[Likely Downtime coming] Trying to do a backup/restore to new server
-
FYI - we're finally migrating to a new server, and will be running @ben_lubar's CS import script. It will take, by our estimate, 17 hours.
The site may be even more interfrastic than normal between now and the time this finishes.

...is it back? It seems to be back...
-
Also, would have been nice to have had a bit of notice before you started!
-
Will these posts carry over though?

We'll find out within 24 hours…

At least I had some fun during the downtime:
(feel free to use this @yamikuronue ;))
Recently, while browsing one of my favorite forums, it was suddenly kicked into read-only mode. It seemed rather odd since the forum went down in the middle of one of the busiest times of day.
Ever a glutton for punishment, I continued browsing some of the newer posts, even though I’d have to go through and “read” them again so that the posts would disappear from my unread panel. About half an hour after the read-only mode started, I came across a new topic from the boss-man of the forum:
[Downtime Inevitable] Backup\Restore to new server pending
Ok, no big deal. Wait a second, when was this posted? 35 minutes ago? Only 5 minutes before the downtime started‽
It got worse. Reading through the OP on this “warning” topic, the BMotF indicated that estimates indicated that the downtime would last for 17 hours. 5 minute notice for a 17 hour downtime‽‽
-
Based on the fact that things are back now I think the 17 hours is estimated import time, not downtime.
-
That's my (hopeful) thinking too
-
I'm... pretty sure that there isn't an incremental update utility available. So if that was the backup the import runs on, this stuff is goin' away
-
Yeah, the downtime said "a short while"
Still, there's a reason people do these things at 1am... >.>
-
Oh shit, can we get confirmation? I may need to back up some posts if so...
-
Actually, @ben_lubar what was your import like so we have something to guess off of?
-
I'm... pretty sure that there isn't an incremental update utility available. So if that was the backup the import runs on, this stuff is goin' away
Possibly, but if it is just inserts into tables (or updates on some values) then it could be run on the live version and use the backup if said insert/updates belgium something.
And it appears to have gone back to read only while I was typing (and posts disappeared).
-
Read only seems to be off and the notice changed ... so I guess progress has been made.
NOTICE - the old forums are being imported, so the site may be a bit slow

Given the additional read-only time after your post, I respecfully disagree.

Caffeine. It's a hell of a drug. ;-P
-
Samsung Corporation was behind this, wasn't they?
-
On the plus side, it gave me a genuinely good reason to file a
bug reportUX feature request on meta.d.https://meta.discourse.org/t/read-only-banner-should-float/26315?u=dkf
Does that count as good news?
-
well it's news. we'll see if it's good when a discodev posts in it.
-
All I've got so far are Likes…
-
what? is my comment chopped liver?
-
chopped liver
We feed that to the cat. Except she prefers to do the chopping herself with her teeth.
