The $10k ethernet cable
-
Good news everyone! There's a new balls-to-the-wall, kick ass ethernet cable available for only $10K.
"Why would I pay $10K for an ethernet cable?" I hear you ask... Well it's to combat the horrible problem of digital audio degradation due to usage of crappy ethernet cables. Don't you just hate it when your digitals degrade? I know I do.
It's not until you read their advertising spiel that the full extent of the WTFery becomes apparant...

All insulation slows down the signal on the conductor inside. When insulation is unbiased, it slows down parts of the signal differently, a big problem for very time-sensitive multi-octave audio.
Yep, that's right. According to audioquest; normal ethernet cables transmit the signal at different rates, so you will end up hearing some of the notes in the wrong order. Also, TIL using multiple octaves makes music more time sensitive. Thank you audioquest!
@audioquest said:
All audio cables are directional. The correct direction is determined by listening to every batch of metal conductors used in every AudioQuest audio cable. Arrows are clearly marked on the connectors to ensure superior sound quality. For best results have the arrow pointing in the direction of the flow of music. For example, NAS to Router, Router to Network Player.
I don't know about you guys but I'm getting confused by all the science and big words. That must mean that it's a very good cable. I'm going to insta-buy one right now.

I'm pretty sure I read about this sort of thing on Slashdot a couple of years ago…
-
Well, I read about this on Slashdot this morning
They do make a ridiculous HDMI cable too, but I think the Ethernet cable is new. My google-fu is only turning up articles from the past day or so about the ethernet cable.

Mine was turning up articles on Monster cables, which I seem to remember are the same sort of thing, but for audio cables. And I was uncovering stuff from 2011.
-
Yeah, some of the articles compare them to monster cables, but a more expensive version of them. There must be some real idiots out there if products like this keep being made.
-

The likes of Denon have cropped up on here as well.

Maybe we should use the money from Jeff to buy Blakey a share in one of these cables.

Even better: a timeshare in one of those cables!
-
You know which direction the evil ideas thread is
-
This cable costs more than all three of my cars combined!
-
But it's a really good cable and it will stop your digitals from degrading. I hear that's very impotent.
-
I hear that's very impotent.
Good to know. I wouldn't want to wake up someday and see hundreds of little cables crawling all over my kitchen.
-
Signposts on the cable for the electrons…
-
This cable costs more than all three of my cars combined!
When I pick up my new car tomorrow, I'll have bought four cars, and still the total amount I spent buying them will be less than the cost of that cable!
-
Either the cars you buy are pieces of crap, or cars here are REALLY expensive...
-
Or by "new", he actually means "used".
-
It'll be new to him
-
Still, 4 cars for under $10,000 is stretching it a bit. An average second hand car here would cost you about $15,000
-
It depends on the condition of the car, but you already alluded to that.
-
An average second hand car here would cost you about $15,000
WTF? That's a lot of money. Where do you live? I suppose you did say "average". There are a lot of expensive cars knocking about I guess. I would never consider spending more than $10k on a car.
-
You can buy a banger that you'll run into the ground in a year or two for about £500. If you know what you're doing and don't mind it being a bit old, you can get something pretty reliable in the £1500 to £2000 range. My car was bought at 2 years old for £6500
-

My cars are 2001 Focus, 2003 Focus and 1998 Seicento. I'm pretty sure the next three still wouldn't break the $10000 barrier.

About $5,5001998 Seicento
None for sale, but already over the $10,000 limit after 2 cars...

Because only idiots buy cars
It wouldn't be necessary if we actually had SOME sort of public transport system...everybody else steals them
Funny, 'cause it's true. My last car got stolen...
-
I've known a few South Africans, none of them have much good to say about the place

Erm… I may have mentally switched a $ for a £…
Still, my first three cars all told still cost less than that cable.

Any car I've seen for sale under $2k is a POS that will need at least $3k in repairs in the first year.

It's still on sale in Poland, for about 2800zł ~~ $760.

At a franchise main dealer, maybe. Use an independent garage (or, even better, DIY), and you can probably wipe that $3k in half easily.Disclaimer: Offer not guaranteed to be applicable outside the United Kingdom of Great Englandland and What Little We Still Own Overseas

Turbocharger controller malfunctions a bit, so it has very little horsepower below 2000RPM.

FTFY. Because, who would want to sell a good car?

FTFY. Because, who would want to sell a good car?
Here in the First World, you have rental car turnover, leases, and people who just buy new cars every few years. Presumably other cases, but there you go.
It's probably from all the money we saved by avoiding passenger trains (and $10K cables).
-
who would want to sell a good car?
Idiots who must always have the latest plate on their drive? Also, it's not unusual for some people to get a new or nearly new car, run it for 2-3 years, then part-exchange it when it's due for its first MOT (required annually for all cars 3yo or older in the UK). Three years is also when a number of manufacturer warranties run out too.
-
The only problem is the crime, otherwise it is actually quite good
-

Touché. Though, I wonder if it was intentional or accidental. Also, it's not unusual for some people to get a new or nearly new car, run it for 2-3 years, then part-exchange it when it's due for its first MOT (required annually for all cars 3yo or older in the UK). Another reason to go west. Along with 4x higher salaries and useful police force.

The guys selling those Ethernet cables know perfectly well that it's exactly as good as any other. But there's no legal repercussions for doing this, and they probably just need to sell one to make a profit.
-
There ought to be some law about knowingly providing wrong scientifical facts somewhere, right?
-
If you look at it carefully, there's probably nothing that's outright lying, just a load of unprovable stuff or things that sound like they say something but don't really. e.g.
For best results have the arrow pointing in the direction of the flow of music
Doesn't say you'll get worse results pointing the other way, if it's equal both ways then that will be best results technically
-
But this:
When insulation is unbiased, it slows down parts of the signal differently, a big problem for very time-sensitive multi-octave audio.
is blatant lie beyond any doubt. Four lies, actually.

Scamming idiots who thing magic rocks can make their stereos sound better has been going on for decades. There's a huge overlap between "audiophiles" and "people who don't know shit about anything whatsoever."

Except until now, it was limited to sound equipment. And this thing here is FUCKING ETHERNET!!!

Bullshit. For two reasons.

You can buy magic wooden blocks to magically make your room sound better. That's not sound equipment.

Ethernet cables are sound equipment in this far future magical world of 2015.

You need to get the audio from your NAS to your streaming box somehow. Wi fis are too unreliable, what if there's something causing interference on the way? With a cable, you know exactly where the music is going and you only need to insulate that path rather than encasing your whole music room in a faraday cage
