humor too. He might make some sort of side joke, and then laugh at himself saying "Ain't that a swift kick in the patootie!"

Chances are, this guy is not married. He spends an unknown amount of hours at the job. When he goes home, no one knows. He always seems to be lurking around in the background somewhere.

But one thing is for certain. He is a permanent fixture of the company and should never EVER be questioned in any capacity. He knows what he is doing and the entire company would fold without his sheer presence.

Tell me I'm not lying! Every company has one of these guys!!!

Uh, not quite my style...but you bring up a good point. The company I currently work for has a guy like this. I've always wondered how much money this guy makes, since he's been with the company forever. I would feel really bad for him if he made only 50k a year and had devoted his life to the company's well-being. In any case, a little part of me is slightly envious of the guy. He has a certain knowledge and power that is almost...untouchable. I prefer programming however.

  • Heh, I kinda fell into that position after being with a company for a few months. I guess that's the advantage to working for a startup.

I left there a few months ago, and they still ask me questions about how things work. I don't mind, though, it makes me feel special. :)

We have a person like that, in a meta-way. His properties are distributed across various people.

CPoundish in terms of blanket statements, perhaps. ;)

noooo, it's because the 'newguy' IS CPound...

or may CPound is the 'newguy', or..... something.

I thought someone would say that, so I thought about it in advance. I can't be that guy because I've only been working here for a year. Moreover, I'm not a hardware guy and I don't have incredible knowledge of the business systems. So there!

The primary qualification, I believe, is the beard.

    Do you have one?
