Nintendo New 3DS doesn't come with a charger...
-
Nintendo launched the New 3DS today. It even says right on the box that it doesn't come with a charging cable, so that's not a surprise.
What is a surprise is that Nintendo didn't make/ship any more chargers to stores than they normally do. Meaning that they're essentially sold out.
Now, this is the same (proprietary) charger that the DSi, 3DS, and 3DS XL use. Nintendo must have assumed a lot of buyers would simply reuse their old 3DS charger for this.
There's two problems with this thinking:
- It totally screws over new customers. People who skipped over the $250 3DS and $200 3DS XL would probably be more likely to buy a New 3DS for $200 now that it fixes the issue with the 3D looking all out of focus.
- Stores like GameStop knock $10 or more off their buyback value if you don't give them the charger as well. Which, since GameStop is offering back more money than usual for a a 3DS/3DS XL if you purchase a New 3DS at the same time...
-
It also partially screws over old customers, since you will likely want to transfer your system to the new one, which takes a little while, and you may want to have both systems plugged in while it's happening. And then you have to trade-in/sell/give away your old system without a charger.
-
My husband and I have been going back and forth on this issue. He feels it's cruel not to put a charger in the box, but I point out that as a Nintendo-loving household, we have four of the damn things floating around, why include more? Nintendo is probably assuming most of the customer base for the New 3DS are more like us than totally new customers, given their handheld market saturation. So most people buying a New 3DS at launch won't need one.... in theory.
-
which takes a little while
Every time I've seen the "Please plug in while you do this time-intensive operation" message on a Nintendo system, it's done laughably long before battery becomes an issue.
-
What they should have done is stop being special snowflakes and just charge the thing with micro USB like a normal electronic device. Especially if they don't include a charger.
-
-
Would the preference be for them to charge more for the New 3DS to include the charger, when a large portion of customers have one anyway?
This way - if you need one, you pay extra, and if you don't then you don't.
Hell, I'd buy a new mobile phone without a micro USB charger if it got me it a little bit cheaper.
TRWTF is them not just using micro USB or whatever.
edit: Hanzo on the last bit.

That's not an issue though, since micro-USB chargers are cheap and easy to getBut when you use a proprietary connector, include a fucking charger
-
since micro-USB chargers are cheap and easy to get
A 3DS charger costs £7.
That doesn't change my point.

Wow. Nintendo's actually codified their business policy of, "don't even bother to get new customers, we just run on nostalgic idiots now".

Nintendo could sell a dog turd in a box and you'd by 37 of them. See what I mean? Their business policy somehow works.

Did you read the OP? The WTF here is you can't pay extra because the stores are out of stock on the chargers.

I did miss that, yes.
-
Everywhere outside America, the 3DSLL didn't come with a charger either, it's not as new as it thinks.
I went to a games shop today and it had racks of chargers, except maybe everyone else is already used to it outside America.Nintendo's actually codified their business policy of, "don't even bother to get new customers, we just run on nostalgic idiots now".
Yes, it is correct. http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/141030/img/11l.jpgEvery time I've seen the "Please plug in while you do this time-intensive operation" message on a Nintendo system, it's done laughably long before battery becomes an issue.
An estimate of Nintendo's reckoning is that the transfer will take 1 hour per 2GB upon the wireless communication channel (as opposition to travelling via PC). You can potentially store 128GB on a memory card, and it does not have an 64 hours of battery.

A micro USB would be ideal. But a "brand standard" is the next best thing. At least they're not changing the charger with every minor revision of their consoles.
Nintendo always does this thing where they have to reinvent everything. They refuse to integrate existing technologies until it's clear that they have no other choice.
-
Why wouldn't they? It doesn't cost them sales as long as people like Yamikuronueyryew exist.

As previously mentioned, this is the same charger Nintendo has been using since they introduced the DSi back in 2008.
I still think they should have used

Which made things really irritating with the original DS as the networking stack was apparently included with games rather than the system. So, when you played DS games on a newer DS system (DSi or 3DS), it still only supported WEP encryption despite the DSi introducing support for WPA/WPA2.
Lets not get started with the huge wtf that is the Nintendo 3DS eShop and its "bind games to the system not the account" lunacy.

The WiiU Gamepad's charger looks almost peapod identical to the DSi/DSiLL/3DS/3DSLL/N3DS/N3DSLL charger, except the plug is ever slightly wider and thus, entirely incompatible.

I've heard that it is compatible. If I remember, I'll check when I get home.
-
It's compatible. It's the same damn cord. That's why we have
fourfive of them.
-

Because buying a charger on Amazon is srsbzns.
-
I think that buying Gameboys is more an "instant gratification" thing than not. Nintendo's going to lose sales due to this moronic-ness.
Not that it matters, because rabid Nintendo fans buy literally every shitty product they produce.
-
Because buying a charger on Amazon is srsbzns.
Some kid's grandma buying a birthday present probably isn't going to order anything on Amazon. Assuming she even knows that the device doesn't come with the charger. Assuming she doesn't accidentally buy the old 3DS because "New x" is a confusing name for people not intimately familiar with the fact that it's a different thing than the old one.
-
Amazon themselves is out of stock (at least in the US).
If you try accessing the store page normally, you'll instead get a third-party listing for it. I had to try to add it to my cart from the "other sellers" list to even get the link I used above.
-
Huh. Turns out they are different (or I've got a mutant 3DS/Gamepad)
-
huh, I stand corrected
-
Is 5 dollars such a problem? And besides, those things are really common. Someone has lost a (3)DS(i) but has not lost the charger.
-
Is 5 dollars such a problem?
If neither you nor the shop have one, I think it might be...

Ah, another reason I'm not an Apple fan.
-
literally every shitty product they produce.
I think it's more customers buy literally every shitty mobile device, that their current product fandom ties them to, produced.
My last venture into mobile gaming devices was ye old game gear. That thing was a beast. Even had the magnifying attachment so I didn't have to develop bone spurs in my spine to use it. Now I watch kids hunched over a 3DS and think, spinal degeneration here we come.
All it does really is lock me out of third rate spinoff games. And do I seriously need a game that I can synch from my console to my mobile device? As if I didn't waste enough time on this soul-sucking addiction.
Nope, I use my tablet for audiobooks.
-
For me, the only reason to have 3DS is Ace Attorney series. Would be enough reason to buy one (second-hand probably) if I lived in one of those rich western countries. But I don't.
-
And that's what causes piracy.
I can't afford the 3ds, but my machine can run it. You'd get some practically free money if you let me just license the game only.
NOOOOOOO.... You must pay the $400 gate fee.
Well, then, fuck it. Piracy it is.
-
I agree with the general sentiment, except there's no working 3DS emulator yet.
-
NOOOOOOO.... You must pay the $400 gate fee.
Are 3DSes really $400 in [insert country here]?
The New 3DS just launched in the US for $200.

Hell, I'd buy a new mobile phone without a micro USB charger if it got me it a little bit cheaper.
Mine didn't come with a charger, exactly because the assumption was most people have a micro USB charger or cable already.
You can buy a charger from their website if you want to for €9.99 if you like though.
-
Mine came with a cable but no charger, which is fine by me. The cables are the bits that I get through, there are plenty of wall adapters kicking around my houfuse

I don't know how international it is (it probably is), but in Belgium a lot of those AC-to-USB chargers look like
You can plug any old USB cable into it (and those are probably cheaper to replace than the whole charger).
there are plenty of wall adapters kicking around my houfuse
That's not even a word
-
-
That's pretty standard these days I think.
-
my work here is done
here.FTFY
:grumble: how hard is it to put words in the right order
-
Well, no spellar, gramming was expected :P
-
-
Acceptable, maybe.
Sensical, no! Here is modifying "my work", and thus should be adjacent to it!!!!11eleven
-
-
As I understand it, "my work is done here" means that here is only a part of the whole area where his work is needed, and in this particular part there's nothing more to do, and he can move elsewhere. "My work here is done" would suggest that the entire work is done, since it was only needed here.
But I might be wrong.
-
No, you're pretty much on it ;)
-
Homer no function beer well without.
-
I guess we're having a left-pondian/right-pondian thing here, because to me your whole statement is a TDEMSYR.
Yay language!
-
left-pondian/right-pondian
Is it something similar to left-wing/right-wing? I think we should make another topic if we want to drill into this issue.
-
In my head, it was a joke/pun based on little-endian vs big-endian, exploiting that 'merka and GB (the two primary "sources" of English these days, as far as I can tell) are on the left and right sides of "the pond".
Apparently, I'm the real whoosh here.
-
the two primary "sources" of English these days
One primary (British, the proper English), one secondary (Merkin, the other English)
