COLUMBUS, Ohio - A 22-year-old intern was given the responsibility of safeguarding the personal information of thousands of state employees, a security procedure that ended up backfiring.

Under protocol in place since 2002, a first backup storage device is kept at a temporary work site for a state office along with the computer system that holds all the employee information, and a second backup device is given to employees on a rotating basis to take home for safekeeping, officials said.

  • Dont worry about it... there are other Security measures in place...

    Look at this quote:

"I think it's not that big of a deal," she said. "The person who stole it would really have to know what he's doing."

So they are implementing a strict security by obsurity policy... Most likely they even didnt LABLE the tape... So how would anyone be able to retrieve the information from it. Also the average Value of o SSN + valid personal data is, according to the police, only 0.023  cents (15$ / 65000 SSN Numbers)

I've done a lot of research on this, and I've never seen SSNs go for quite that cheap. Closer to $1/number.

Perhaps buying in bulk is cheaper, though, I've never seen that many numbers sold at once.

  • I was only quoting the article, where the tape was listed as a 15$ Value, while the radar-detector was listed as 200$...

I really demand a sarcasm Tag for these forums ;)

It's not the open market value, it's how much the police can get by selling them out of the evidence room.

  • I was reading this thread again, and it reminded me: I wrote a blog about this kind of thing about a week ago.

If you've been reading the Sidebar for awhile, you might even recognize the story I wrote about, I posted the story here a couple months back.
