Pop-ups collection

  • Hello folks.

I decided to share my little pop-up collection, which either did not make it to front page, or simply cannot be put there, because it's in my native language (Polish). Anyway, I hope that you find these funny:

    1. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s124/Hobson/Popups/asslot.png
found in my coworker's code. Was pretty fun at the moment of finding. I think still is.

    2. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s124/Hobson/Popups/cs.png
I think that uninstaller wanted to ask me something, but unfortunately I did not know the answer.

    3. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s124/Hobson/Popups/eclipseversion.png
I still do not know for which version i should download plugins.

    4. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s124/Hobson/Popups/magic.png
make sure to chant proper spells when encypting!

    5. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s124/Hobson/Popups/MSKLM.png
entry for Microsoft Keyboard Layout Manager in Add/Remove Programs applet

    6. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s124/Hobson/Popups/postgres.png
dialog displayed by PGAdmin when backing up a database. Buttons at the bottom read: 'Help', 'Nothing', and 'Cancel'. Funny thing about this one is that when dialog shows up, encircled button has 'OK' caption, just like it should be. But when backup procedure ends, it changes to 'Nothing'

    7. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s124/Hobson/Popups/netbeans_error.jpg
    no comment

    8. http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s124/Hobson/Popups/czy.png
Polish message, so most of you might not fint it funny. I try to translate:
    Caption: Overwrite confirmation.
Message: 'File "/blabla/foo/bar/someth[end of path invisible]" is read-only, hidden or system. Are' (as in "Are you hungry?" Or like 'do' in "Do you like tomatos?" Word "Czy" cannot be translated to English, and in Polish it indicates beginning of the question).
Buttons are labelled: Yes, Yes to all, No, Cancel.

I hope you like these. Any of them can be put on front page by anyone powerful enough.

    Cheers

  • To save myself a headache, hotlinking the images:

  • Making the addresses as actual links would be nice.

    1. I just don't understand why people want to abbreviate "Association" as "Ass" all of the time. At one of my previous jobs, clients that has "Association" in their names tended to be abbreviated with "Ass." I had to explain to everyone that they better use "Assoc." because the name does appear on printouts that are mailed to the client.
    2. I see that all the time when an ANSI app is trying to display Unicode text. Windows 98 is great for that. Question marks everywhere.
    3. I never noticed that. Of course mine doesn't start with the Welcome screen. But, the splash shows 3.2 as does About. I tend to trust the About dialog's numbers over the others.
    4. shrug
    5. Amazing that someone didn't notice that in QA.
    6. I don't even know why someone would include that.
    7. No text is bad enough, but no buttons, too?
    8. Explanations in the middle of your interpretation makes that unreadable. I don't even know what it's supposed to say.

I can see why these aren't on the front. They are just oddities, but nothing that really made my brain say "WTF" to myself.

Links can now be easily followed...

  • Forgive me format of the post, for some reason all buttons in posting form are disabled in my browser (Opera 9.2). Next time I will try with IE.

And forgive me my English, as you can probably see, I am not native English speaker.

I am glad that noone said something like: The real WTF is [insert some insult directed at me]'. But I feel it coming :)

    Have a nice day, folks!

Ahh, I was just about to bitch about it. Not only are the images not inline in the OP, they're not even linked to!

Still, there are some funny ones in here. I can see why the didn't make the FP.

    8. Explanations in the middle of your interpretation makes that unreadable. I don't even know what it's supposed to say.

What he was saying (it was hard to follow) is that the dialog has some [useless?] information, followed by a word that clearly indicates they are about to ask a question, but the question itself is chopped off because the dialog is too small. So the WTF is that it's pretty much impossible to guess what "Yes" means and what "No" means since you cant see the entire question...if it was "Continue" and "Stop" then you might able to guess what button to click based on the part of the message that is visible.

Still, given that there is a cancel button, its not a huge deal.

It makes more sense if you add Spanish punctuation:  'File "/blabla/foo/bar/someth[end of path invisible]" is read-only, hidden or system. ¿Do'

I think this exact problem (confirmation dialog with the question cut off by height) was in a recent Error'd in english.

I hope you were joking. I know Alex's new WTFey software fails to auto-link URLs (hence the amount of comments with unclickable addresses in), but I don't know about Community Server. I run the latter in basic hand-coded HTML mode so I have complete control over my posts: I'm not familiar with all the failings of the software. If any of my posts go wrong, it's entirely my fault for bad HTML. Mostly. There are still gnarly edges, and the BBCode quote tag wrapped around HTML is taking the piss. It should be <blockquote> with (IIRC) the cite attribute used to specify the user. (Not that cite defaults to being visible but you could parse it out and display it, or do something horrible with blockquote[cite]:before { content: attr(cite) ":"; font-weight: bold } (and IE users can suck up to it).

It would be interesting to know what the queue length is for error'd submissions. I know I sent in one of my all-time favourites ages ago and it's never been used. For me it's a conflict as I have my own site that gets first pickings on all my stuff ;-) I also like the freedom to write whatever I like, and not have people mangle all my explanatory text. Plus, I can post whenever I want, including long multi-image narratives and not have all my precious screenshots lost in some silent, uninspectable submissions queue and never have them see the light of .... nigh I guess. I'd have to make sidebar posts, but then, my site wins out. (It long predates my learning of this site.) Besides, I have no comments system on my site so I don't have to put up with people like Jim Bob ;)

I just recently installed noscript and started editing my WTF posts by hand. It's actually pretty amusing to type the html myself, since I can hide stuff in HTML comments. I can secretly give my opinion on the poster and nobody knows except for me! .. and anybody that quotes me :)

  • 1 and 4 are my favorite

By the way,  magic is also the reason why I know your key store password is (or was) admin123

  • The "magic" bit basically means "This file doesn't look like a keyring to me". As in "incorrect magic number", which basically means "incorrect file header signature".

People have known for decades that messages that speak about "magic numbers" are confusing and funny for most people, yet they keep them in their programs. Go figure. =)
