Coase theorem and antitrust

  • So, I wrote and published a book. It's for a niche audience, and the competitor's books are about $120-200 new. I'm selling mine for 22, and predictably, I'm now Amazon's top selling book in the niche.

    I'm not earning a very big royalty, but the nice thing is, I know I'm seriously hurting the competition. They're making about an 8th as many sales as they were last week. It is costing them a lot, and in fact it's costing them more than I'm making. The perfect situation to apply Coase theorem.

    What are my options to cash in, without breaking "antitrust" laws? Sell them the rights? Have them "hire" me with a non-compete?

  • Link the book. I'll buy it just to hurt the competition.

    Would be a bonus if the book is good or worthwhile, but that's not necessary.

    Or, since you're outselling them, just keep doing that ;)

    😃 My book only hurts them when it steals away somebody who would have bought theirs.

    Well, yeah, but there's more money to be made. I can't raise prices (Amazon sets the price).

  • You don't know me, bra.

    Maybe I did just buy theirs. Maybe I didn't because it was too expensive.

    Link or GTFO. 😄

    Seriously, I'm curious. Books that sell for 120-200 USD are usually pretty interesting.

    Edit: turns out the book was relevant to something I wanted. Totally bought it.

  • To clarify, umm, I have a raging hardon for textbooks. I like them. A lot. Even the bad ones.

    I get most of them from libraries that are cleaning out inventory, so I go in and buy bags and bags of books for a couple of dollars per bag. Then I read them, because why else would you do that?

    You never know what you're going to find. Check out Psychology textbooks from the 1940s and 50s. Holy shit there's some crazy ass stuff in there. Electroshock. Because it just kills the bad parts of your brain cells. But hey, you know. Science and stuff.

    Music Theory textbooks from the 1920s. Holy shit, those things are completely crazy. I have 75 graduate level credits in music theory. No degree, just a lot of credits. There's shit in those textbooks that I don't think a single music theory PhD could figure out.

    I love this kind of stuff. When someone talks about a book that costs that price range I know it's either rare or a textbook, and I fucking want it.

    And I thought I am an odd girl… 😆

    Haha. Yeah. I know. Learning stuff is so . . . okay fuck it. It's weird. No point in trying to justify it.

    But hey, I thought you were accalia's queen. No idea you were an actual girl to boot.

    we're symmetrical that way.

    also learning things is the best thing!

    the day i don't learn at least one new thing is the day i die. :-P

  • Well, I also buttumed that you were a male queen as well.

    You know how the intarwebz works: all the men are men, all the women are men, all the children are FBI agents.

    No big deal here, just a couple of queens being each others queens . . . .

  • Should I post the treatise on why "there are no girls on the internet" is a thing?

  • Only if you are a girl.

  • [DFHack]# :rb_eval puts df.world.history.figures.inject(Hash.new(0)) { |h, f| h[f.sex] += 1; h }.inspect
    {0=>39024, -1=>1206, 1=>38729}

    That's 38729 male, 39024 female, and 1206 genderless beings.

    For the genderless beings, I get these categories:

    {"worm"=>1, "desert titan"=>2, "brush titan"=>6, "sand titan"=>1, "savanna titan"=>4, "tundra titan"=>7, "plains titan"=>1, "swamp titan"=>5, "jungle titan"=>3, "marsh titan"=>8, "leech"=>1, "jackal brute"=>1, "Child-like Behemoth"=>19, "hill titan"=>8, "wagon"=>144, "tortoise fiend"=>1, "forest titan"=>12, "mountain titan"=>9, "bronze colossus"=>37, "antman"=>69, "forgotten beast"=>867}

  • That's a lot of Titans. You'd think that many Titans would eventually clash somehow.

  • Don't forget about the 867 forgotten beasts! Forgotten beasts are just titans that live underground!
