Poll: is Discourse deterministic?
-
- Discourse is deterministic, so every action is effectively predetermined.
- Discourse is nondeterministic, so no action can be predicted.
-
I think the spectrum looks like this:
Deterministic ---- Non-deterministic ---- Chaos ---- Discourse
-
You can't even predict server cooties any more.

I voted without triggering a bug. Try to predict that!

Discourse is deterministically non-deterministic. I can always be sure I have no idea what it might do at any given moment.

I take it back...

I voted without triggering an immediately user-visible bug.

Chaos is entirely deterministic, just highly sensitive to initial conditions
-
Chaos is entirely deterministic
But, arguably, not usefully so. It's very difficult or impossible to know the initial conditions with sufficient precision to make accurate predictions (even assuming one has an accurate model of the system, which is also unlikely).
-
You can often make predictions about the general pattern of things to come, or something like the ranges of initial conditions that will lead to a particular type of chaotic behaviour. The three body problem in gravitation is chaotic, but we can still plan a route for a spacecraft through the solar system

The results of this poll were entirely deterministic.

well, yes, but mostly because the vast majority of the time we can ignore the problem and use the two body equations to get close enough. we just waste a bit of delta-V making corrections that might not have had to be made if we had a proper N-body system solution..
