How many of you play EvE Online?

  • If there's ever a WTF game where the game company trolls the players, it's EvE.

    Anyone beside me?

  • I don't like to play boring spreadsheet simulators, so I play Dwarf Fortress instead.

  • Consider this a second like. That was funny.

  • Only sociopaths play EVE Online.

  • i tried it. but my idea of a spaceships game is to actually pilot the gorram thing!
    so i blow kerbals up.

  • So what's your screen name?

There's another MMO along those lines that had such promise, but it had three fatal flaws:

    • Zones are connected end-to-end like a railway all the way to the opposing faction's home, and once you're around level 35, you can only grind in one or two PvP zones and get to enjoy level 80's from the opposing faction ganking you all day.
    • Being a Korean MMO, leveling is 50% quests and 50% grind, and leveling after the 70's is tedious. Rumor has it that 98->99 is one year of 8 hours/day grinding.
    • Energy kits, the equivalent of mana potions, are extremely rare and expensive. Additionally, regen does not scale with max energy, so after a couple minutes of intense fighting, you basically have to sit and rest for 5-10 minutes. Curiously, the community doesn't see this mechanic as broken and stupid.

This is a much better use of your time.

  • Another EVE player speaking -- although machine lag has been crimping my style as of late.

  • I tried it years ago (back when there was a monthly subscription fee) and couldn't get into it. I've heard it's maybe improved since then?

If I ever get tired of single-player Elite (and assuming the multiplayer stays as train-wrecky as that other topic makes it sound), maybe I'll try Eve again.

  • Haven't played in over a year, but ran Incursions, and got an Archon towards the end of my run.

I have no idea if any of my stuff can actually be accessed anywhere 😦

You can guess which alliance I belong to.

  • I've wanted to try it but keep hearing horror stories about the learning process, and I'm afraid of finding myself sucked into an MMO again.

So instead I spend hours welding armor blocks in Space Engineers.

  • BINNED

Used to, stopped... man, dunno, 2-3 years ago? Only have time for one life, unfortunately, and even this one is getting kinda taxing on my free time.

  • I don't remember. I tried EVE when it was new and also the most tedious and boring game ever released anywhere, ever. Then I got bored of it, like all sane people, and forgot about it.

Then years later, you start seeing all these "EVE is so great!" articles and you're just like: whaaaaaa???

I can only assume its either been completely rewritten, or the people playing it just love tedium.

It's far better than it used to be -- most of the truly nasty rough edges in the NPE have been knocked off over the past few years, although the biggest remaining hump is something the game devs can't do anything about without totally changing the flavor of the game i.e. the assumption some newbs to EVE make that "everyone who tries to blow you up is an insufferable sociopathic donkey", because that's how they are conditioned to think.

Still a subscription fee (unless you can make inordinate amounts of ingame income) -- but it's definitely improved since then.

  • I thought it went F2P at some point? Or maybe you had to pay for the client as well and it had a trial or something, but now the client is free? It was a really long time ago, pretty close to when it first came out.

Edit: The wiki article isn't much help, maybe I misremembered the whole thing and I was actually in the helicopter that was shot down while playing Eve.

Client itself's merely a download -- there is a free trial (14 days, unless you get an invite from a friend, which gives you a longer trial) though. PM me and I can hook you up with a trial invite, with a couple of caveats.

It's utterly impossible that they all independently came to the same conclusion, perhaps as a result of everyone on EVE being an insufferable sociopathic donkey.

No -- they're importing that assumption from their prior experience (in other MMOs, as I see it).
