The turtle moves

"The world has lost one of its **brightest, sharpest minds**," said Transworld Publishers' Larry Finlay.
seems to contradict the article title
Fantasy author Terry Pratchett has died aged 66 after a long battle with **Alzheimer**'s disease.
-
If the way Terry has spoken about his disease is anything to go by, he didn't let it progress to the point where he was anything other than what is described in the article.
-
You're ruining my dickweedery!
Besides, I have no idea who he was.
-
-
Hmm, never heard of Discworld but I've definitely heard references about a disc on the back of elephants and turtles.
-
A certain realization dawned on him.
"Oh," he said.
YES, said Death.
"Not even time to finish my cake?"
NO. THERE IS NO MORE TIME, EVEN FOR CAKE. FOR YOU, THE CAKE IS OVER. YOU HAVE REACHED THE END OF CAKE.”
RIP PTerry

i was looking for that quote.
=(
-
I only know about Pratchett from the Discworld adventure games, which I LOVED. Never read any of his books. I'm not really into humor novels.
-
I first thought this was a thread about LOGO.
-
i think this is rather apropos at this point in time....
-
You're mean.

In the Ramtops village where they dance the real Morris dance, for example, they believe that no-one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away - until the clock he wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished its ferment, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone's life, they say, is only the core of their actual existence.

I now realize something that I didn't realize yesterday, rendering the original version of this post nonsensical. However, Discourse apparently won't let me delete a post from mobile (absolutely nothing happens when I tap the trash can), so fuck it.

SHUN THE UNBELIEVER!!!

I've never quite gotten around to reading them, either, but this seems like a good excuse to do so. I just put a hold on The Color [sic] of Magic at my local library.

You've at least heard of the books.
-
There's a film adaptation they did a few years ago that was pretty good. Feels very LoTR-y, probably because Sean Astin is in it.
-
The first two were deliberate parody of LotR, set after the battles were done and everyone had settled down.
I miss him already.
Thankfully there is still one new book to come, finished last year, just waiting to clear QA.

aged 66
Huh, I thought he was older.
It's a shame, really. Now I guess we can only hope his daughter doesn't decide to quote-unquote "continue the legacy"...
-
already been confirmed that she will.
"The Watch" is a TV continuation from Raising Steam which has been in the works for several years, and Terry has said he expects that she will take over. She is allegedly an accomplished writer in her own right and he has said the discworld will be safe in her hands, I am yet to be convinced.
-

Doing such amazing plots as Mirror's Edge (Orwellian conspiracies always sell, right?), Tomb Raider (2013) (let's have the most one-dimensional cast of supporting characters we can get) and Overlord (which was utterly silly).
She's mediocre at best, and she stated once or twice she won't be writing Discworld books, but I'm yet to be convinced of that too.
-
-
Do you have a pattern for this?
-
Sadly no. I found it on /r/aww
-
I just put a hold on The Color [sic] of Magic at my local library.
Finally got to the library (when they were open; failed on that Thursday evening, and didn't have a chance yesterday) this morning. Spent most of the afternoon reading it. Despite having been told it's not one of his best, I quite enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to reading more, starting with Equal Rites; I'm not sure off-hand where that fits in the series, but they happened to have it on the shelf.

I found this the other day.
-
Thanks, that will be useful. So, Equal Rites is a separate story line from The Colour of Magic — probably not the ideal next one to read, but at least it's the start of its line.

Fixed.

to me, reading them in the publication order is the best way.
a lot of them have crossed references that are easy to miss.
YMMV

The witches are excellent. And I enjoyed all of them, just some more than others.
-

As @tar said, it's the start of its line. And story lines didn't get written / published all strictly in order. Ideally, I recommend following the order in which they were published. You'll have characters from other lines float through now and then.
-
As everyone has been saying, the world gets built up around you as the books were published, although it may not feature your favourite characters directly or entirely, the other books all inter-reference throughout so you lose a lot by skipping them. The clearest example is the developments in books like The Truth, Going Postal, Making Money which significantly impact the Watch and Vimes characters, without being directly about them.
-
Going Postal
And Monstrous Regiment is clearly after both that and The Last Hero, despite being principally stand-alone. It's a complicated web; the simplest way is to just use the publication order.
-
the simplest way is to just use the publication order.
That would be my natural inclination, and why I started with The Colour of Magic. However, whether I am able to follow that (or any other particular) order is highly dependent on what they happen to have at my library.
-
There are several "strands", that don't really directly reference each other for a while.
The first two books (Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic) are before he really found his "voice", as it were - they are nearly pure satire, built of set pieces but not much plot. Then he got better. Much better - one could even accuse him of literature!

How To Read Terry Pratchett's Discworld Series, In One Handy Chart
I found this the other day.
Guys, guys, you know there's that chart...
-
Reading is a barrier to post count
(Also, v2.2 is better, though it's missing The Shepherds' Crown, the final Tiffany/Young Adults. Published mid 2015.)

@PJH or @apapadimoulis whichever of you are able - can we do this on the main page/discourse?
-
I can't touch the headers. Not on here at least; I do have other servers I can mess with however..

.. in fact I'm not sure it's going to be that easy to change the nginx config to include it - looking at my own instance I'm not sure where I'd even start...

I'm confused... what are we talking about here? HTTP headers?
Doesn't nginx have an equivalent of Apache's
.htaccess
files?
-

Did you look at the nginx link?
https://www.reddit.com/r/discworld/comments/2yt9j6/gnu_terry_pratchett/cpdjen5
And if you run nginx, it's just
add_header X-Clacks-Overhead "GNU Terry Pratchett";
in the server or location block of your nginx.conf.
-
I'm confused... what are we talking about here? HTTP headers?
I was confused at first, but yes - the first comment.
Doesn't nginx have an equivalent of Apache's .htaccess files?
Dunno, but even if it did, it suffers from the same problem - the container that the DC install runs in can be wiped/refreshed at any time losing them.
-
Did you look at the nginx link?
Not the point - it's what needs to be modified with that in order for it to survive any updates/rebuilds to the container.
-
Ah, right.
-
should we try and summon discodevs for support?
I have dribbly candles ready
-
Possibly. If I can't figure it out from a quick google, I'm fairly certain that Alex, with his Extensive Knowledge™ of Linux, won't have a chance.
-
not that there's much there, but it's on my server now.
@PJH i'll do some digging and see if i can figure out a way to do this for what.thedailywtf.com
@riking might be around and know faster than i can find out of course.
